The bike shop is right across the street from the tourist information center on a pretty art deco along the coast line. The bike path takes you south along the coast on a very flat and mostly pretty ride with a few toilets and water stops along the way. There is a beautiful stretch of nature preserve and agricultural fields after the river that is stunning.

You might want to make a reservation for lunch at one of the 3 big wineries prior to leaving the bike shop. It will take 90 minutes plus to reach them. The ride back was into the wind which made the trip harder than it should have been.

Thank you for sharing your experience at the bike shop and along the coast. It's great to hear that you enjoyed the bike ride. Making a reservation for lunch at one of the wineries is a great idea on weekends and holidays. I'm sorry to hear that the ride back was harder due to the wind, but I hope it didn't detract too much from your overall experience. Thank you for taking the time to write this review and share your insights with others. We hope to see you again soon at the bike shop!

Fantastic service and good bike selection. We were 5 in total, and required 4 electric and 1 ‘proper’ bike 😉. I did this all over the phone, giving the heights of all the riders and asked if the bikes could be delivered to our lodge. No problems there and bikes were delivered bang on time. A little tuition and we were off. We dropped the bikes back to hire depot, after a fantastic two days , visiting a few vineyards and a couple of cycle tours. Maps and information all given to us before setting off. We were even dropped back to the lodge free of charge. Thanks Napier City Bike Hire👍. Ps- locks and chargers are all part of the kit, with useful panniers.

We turned up without a booking - no problem. Really friendly and reassuring staff, who offered great advice on where to go and how long things may take.

We hired 2 E-Bikes and a pedal bike - all worked perfectly.

We did a return trip to Mission Estate, had an awesome lunch and came back all within the 4 hour hiretime.

We rented bikes two days and took two separate routes. Each was beautiful and interesting and we tried five wineries and truly enjoyed. Have to say that, after a long and hot ride, the folks at Elephant Hill were a bit too snobby and would not make room for us for a tasting, even though the place was huge and only a few people were there. The folks in the shop were a bit less than friendly, however the overall experience was great.

My sister and I booked the Waterways to Wineries bike tour for our New Year’s Day treat - and what a treat it was! Firstly, we only booked a day ahead and they were still able to organise a lunch booking for us at busy Mission Estate. So grateful! The map was easy to read and the bike seats were already set to our heights. The ride was flat the whole way and so beautiful! I particularly enjoyed the wetlands area. My sister hadn’t been on a bike for a while so was a bit nervous and it was perfect for her. Napier has done a great job of the cycle ways-you feel very safe. We were running late for our lunch booking and called ahead but it wasn’t a problem at all. Mission Estate was beautiful. The food was delicious and service was top notch. We did our wine tasting at Church Rd after lunch and loved it. Came home with a few bottles after enjoying more top notch hospitality, a cheese platter and more wine! You can ride your bike back but we opted for the ride home as it was pretty hot, seeing as we were the only cyclists we were kindly dropped off at our motel. Thank you for an amazing experience. We’ll definitely be back again and highly recommend!

Thank you for your review and great you hear you enjoyed the Waterways to Wineries ride - it is one of our favourites too. And taking the shuttle back means that you can just relax and enjoy your lunch and the wonderful wine on offer at the two lovely wineries :-).

We picked up our bikes and map and we were off. What an amazing experience. It was great to bike at our own pace and the weather couldn't be better. The only thing I would add is that the map is not very clear when you get into town. We had to ask a few folks how to get to the wineries. As a result, we missed the first winery in town but were able to get to the last two without a problem. The wine was excellent, the views were spectacular. Took lots of pictures. Only recommendation I have is to provide better instructions on the map once you get into town and the bike trail ends. Ended the day with a perfect bottle of wine and appetizers at Elephant Hills.

