Administrative items first: Some of their guided tours can be purchased at a discounted rate online. Once you’ve signed up, ensure you read the details in the email confirmation; it provides parking locations which may or may not be where check in occurs. We parked across from the Maria Lanakila Church on the corner of Dickenson St. and Wainee St.; it is paid parking and requires a 3-5 min walk to the check in location. The check in location, which is also a gift/souvenir shop, then directs you to another location near the boat where you’ll wait for further instructions.

They do have binoculars for rent and take a photo of your group when boarding. The photo is available once you debark the boat, for a price.

Now for the whale watching. WoW! What a GREAT experience. The boat seemed to be newer and very well taken care of. There was plenty of unassigned seating available and once the boat was outside of the harbor, guests were authorized to stand up and walk around. We lucked out; literally 15 minutes into the ride, just outside the harbor, we encountered a mother and baby humpback whale. What an incredible opportunity to see them! After some time, we continued along our way in search of more and we sure did find them! Many were seen far in the distance when they would exhale… you could see the mist from miles away. Not long after that, we came across another mother humpback whale, her baby, and 2 dolphins just enjoying each others company; the dolphins swam right up to the boat! At one point, one of the crew dropped a microphone/receiver in the water so we could hear the whales and it was a unique experience. The speaker system seemed to work very well so hearing the details, instructions, and marine biology facts was easy to hear; this isn’t always the case on boats.

If you enjoy wildlife, I highly recommend participating in this tour, and even more so, with the Pacific Whale Foundation, who seem to genuinely care for these creatures and the environment. The Captain and crew were professional, knowledgeable, and really positively amplified the trip! The organization even offers a guarantee that you’ll see a whale OR you can return, at no additional cost, within a year to try your luck again. Fret not, they boast a 97% sighting success rate during their season!!

The staff was great. Nothing felt rushed and they clearly were invested in giving us the ultimate experience. We weren’t lucky enough to have whales come within 100 ft (only the whales can make that happen), but we got as close as legally possible and the whales put on a show. Specifically, the calf was breaching and spy hopping constantly. It made for wonderful memories and some fun photos. We absolutely loved it. We did the whale watcher deluxe and were served lunch, which was pretty good, and one complimentary alcoholic beverage (more available for $). We heard the whale songs with the hydrophone and learned a ton about whale behavior. Overall, it greatly exceeded my expectations and I highly recommend the relatively smaller setting allotted by the whale watcher deluxe option.

Don’t forget, you get a free reschedule if your don’t see a whale, so it’s low risk and high reward!

I am from the Midwest, so naturally when I came to Hawaii, I ensured it was during whale watching season. I wasn't going to waste the trip by any means. Whale watching was one of the priorities of our trip. I booked the Ultimate Whale Watch with Experts from Lahaina Harbor. For $120 a person, I was a little surprised that the boat was so small; however, I would later come to realize the size of the boat probably helps move from site to site more swiftly as the whales do not remain stationary as you can imagine. We rented a pair of binoculars for $10 which was a smart thing to do. We were able to see the distant whale activity very well. In addition to guaranteed whale activity, we were also provided with a breakfast of: yogurt parfait, pastries and fruit with coffee and water. Three hours was plenty of time for the tour. We moved from many sites as well as moved alongside some whales unexpectedly. We did not see any whales breach (jump from the water) on our tour, but that's not necessarily something you can predict. Our guides were quite knowledgeable, answering questions and providing all sorts of education regarding whales, their habits and their migration patterns. There was also an underwater microphone that allowed us to hear the whales "sing."

If I had to make a recommendation to someone considering a tour or tours with PacWhale I would say if your between tours or cost is an issue, book the snorkeling tour during whale season. You will for sure see whales on any tour plus you get to snorkel. A win-win!

The only issue was the confusion at the Harbor. There wasn't a designated person working for PacWhale directing people. There are multiple tours with PacWhale that depart early in the morning, so there was quite a bit of confusion and chaos moving people around. The photographer ended up directing people which of course wasn't his job. I feel hiring someone to direct tours in the morning would help alleviate this issue.

The whole trip was my favorite part. The boat is comfortable, the captain (Chris) was very good and had a good voice over the speaker, the naturalist aboard was informative and crystal clear on the speaker, the crew was efficient, and we had lots of whale sightings. We were on a Pacific Whale Foundation trip a # of years ago. This year our hotel suggested a less expensive tour, but we indicated we preferred this one because the boat was comfortable and the information provided was what we wanted. We weren't sorry. Comparing our catamaran to some of the smaller, more cramped boats out at at the same time was really no comparison.

