Intensive day trip at historical locations

Once in a life time experience to visit all the important sights of bible. Jerusalem and Bethlehem both interesting to visit but one full day was enough of the intense religious flavor for us. The guide was a great personality and knew more than

Our First Visit to the Holy City of Jerusalem
Mar 2019
The city that was chosen by God and the city our Savior loved and even wept when the people of this city rejected their own Messiah. I can not express in words what I felt when I entered this Holy City.

Good overview of the locations, but packed and tiring schedule
May 2019 • Couples
Note: This is review of a trip of Jerusalem & Bethlehem from Tel Aviv (“from Tel Aviv" was not one of the options in the drop-down menu)

Booking class.
We booked a business-class tour, which is about 10% costlier than a regular tour. I wrongly assumed that "business class" would mean vehicle and pace would be more comfortable; in reality, one is paying extra for a smaller group that would be led faster!

Transport.
The minibus that are offered by tours have seats and leg room like the economy-class of a low cost carrier - meaning tight seat pitch and packed rows. Having experienced the pace at which these smaller tours are led, I would recommend booking the Tourist class.

The Tour
We were picked-up at a hotel in Herzliya by 0715, and transferred to another minibus alongside the exhibition grounds on Rakoch Blvd in Tel Aviv. This seems like the start point for other tour service providers, and I would recommend getting here directly (if possible).

We left Tel Aviv by about 0800 and our first stop was Bethlehem, which we reached by 0930. Enroute, our driver-cum-guide pointed towards sights and spoke about the history surrounding the location. Our group transferred into two smaller minivans and sped through to the Church of Nativity, where our guide Natalie gave us a lovely tour. We stopped briefly at a souvenir shop, and then sped back to the point to transfer to our minibus, and then drove to a parking lot near the Western Wall (1300).

From there, we were on foot, and after 30-min walk, we entered a restaurant for lunch (~1330). We had to climb 3 floors to the roof, and this was not convenient for the senior citizens on the tour. The views from the roof-top were great, although our veggie options was limited to falafel.

After lunch (~1430), it was a brisk walk through the quarters in the old city and to a few Holy sites. The Western Wall was our penultimate stop (1630), where we got about 20 mins. And then we walked back to the parking lot and drove to a restaurant on the elevated area near the University - for a restroom break and coffee/snack. We were back in the middle of Tel Aviv by around 1830, where we were booked on a taxi to our pickup point in Herzliya.

Guide.
Our driver-cum-guide spoke good English, but it felt like he was perpetually in a rush. We barely had time to shop in the markets; however, he ensured we got time to explore some of the Holy sites.

Kotel Tunnel Tours
These 1-day tours don't include a visit to the Holocaust Memorial or the Kotel Tunnel tours; some of the tours use the word "Kotel" in their itinerary - please clarify and don't assume. For those who don't know the history of the Western Wall, I would recommend the Kotel Tunnel tour be done first, since it offers a visual depiction of the history followed by a guided walk in underground tunnels. This tour can be booked on their website, but be prepared to book well in advance (~2 weeks). Ensure you have a local tel# in order to make the booking.

Camera.
I used a D90 with a Tokina 11-16 f2.8 for this tour. It was great for all outdoor photography, since there was enough light. Within the Holy sites and the tunnel tour, I missed a monopod or a lens with larger aperture.

Summary.
This is a good tour to get an snapshot of the old city of Jerusalem and a visit to Bethlehem - within a day; one should set expectations accordingly. These tours will be quick and one should be prepared to walk fast without hopes of enjoying the sights and aromas. One would ideally need 2-3 days to experience the history and culture of Jerusalem - and I doubt if any 1-day tour would do justice.

Not bad
Dec 2018
Was not a bad tour but the time was to tight. 1 day tour is not the best option bacause you need to stress on every place you get to. Dont have any time to just relax and enjoy the view or the city. Other than that, the tour was not bad!

Must visit place once in your life
Apr 2018
I am not a Jewish or christian, but I love to visit places in all religions. This is the place you have to visit once in your life. I am lucky to be there in Israel for my work and visited there during the weekend (Friday).
Most of the hotels has one day trips prepared for visitors. I would suggest you pick one trip (Group of 10-15) and visit there.

Disappointed at the waste of my time and money
Let’s get one thing out of the way first. The logistics were fine. I was picked up relatively on time and the quality of the bus was fine. That’s where it all goes to s* though. The whole thing felt like we were hostages with a driver rather than an informed tour guide.

Felt we were being rushed around too much at beautiful Jerusalem where I didn’t even have a breather to even take a picture. Finally got to this crappy restaurant which only had views going for it. Food was extremely expensive and we had no choice. Falafel or shawarmas. For 35 ILS. Take my tip and refuse this and eat at any street restaurant instead. Much better and cheaper food.

Bethlehem was a disaster. Were subjected to almost an hour of unbearable wait at this Christian religious shop even when half of us were not interested. Later, we entered the lobby of a church and that was that. As apparently it was too late to see anything else.

Do not bother. I should have done this on my own. It’s much cheaper and these holy beautiful sites deserve more attention and time. It’s not Vegas. The $122 fees was an ultimate insult. It’s just too expensive to be anything at all - leave alone a tour.

Holyland Tour by Hilik Silfin (Rent-a-Guide)
Visiting Israel was certainly amazing. We spent 6 full days visiting various places in the country. Our Guide Hilik Silfin was very friendly, prompt and knowledgeable about the geography and history of each site visited. He is passionate about tourism and this means more than just a job to him. It definitely changed my perception of this beautiful country that is so rich in history.