We were in Napier for a conference so thought we would book a bike at the last minute - not a great idea leaving this til the last minute when a cruise ship is in port! But Napier Bikes were superb! We decided on the self guided tour - mainly because it was available and we booked online the night before (easy online booking system). We arrived in the shop 15mins early and despite being busy, we were warmly welcomed and soon had our helmets, bikes and route map all sorted out (thanks Kim!). The route down the coast is fantastic! Off road cycle track that is a combination of concrete and lime paths, so we felt pretty safe throughout the whole journey.
We stopped in Clive for a coffee at Zeppelin cafe (perfect point for our first break) then off we went along the coast till we got to wineries. The three wineries (Elephant Hill, Clearview and Te Awanga) are a hop skip and a jump from each other. As Napier Biles we’re picking us up at the end of the day at Elephant Hill, we left this winery as our last stop. We stopped at Clearview for tastings then cycled to Clifton for lunch, then Te Awanga then Elephant Hill.
This was nearly 40km of cycling so take the whole day to do this so as not to rush (we started at 9:30am and by 3pm we were ready to be picked up at the winery so didn’t have to rush)
Great day, great value, great service!!

We booked this trip online with Napier Bike Hires 2 days before our cruise stopped in Napier. Accessing the shop was easy since the Cruise Port offered a shuttle that stops right across the shop on Marine Parade rd.
As we checked in (they already had our bikes ready), they gave us bike helmets & bags, maps & instructions to get to the wineries. Very friendly & useful customer service! You can fill your water bottles there as well.
Most of the ride is on a coastal bike pathway so no need to deal with cars except on very few streets.
* PAY ATTENTION TO THE DEDICATED BIKE & PEDESTRIAN UNDERPASSES TO AVOID CROSSING THE HIGHWAYS! Follow the signs that point to CLIVE, then TE AWANGA, but you will find the wineries just before TE AWANGA town. Bring water & sunblock.
It is a 15 miles bike ride each way to Elephant Hill winery, the first of the three wineries nearby.
At Elephant Hill winery you will find an indoor restaurant and an outdoors wine testing bar. There is plenty indoor & outdoor seating to enjoy the views. Nice and friendly service, some small plates & snacks available as well.
Be aware that the ride back is harder since you have to push against the headwinds. If you are not an experienced cyclist you might want to upgrade to an E-bike. The coastal views are beautiful near the canals. Just follow the bike path.
Check-out was quick & easy. We had a very nice ride. I rated 4 stars because being an experienced cyclist in Northern California this ride was too easy!

A real shame. As a very experienced cyclist I hired a bike to for the winery tour. In short, a ramshackle of a bike.

Gears were un-responsive - would change 20 seconds after selecting.
Gears slipping and missing - once in a gear they would slip and miss. Almost came off when it slipped going up hill.
Seat rotating in down tube - not good when you are turning to check for traffic.

But the best was 10 minutes into the cycle, being called to ask if I’d put the seat up! Apparently the owner of the bike shop had seen me and thought I’d extended the seat which I hadn’t (I understand seat extension limits)!!!

On return, and reporting of the faults I felt the staff response was a little dismissive. Suggested (to my wife) I wasn’t peddling hard enough and that was why the chain was slipping! I’ve only been cycling for 45 ish years) and maintaining my own bike for 15 years... a shame when you try to blame the customer.

Also a shame as it’s been the only negative experience in New Zealand. A great place to visit.

I recommend you look elsewhere for a bike rental.

Hi Topjock0 Thank you for taking the time to post a review and we are sorry that you found your bike and our subsequent response unsatisfactory. Unfortunately we were completely unaware of any concerns with your bike until you and your wife returned from your ride, clearly very very unhappy. Had we been aware, then we would have remedied this for you with minimal disruption to your ride. All of our customers are advised that should they encounter any issue with their bike to simply call us and we will rectify the situation - usually with either advice over the phone or with a very quick bike swap. Our bikes are all new or near new but being mechanical things ridden by a large variety of people, from time to time a mechanical issue or a puncture can occur in spite of our best endeavours. Being a large and busy store, we always have resources on hand to deal with the unexpected, and we know all the quick access points around the trails which enables us to meet you with a replacement bike with minimal disruption to your ride should this be necessary. However, if we do not know there is an issue, we can’t address it. So once again our apologies that you did not have the experience that you and we expected, and we trust that you enjoy the rest of your travels in NZ.
