An Unexpected Journey
Feb 2020
The tale of how an idyllic sheep farm became the setting for Jackson's Hobbiton is an adventure in itself. The sets are exquisite in detail and design. The Green Dragon stout and meat pies were savory. First John our guide, then Peter with Hobbiton tour brought the Tolkien experience to life with anecdotes and stories.
John's timing on the Pohutu geyser was perfect as we viewed several 100 foot eruptions. Watching Maori students perfecting the weaving and carving skills of their ancestors was an added treat. Witnessing the nocturnal kiwi and silver fern finished our Rotorua sights.
But our journey was far from over as John drove us back to Mount Maunganui, he regaled us with facts about the history, industry and sociology of the intrepid Kiwis. We stopped and marveled at paddlers attacking class 5 Okere Falls. We also stopped at a kiwi fruit farm where we sampled kiwi berries, golden kiwi and jams. It was truly an unexpected journey from here and back again!

What a great review and title, obviously a serious LOTR and Hobbit fan. So pleased you had a great day on our combination Rotorua Geothermals and Hobbiton Tour TRG-16, its one of our most popular programs despite it being at least 8 hours long. Its a tour the ships do not offer direct so our smaller groups can get around to show you all the things you mention and still be back on board in good time, thanks again, Ian

Great tour
Feb 2020
John our tour guide was fabulous, very knowledgeable and kept the pace going so we didn’t miss anything plus we got a couple of extra sights. Hobbiton movie set was really good & Rotorua was great. We even saw the elusive Kiwi.

The Kiwi is a bonus as they are often sleeping, but the new [opened a few months ago] Kiwi Bird House at Te Puia is much better for viewing these endangered birds. You selected a great tour and had a great guide. Regards Ian

A Day with a Kiwi
Jan 2020
If your travels bring you to Tauranga, I would recommend Tauranga Shore Excursion for your tour needs. The company was truly professional and responsive. They provided a well maintained, clean passenger van to transport us. In addition to the Hobbiton movie set and Rotorua Geothermal geysers, you also experience a scenic tour of the New Zealand countryside as you travel from one location to the other. They were very prompt in meeting us at the port and returning my family and I back with ample time.
While we greatly enjoyed our excursions to Hobbiton and Rotorua, it was greatly enhanced by our guide, Les. Or, as Les puts it: “ I’m not a tour guide. I’m a Kiwi”. And, a true Kiwi he was. He was very hospitable and charming. He provided great insight into the daily life of New Zealanders. Due to our small party size and efficiency, Les was kind enough to show us additional sights, such as a kiwi farm, waterfalls and an award winning pie shop. He was very attentive and took very good care of my family and I. Perhaps, this stems from his over 30 years as a paramedic prior to his association with Tauranga Shore Excursions. Should you choose Tauranga Shore Excursion, my family and I would highly recommend spending the day with this Kiwi.

Thanks for the great review, Les is a real gem in our team of local driver/guides [we have around 30 here in Tauranga alone] and they all offer stunning service, so its good to know they are doing a good job for our clients. Regards Ian

Our guide was wonderful!
Delighted with this tour. You get both tours of the geothermal and the Hobbitton set for the price of one. Our guide was over the top with his knowledge. He also gave us several other short stops/drive by of other things in the area.

Hobbiton is gorgeous
Dec 2019
Half the trip was at Hobbiton and was really lovely. Such a beautiful place and an amazing farm. Te Puia was interesting, and the geyser in full form. Museums in the park were nice. Not much to see in terms of colourful pools etc, mostly bubbling mud and geysers. Really good excursion.

IanH4043
Thanks for the feedback. The geothermal sights you mention are not located at Te Puia, which really is just the bubbling mud and the famous Pohutu geyser, to see the multi colored pools you will need to visit either Wai-O-Tapu or Waimangu geothermals destinations [which we do cover on other tours] To see them all in one day is not really possible on such a short [7 hour] shore excursion. Maybe an excuse to come back again!

