What to expect
  • This exclusive Big Island helicopter tour begins at your hotel door, when you’re picked up in a comfortable van and transported to the Kona airport. It’s here you’ll enjoy your Champagne toast and also receive a fresh flower lei before boarding the awaiting helicopter. Your tour begins as you soar above fields of jet-black lava outside Kona, which are punctuated by hidden, white beaches and impressively turquoise coves. Watch as the lava rock changes to pastures on the slopes of southern Kohala, which then give way to the verdant rainforest of the Hamakua Coast. Soar above valleys that once housed kings and are now only accessible by air, before flying past snowcapped Mauna Kea en route to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and famous Kilauea volcano. Since the sun will have faded behind the mountains by your arrival at Kilauea, you can make out the eerie, orange glow of Halema‘uma‘u Crater, which houses a bubbling lava lake a few feet below the surface. As you fly south towards the island’s southern tip, your pilot talks with you via 2-way headset about Big Island history and legends, before soaring over the black-sand beaches of Punalu’u Beach Park. You’ll also get views of Papakolea, the famous green beach, before circling back north above the city of refuge at Pu’uhonua o Honaunau. By the time you fly over Kealakekua Bay, where Captain Cook was infamously killed in a skirmish with native Hawaiians, the sun will be setting on the western horizon and igniting a fire in the sky; it's an experience and a moment that’s completely amplified from hundreds of feet in the air. Who knows? From your vantage point, there’s even the chance you could see the 'green flash' when the sun finally fades out of view. Finally, this spectacular Big Island helicopter tour lands back at the Kona airport, where you’re comfortably transferred back to your hotel.

Amazing First Helicopter Tour
Aug 2021
When my family of 3 landed in Kona, I commented that I could never see myself riding a helicopter for my fear of heights. I returned to pick up my family in a rental car and was informed that we were booked for a helicopter tour with Paradise the next day. The whole staff of the company was incredible, from check in and safety briefly through the 2+ hour tour. The team on the ground not only competently briefed us an gave knowledgeable answers to questions, but also showed us photos and gave great history of their experiences flying in helicopters. The tour itself was fantastic - a breath-taking, well-narrated and thrilling trip of Hawaii's diverse natural landscape. Our pilot, Matt, showed impressive knowledge, including names of various valleys and waterfalls, and also called out anticipated areas of wind and turbulence for the benefit of nervous, first-time passengers. The best way to see the Big Island, and I would definitely fly with Paradise again.

Ryan was our pilot and he was amazing. Great tour guide and great pilot. My family had the whole copter to ourselves. Ryan was super laid back and easy to talk to. Definitely takes pride in his job. This experience was unlike anything I have ever done. Not something any of my family will soon forget. I had me, my boyfriend, and my 3 boys (14,13,&8) they all LOVED it. My 14 year old got to be in front as the co-pilot. If you are considering doing this, then don't hesitate. You won't regret it! Thank you Ryan and Paradise Helicopters! You made our trip!

Amazing experience
Apr 2019 • Family
Easily the highlight of our Hawaiian vacation & my wife and son both agree. Ryan Moeller was our pilot and tour guide - he was so knowledgable, engaging and personally very interested in every aspect of the Big Island. We were awestruck by the beauty of the island and the dramatic waterfalls, the craters and lava flows with steam coming out, the black and green sand beaches and the amazing the wildlife he pointed out to us I.e Pigs, Goat. It's hard to describe how great a Heli tour this was - if we only did this tour traveling all the way to Hawaii - I would say the trip was well worth it to visit the Big Island. At times we felt like we were on a different planet with all the lava and craters and volcanic mountains in the center-ish of the island . Ryan was in constant dialogue with us pointing interesting things and sharing stories and answering our questions. Based on our comments and questions, he took us to areas he thought we would find interesting. Travis and the others at Paradise run a great tour and are very customer focused - A++++ !!