Some highlights of the tour included Jerusalem (both old and new), Jesus’ last moments on earth before being crucified, all the beautiful churches in and around surrounding areas, Bethlehem - place of Jesus’ birth, the home of Jesus, Holocaust museum, Garden Tomb, Mt Olive, Dead Sea, Masada and many more. Not only was he funny, he also took time to explain the history behind each site visited.

Hilik is very understanding and knowledgeable, puts our safety first, and would highly recommend him to anyone wanting to visit Israel. I am definitely blown away.

Thanks Hilik and the Rent-a-Guide team on a tour well done.

Jerusalem too short, Bethlehem too long - don't expect unbiased tour
Aug 2018 • Couples
We really only wanted Jerusalem, but were still mildly interested in Bethlehem as well. We booked through our hotel, but I wish we had booked through TripAdvisor so that we had more choices in guide company. The coach seats were small - we aren't big people, but to sit next to someone it was tight and uncomfortable (yep, as bad or worse than flying economy). The windows were dirty, so photos from inside all have water spots.
We would have loved to had a few 15 minute stops for looking around and light shopping in Jerusalem, but were told to wait until Bethlehem (more on that later). We were not given coffee or toilet breaks at all, even though several of us asked at various time during the morning. We stayed in Tel Aviv, so "come back on your time" didn't work for us. The smells of the spices and all the colors were amazing and we would have enjoyed more time with that part of the experienced. There were several squabbles between our guide and other guides - they seemed quiet comfortable being rude to each other.
Once we got to Bethlehem we were dumped into a Christian religious shop. We stayed hostage almost an hour - an this was our ONLY SHOPPING CHOICE for the duration of the tour. They offered us cups of water, but no bottled water or other beverates were available. We were also taken to a single restaurant, so no options there either, ie. eat here or go without.
Over all disappointed since there was obviously so much to see and the history is so rich.

Very Good Tour with great guides
Jun 2018 • Friends
I was very happy with both parts of the tour, the Jerusalem and Bethlehem portions.
Both Ariel and Kamil knew their history and did their best to help us navigate through the sites despite the large crowds.
It was deeply moving to see and walk through where Jesus, Mary and Joseph walked.
Jesus birthplace, tomb (temporary) according to tradition. Even if you are not a Christian you will find it touching.
Doing a tour like this yourself would be too much work, do yourself a favor and go with this tour. You also end up meeting some nice people as well.

NOT WORTH IT
Jun 2018 • Solo
I was really disappointed with this tour. If I had paid $60 I would have said it was ok. But to pay $122 dollars for this was really a waste of money.

1- First, the guide didn’t really speak spanish. He was a nice person, friendly and open to our requests but to be honest, he was struggling to find the words and I personally didn’t care that much because I understand english perfectly so I was also hearing to the english explanation, but most of the people who asked for a spanish tour really needed a tour in spanish. I could tell as well how annoyed was the english family when he was struggling so much to say things in spanish that he would even forget about explaining in english afterwards.

2- We were rushed EVERYWHERE. We didn’t have enough time to do anything, to appreciate anything. Even if you have to pay 2 extra hours to the guide, YOU SHOULD DO LONGER TOURS, UNTIL 6PM AND NOT 4PM. The guide complained we spent half an hour doing the line to see the Holy Sepulcre. Now, I’m asking, WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE COME TO ISRAEL? WHAT DO THEY WANT TO SEE? HOW CAN YOU JUST GO ALL THE WAY THERE AND NOT CARE ABOUT SEING THE HOLY SEPULCRE?
I guess you know the answers to all those questions. YOU as a company should give as ENOUGH time to do the line and see the attractions. YOU as a company can’t not blame your clients for wanting to see one of the main attractions, especially as in the description of the tour said we were going to see that.
Same in the Church of Nativity. We were rushed as if we were in the army. It was SO commercial we would hear “come come hurry up take a picture and leave”

Also, there were barely history explanations about what we saw. It would have been better to just read from the internet and learn from there. And the description of the tour said we were going to see the 4 neighbourhoods of the Old City, which of course we didn’t.

3- You treated us as stupid tourists who don’t know about prices. You recommended a place for lunch in which 1 yaguarma and 1 coke was 14 dollars. The yaguarma was honestly the worst I’ve tried in my life. I live in Paris and here they do it way better for half of the price we paid there. And I’m talking about one of the most expensive neighbourhoods in Paris. The guide said we could eat anywhere but he recommended that place and he was going to eat there, so of course we believed that if he chose that place, it would have to be good and not that expensive. Well we were wrong and I strongly believe you have an arrangement with the place in order to take tourists there and charge them a lot of money.
Same when the guide said that Palestine was cheaper than the Souk in Jerusalem’s Old City. We asked if we would find the same products and he said YES. We believed him and as we were RUSHED in a ridiculous way, we barely stop there, just to ask some prices and then left in a rush. When we arrived in Palestine you took us to ONE STORE IN WHICH PRICES WERE IN DOLLARS AND THEY WERE DOUBLE THE PRICE OF THE SOUK IN JERUSALEM. Honestly, HOW STUPID DO YOU THINK WE ARE?
You have an arrangement with that store and you took as there for us to not have any other option on where to buy. I was lucky to have spent another day in Jerusalem so I could go back to the souk to buy what I wanted but some of the people didn’t as they went all the way back to Tel Aviv and they lost the opportunity to buy their souvenirs there.

4- The guide said he was israeli so he couldn’t come to Palestine with us and we changed guides. Suddenly, when we were at the expensive store HE recommended in Palestine and HE WAS THERE. That was really strange and it makes you look not credible as a company. I got this feeling all you cared about was making us spend money either on food or on that expensive store and you didn’t even care to tell us about the history of the places, to let us appreciate the places and enjoy the tour for which we payed $122.