To start, you must know that this review is biased because we were incredibly lucky on our whale watch tour. The entire crew was very friendly and helpful. They communicated very clearly and made sure everyone was comfortable. We chose the ‘small-group whale watch’ which had about 20 people which was the perfect size for us. I have nothing to back this up, but I think the smaller boats are less likely to scare the whales.

Now I know the crew can’t control this, but we literally saw whales for essentially the whole two hours. A whale started tail-flapping right out of Lahaina Harbor. After watching that a bit, we boated south away from the other tour boats. We were the only boat around a couple of adult whales and an estimated 6 week old calf. Multiple breaches by the adults and the calf (the Flying Pickle!) and the whales were so close to our boat that the spray got some folks wet (whale boogers!). One of the whales even swam just below our boat and then right alongside it. It was really fun watching how excited the crew got, because this wasn’t the typical tour. But it also showed their passion for what they do, so even if the whales aren’t as active, you’re in great hands with PAC-Whale Eco Adventures!

Just went on our second PWF whale watch this week and the bar was set very high after our first trip. Much to my amazement this trip was even more incredible. The captain positioned his boat perfectly and we got to witness a female whale tail slapping for five minutes straight trying to attract males. Within a couple of minutes we had five males jostling for position. The battle between the males and the constant tail slapping was one if the most amazing things I have ever witnessed.

If you plan on going on a whale watch tour you should join the PWF. They give you a free trip and you get priority boarding. The money you spend with them goes directly to the support of these incredible creatures. They are by far the best. We will be members for life!

The crew was great. Whale season was basically over but they thought there may be a few around. We ended up being in an area with at least 10 whales. The captain stayed with them and we followed about 7 of them for at least 45 minutes. It was amazing and pacific whale company does good things for whales highly recommend going with them. Captain Chris is awesome!

Every time whales were spotted, the captain turned the bow of the boat towards them. Only a few passengers are able to be seated up there, leaving the rest of us seated at the back or standing on the sides. Consequently, we were unable to see the majority of whale activity. Prior boats I've been on, have let the boat idle to the side of whales, allowing passengers the ability to pass from side to side and see the activity. Then they continued on to the next group of whales to watch. Many of the passengers, not just in my group, were disappointed with only the passengers at the very front being able to whale watch. The scenery of the islands was nice.

Aloha and thank you for bringing this to our attention as the captains should position the boat so all guests can see the whales. It is sometimes only through such direct feedback that we find out about such issues, so we thank you for your time in alerting us. I welcome you to contact me directly at johngaskins@pacwhale.com to discuss a partial refund if such actions ruined your experience. Mahalo.

We recently took the 7am Lahaina whale watching tour on the Ocean Explorer with Captain Dan, Andi and Cat. What a fantastic experience! Whales were plentiful and the trip was very successful. We saw a baby whale playing near its mother as well as quite a few males competing to show their respective strengths. We even had some whales swim under our boat. We saw our first "blowbows" (blow rainbows). The trip was incredible and on top of that, we felt good about supporting Pacific Whale Foundation. Overall, thanks to Dan, Andi and Cat along with PacWhale Eco Adventures for a marvelous trip. We've already booked another trip with them to snorkel at Molokini.

It was my first ever whale watch and I was not disappointed.

The crew was awesome and the naturalists were great! Very informative tour not just a look and watch for whales type of money being spent.

Due to COVID-19 and county regulations, I feel the company did great with efforts towards safety while allowing us to experience the beauty of our marine life and Hawai’i.

The assigned seating was not a bother to me BUT I believe there should boundaries. It makes it difficult to see what is happening when people are allowed to stand up and walk around once we hit the deep waters and they have no respect or courtesy. Why would you stand right in front of someone blocking their view?? Even when I would stand they would just scoot their way close into me. MIND YOU, I am short and most of ya’ll are tall so you can clearly see what is happening from above me haha.

So I think allowing them to only stay in their assigned area is great. There were times when the whale would be in the back but I wouldn’t go back there because I didn’t want to block others’ views. However, if this is not possible, the crew should be reminding people to be courteous not to block anyone due to excitement.

Another thing I think needs improvement deals with wearing our face masks. Yes, crew members will tell us and remind those who have it off to use it correctly, but some will not put it on or listen! If those people do not listen or put it on, the crew members should stay put until the person puts it on or the crew member should tell that person to remain seated at their assigned seat if they will be walking around without a mask on.

Anyways, I loved the tour. Great company. We saw much whales (maybe luck?) and our captain stayed at a legal distance. It gets hot so I’d recommend bringing sunscreen to reapply and maybe a hat. You can also bring your own food and drinks (not alcohol) on the boat to eat.

Worth the $$$
