This was a blast! Zipping along the trail with overhanging brush swatting the ATV as we whooshed past felt a bit like being in an off-roading video game. The views were great and the terrain was just challenging enough to be fun without feeling unsafe or anxious.
The ATVs were easy to operate even, for someone like me who had no prior experience. There were just two of us in the vehicle. We saw other parties with 3 and 4. There were about 8-10 ATVs in our group plus one guide leading in the front and one in the rear.
There are two stops, thus three legs of the trip. You can switch drivers each time if you want (as long as they signed disclosure and brought driver's license). If you have someone in your party who is a bit more apprehensive have them drive the third (final) leg of the trip which is the easiest.
There is a "glove compartment" in each vehicle where you can put your phones, keys and water. Yes, you will get dirty and dusty.
The conditions on our ride were great, not very muddy, and we didn't really get thaaat dirty, but this could vary quite a bit based on the weather.
The guides were great, friendly and helpful. This was a fun experience and well worth the time.

The tour we attended was a lot of fun. Helmet and goggles are provided, as is a small space in each ATV for purses/bags/water bottles. I recommend arriving at the check-in time having already gone to the bathroom, sunscreen on, and close-toed shoes on. Bathroom was in a neighboring building and was only 1 person at a time when we went, so takes about 5-10 minutes for 2 people to leave the area and go to the bathroom. Sneakers/tennis shoes are probably fine, but I recommend hiking shoes as EVERYTHING will get muddy and hiking shoes have better grip on muddy soil. I also recommend bringing water is there is no water stop/area.
Mud gets everywhere (hair, face, shoulders, arms, torso, legs, socks, shoes, EVERYTHING), so wear clothes/jewelry that you don't mind getting dirty b/c it may not wash off, even clothes under the outer layer got muddy.
We had a great time! My husband took the 1st and 3rd sections. I took the middle, unknowingly, this section was the muddiest since it was at the highest elevation. We had fun slipping and sliding and enjoying the less touristy areas of Hawaii. Definitely a bumpy ride, but we were all happy screams and giggles. For those who don't like loud engines, you may want to bring ear plugs since there are a lot of windows and it gets a little loud. A thin extra layer might be nice for those who get cold easily, too.
At the end, they provide a quick rinse in an outdoor faucet for you to wash off mud from your skin. So it's probably helpful to bring a dry and dark towel to dry yourself or lay in the car so that the car doesn't get too dirty. Could also bring a change of clothes for those who don't like sitting in dirty clothes until the next stop.
Thanks again!

We had an excellent time! Things you should know right off the bat. You will get dirty. Follow the recommendations on the website and email wear long sleeves and clothes you don’t mind getting filthy. I’d even suggest a neck / face gator. You’ll take a trail ride and be behind at least one other vehicle, so you’ll be eating a ton of dust, dirt and possibly mud. Your experience will be heavily influenced by the conditions on the trails and the other drivers in your tour group. Too wet or too dry and the tour will have to slow based on safe speeds. If you have a driver that doesn’t keep pace with the lead vehicle, your tour will be slow. We got lucky and had good conditions and some good drivers. We exceeded 25 mph several times and on these trails and terrain that seemed really fast.
We found the staff to be very friendly, accommodating and helpful. We made a couple of stops on the 2 hour tour and learned a lot about the area and history. I highly recommend this experience for couples or families. But understand this is a group trail ride. Your not off on your own, so you need to know that and temper your expectations. We found this to be quite a fun day and would definitely do it again!

Unethical, disrespectful and unprofessional. If I could give them zero or negative stars, I would. I booked a trip with Maui Off Road Adventures several weeks ago. On Friday, they called me literally saying "We have a larger group that wants your tour time slot. We are going to give it to them because they are bigger. Do you want us to move your tour to another day and time?" So they could not care less that I booked first and should not get bumped just because someone else is offering to pay them more money. I was absolutely stunned by such complete lack of professionalism and ethics and had them cancel my tour, as I will not deal or even pay a penny to a company that operates this way. They do not deserve to be in business. Be aware that your reservation with this company will never be safe and there is always a chance that you will get bumped if someone else comes around offering them more money for your time slot/tour.

We had road with Maui Off-Road when they had their other operation on the southeast part of the island and we had a phenomenal time and the bar was set pretty high. Unfortunately, this was a larger group and quite a bit more tame than before. It seemed like we only criss-crossed and explored a small area of the lower part of the island. Maybe because of the people that we had to wait for or the trails they took us on kept crossing which forced us to wait at every turn. 3 vehicles missed a turn and we had to wait for them to find us.
All the employees had an excellent attitude.
4x4’s and equipment were in great shape but wish they had utilized our time better to explore the part of the island they they access.