Full day of sightseeing and activities
Jan 2019
Be prepared for a full on day. Collected from our cruise ship at Tauranga we had plenty of time at both locations. Mudpools, geothermals and the chance to watch the Maori village welcome and look through handicrafts and souveniers. The off to Hobbiton and after lunch (not included in tour cost) we went on the Movie set which was pretty. Lots of walking (reasonable fitness required) with breaks at individual residences with informative commentary before a refreshing drink at the Green Dragon and the inevitable souvenier shop. Coach was comfortable and lots of pleasant scenery and a driver who was full of useful information.

Thanks Baross, great to hear you enjoyed the day, as you say its a full on day and one not usually offered by the cruise lines. We need to run smaller groups to cover this program in the usual 8 hours. But if you want to experience the geothermal sights of Rotorua AND the amazing movie set tour at Hobbiton then this is the only way. Will pass on the comments to the driver as well as they love to know if they are doing a good job. Kind regards

Great tour with excellent guide and value for money
Nov 2019
We did the Hobbiton Movie Set component of the tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our driver, Doug was very good with informative commentary (but lousy Dad Jokes). The bus ride was good and comfortable with a stop at a Manuka Honey shop to sample some Manuka ice cream and see a working bee hive. The Hobbiton movie set guide, Bethany, was also excellent with information about the history of the site and current activities. We booked on line direct with Shore Trips and Tours who met us at the gate of the Tauranga pier. It was much cheaper than booking on the ship.

Thanks for your kind comments, especially about the driver/guide Doug. Hobbiton is a great destination even if you are not keen on those type of movies as it has been transformed into "middle earth" from the beautiful natural New Zealand landscape. We offer these smaller group independent tours in all of the ports of call in NZ and Australia, so check out the web site if you are heading back this way. Regards Ian

Don't be last!
Oct 2019
This tour is good unless you happen to be the last ones on the mini-bus. We arrived earlier than the appointed time of 8.00am but we found the mini-bus full, except for two seats which were left for us. One was at the front, the other a single seat over the wheel. My husband and I alternated this through the day - there was nowhere to put your feet and it was extremely uncomfortable. I was feeling quite let down. This was the big spend for us - almost $AU500 for the day for two and I thought we should be at least able to sit together in comfort. With a little better organization, I thought that this seat should have been allocated to the child on the tour, for whom it might have been OK. If there had not been a child, then I think it should have been left vacant or a larger bus supplied. Twenty-three people in a mini-bus! On the upside, the driver was great and the two attractions were good. I would recommend that you shop around, compare and contrast, get guarantees about numbers and bus sizes.

Hi Estelle, thanks for your feedback and sorry to hear the day was not 100% satisfactory. Sounds like the actual tour and our guide Brian was fine as you gave us a 5 star review on our feedback form that day, so thank you for that. Regarding the seats on the vehicle which is what the problem was, this is a bit of an issue for most operators as the smaller minibuses and coaches that are used in NZ often have a 2 plus 1 seating layout, that being single seats down one side and then double seats down the other, so this does mean that couples do have to split up. As you said, you were the last to join the group and ended up being separated. We do not usually move clients around once they are seated and it is a bit of first come first served. I am sure that had you mentioned the problem to the driver then we could have re-arranged the seating a little better, with the child being moved to another seat. The coach used that day had 24 seats [plus the driver] and we had sold 23 of those seats, so in fact there was one spare seat that you could have used which may have been more suitable. We confirm the cost of the tour was $245 NZ per person which when compared to the same tour on the ship we think is a still very good value. We try use the smaller vehicles with 10 to 24 seats, so that you have a "small group" experience rather than the 50 seat coach tours, and the down side of this is the smaller seating. So again we can only apologize that the seating was not as comfortable as you would have liked. If you would like to contact us directly about the matter then you can find our details on the website at www.shoretripsandtours.com Regards Ian