So many sights to see, Incredible Photo Ops, Exceeded expectations!
Apr 2019 • Family
Our friends visit Kona every year for the past 6 years. They recommended Paradise Helicopters so strongly, I didn't even consider other vendors. Took the family (5 of us) on the Sunset Tour. It was the first helicopter tour for the kids so I wanted them to have a great, safe, and fun experience. Paradise exceeded my expectations! Clear instructions and communications from the booking process, confirmation a day ahead and of course during the pre-flight briefings. The staff is attentive, generous, and professional.

One of the benefits of Paradise is the experience of the pilots. Paradise recruits military pilots - several of which have piloted Marine One -- the helicopter for US Presidents.

I chose the Sunset tour because I wanted to take a bunch of photos ... This is important for amateur photographers: Midday flights have a higher probability of very strong sunlight and shadow -- poor conditions that result in photos with very bright and dark areas with no gradual change. Greatly reduces the quality of the photos.

Paradise times the departures and arrivals PERFECTLY! The light was perfect the entire trip, viewing the sunset from the cockpit. Moreover, dusk fell and I was able to get a couple of shots of Kona in the lower light.

Our pilot, Keith Darby, exuded skill and experience from the very first minute of the briefing. But beyond the experience and professionalism, Keith made the trip super enjoyable through a mix of conversation, sightseeing-facts and he even had a customized music playlist to match the different parts of the trip! So cool!

Super delighted with Paradise and would fly with them AND KEITH again!

PS - A Few Photo Tips for Shooting from a Helicopter

1) Use a circular polarizer on your lens. Cabin windscreens cast a lot of reflections and the polarizing filter can remove them from your images.

2) Don't bring too much gear. You'll spend more time fiddling than shooting photos.

3) Personal preference is to have two camera bodies, one with a fast wide prime and another with a fast medium telephoto. If you have to choose one, go with the wider lens

4) There is vibration, so you need to keep your shutter speed relatively high, I'd say at least 1/500 or 1/1000.

Don't forget to STOP shooting, enjoy the view, and make memories.

Thrilling ride around the entire Island
This was the best helicopter ride I've ever been on. It was my birthday and I received special treatment from the moment we walked in. Everyone was so friendly from the ground crew to the pilot. Our pilot Koji was clearly experienced
and we felt safe even as we flew into valleys and over mountains. Saw things we could never see by ground. Waterfalls that rose over 2000 feet, smoking volcanoes. As we flew into the Waipio valley I felt like we were in Jurassic Park. Would recommend this trip to anyone with a sense of adventure.

Aloha catz76, I'm glad to hear that our Paradise Ohana (family) treated you well during your time here on the island. As a employee here at Paradise, our job is to assure your safety and your job is simply to enjoy the wonderful views that the Big Island has to offer. Majority of the views that you saw during your experience can only be witnessed by air. Taking a helicopter tour around the island is by far, the best way to see the island. I appreciate your kind feedback. Thank you for letting Paradise Helicopters be a part of your special day! Mahalo, Jazel

Amazing experience and worth every penny!

We think everyone starts out wanting to see the volcanoes which are spectacular but the waterfalls were even more beautiful than imagined. Great tour of the island as a whole. There are no words for how beautiful the Big Island is from the sky. Wonderful job by the pilot and nothing but professional top notch service from the staff. We Wanted window seats which they were great communicating when we could book to get them. They refunded our daughter’s reservation when she couldn’t make it given enough notice. Highly recommend this tour and Paradise Helicopters!

Aloha Adeventurer 812387, I highly agree with how beautiful and serene the valleys and waterfalls can be. The volcano and waterfalls are our main highlights of our tour. Majority of our guest mainly come for the volcano, but 80% of them come back saying that the valleys were their favorite part. It's incredible how diverse the Island is, especially up from bird's eye view. Our team tries their best to give our guests the greatest experience with Paradise, including our reservation team as well that takes care of your flight arrangements.Thank you for your generous feedback!