We loved this experience! We had a group of 6 ranging from ages 16-56 and we all loved it! It was fun and safe - Tanner and Jeff were excellent guides! They shared a bit of history of the islands and also allowed us to take part in the reforestation project so it allowed us to feel a part of giving back to the island. We did of course get very dusty but wore our dirty clothes proud as proof of our adventure. Definitely recommend a bandana or dust mask in addition to the safety gear they give you or you may have dusty teeth from smiling and laughing! They have one guide leading and one trailing so you can drive at the pace you feel comfortable and not worry about being separated or getting lost. We would do this again, it was that fun!

Our family had a blast. It was suitable for younger kids but adventurous enough for the teens. It was an easy location to get to and offered great views. We have done UTV excursions on another Hawaiian island and this was a similar experience. We enjoyed that there was varied terrain and it was a little more adventurous than others we’ve done. The history of the area was nice too. The vehicles felt safe, the guide was very good and staff was overall very friendly and helpful. It is more expensive than others we’ve done in Hawaii and is a costly activity, so it’s a splurge, but worth it in my opinion.
The language in waivers/instructions beforehand was a little off putting, seemed far more onerous than other Hawaiian ATV tours and didn’t always match with what actually transpired. One poor family came in full long pants and long sleeves after reading the information and was miserably hot. Long sleeves were not enforced and even our guide didn’t wear long pants and pushed up his sleeves the entire time. Also our tour time was a smaller one which was good but only was allocated one guide. We were near the end of the line of UTVs and with the dusty, twisty trails it was not always easy to see where the previous vehicles went while maintaining a safe distance as recommended. We didn’t make any wrong turns but did have to stop a few times to figure out which way the group went.
This is a dirty but fun excursion! Tip - We’ve learned over the years that it’s easier to bring older clothes we can just toss afterwards for these excursions.

Four of us booked two UTVs and had a great tour. Be ready to eat a lot of dust, because the entire tour you will be behind another vehicle stirring up the fine red sand, you will get dirty. So glad we had extra face masks from the COVID days, because they trapped a ton of dirt that would have otherwise made it down our lungs. We highly recommend wearing a mask under your helmet. No refreshments are provided, so bring your own water. There is a glove box that you can secure your phones, etc, even though they will tell you to leave everything in your car. The vehicles ran great over the rough and windy terrain. If you don't enjoy being bounced around, this is not for you. Otherwise, it is a thrill, enjoy!

These guys (and gal) did an amazing job being aware of any needs as they came up. They also were very informative and showed that they cared about being good stewards of this world in which we live.
They even made a flat tire on one of the vehicles be just a minor blip in the total experience.
I highly recommend this adventure!

This was hand down my favorite excursion we did in Maui. Action and adventure with an exceptional staff that ensures we remained safe without taking all of the fun out of riding ATVs through mountain trails. I would recommend this 10 times out of 10 to anyone looking for a great activity in Maui!

Looking at West Maui, how bumpy / jarring of a ride? Is it hard on the back?

I was worried because I have lower back pain (I think herniated disk) and my husband needs knee replacements, but it was perfectly fine and we felt we maintained the full speed of the group. Had no issues whatsoever. This is really going down as a highlight of our trip… and we recommend a little rain to get the full adventure so don’t let that deter you either.

I want to book myself and my husband but I want to make sure that there wouldn't be any strangers in our vehicle? If we book would it just be my husband (driver) and myself (passenger)? Thank you

It is just your booing party in the cart with you. You have two opportunities to switch drivers amongst your own cart.
Hi,
I don't have a driver license, so you do hotel pick up and if I can just sit in the car vs. driving.
Leslie N

No they do not do hotel pickup. You have to get yourself there. And you can ride along if a member of your party has a license and driving, but they don’t drive you. At least not when we went. Each party hard their own ATV.
Do you need a license to drive an ATV or UTV?

I believe so. They ask for a license at check in.

Hello, my boyfriend and I looking for ATV tour in Halekala National Park. Are you providing this kind of service ?
Kristine M
Baldwin Park, CA49 contributions
ATV tours are not allowed in most National parks. Haleakala does not allow anything other than hiking and camping. Kipahulu district allows swimming. Maui off road is only currently offering tour in Lahaina. I took this tour and it was great although very dusty.
