Wonderful tour of Santiago!
Dec 2021
Wonderful tour of Santiago! Travelled all around the city and learned a lot of the history of the area. Also got to see some spectacular views of the city from a couple of different locations. Would highly recommend this tour for anyone!

Great Way to Safely See the Highlights of Santiago, Chile
Mar 2020
Private Santiago City Half Day Tour by MTO
Monday, 3/2/20: Santiago, Chile
Today, we embarked upon a half-day private city tour of Santiago, the capital of Chile. We were picked up at 9:00 am by Maurcio, who navigated and Jania, who provided city highlights. This was definitely a great way to see the city in a safe and efficient manner. We made several stops for short walks and photo opportunities.
We drove through the area where most of the demonstrations are held. Plaza Baquedano, also known as Plaza Italia, was built in 1928, and the features the General Manuel Baquedano monument created by Chilean sculptor Virgínio Arias.
We passed the Central Market (Mercado Central), famous for multiple seafood dining options, and fresh seafood, sold at a number of stalls. We stopped at the Plaza de Armas, Santiago’s main square in the historical area. Considered “Kilometer Zero,” Plaza de Armas is the centerpiece of Santiago’s square grid pattern, and the point where distances are measured between other cities in Chile. Designed by Pedro de Gamboa, the Cabildo, or Town Hall House (now the Municipality of Santiago), the Governors’ House (now the Central Post Office), the Real Audiencia or Royal Courthouse (now the National History Museum), and the Iglesia Mayor, or Main Church (now the Metropolitan Cathedral) frame the square. There is a statue in honor of Don Pedro de Valdivia, and the contemporary STGO art installation.
We walked through Plaza Montt Varas, also called Plaza de la Justicia, and viewed the lovely Palacio de los Tribunales de Justicia de Santiago (Courts of Justice Palace of Santiago), where the Chilean Supreme Court hears cases. There are intricate carvings along the roofline depicting the laws of Chile. Two lawyers, Manuel Montt, and Antonio Varas wrote some of Chile’s laws, are featured in a monument in the plaza.
We entered the Chilean Museum of Precolombian Art, previously, colonial government’s Royal Customs House. The Fundacion Artesanias De Chile had a shop in the lobby with handmade goods from the Aymara people who live in Northern Chile. Their specialty is working with textiles, and I found a beautiful Alpaca scarf.
We walked around the Palacio de La Moneda, previously home to the Republic of Chile’s president. Located between the streets Moneda (north), Morandé (east), the Alameda del Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins (south) and Teatinos (west), the building now houses governmental offices. The Plaza de la Constitución fronts the northern facade of the Palacio de la Moneda.
We passed by the former National Congress Building (ex Congreso Nacional), the former home of the Chilean Congress. After Salvador Allende's socialist government was overthrown by dictator Augusto Pinochet's military coup d'état September 11, 1973, Congress moved to Valparaíso. We had a quick stop to view the Bellas Artes Museum (National Museum of Fine Arts), which is across from one of Santiago’s lovely city parks.
There are two beautiful hills in Santiago with extraordinary views, Cerro Santa Lucia, and Cerro San Cristobal. Once a military look-out, Cerro Santa Lucia is accessed by a winding narrow road. A favorite of walkers and bicyclists, this is a beautiful park setting with a variety of foliage. Some areas are no longer accessible secondary to earthquake damage. Now an event center, the Castillo Hidalgo is close to the top. Unfortunately, the views were almost totally obscured by heavy smog. The Andes, while in the distance were mere faint shadows.
On the other hand, the second hill, Cerro San Cristobal, was initially designed as a recreational park. There are two major ways to get up the hill, by cable car and by funicular. Unfortunately, today, both were out of operation, so we went up by car. There are two public swimming pools, the National Zoo, and lots of space for runners, walkers and hikers. Ascending a path with several concrete crosses depicting paintings of Christ, a steep set of stairs leads to the Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception. There is an outdoor amphitheater with an altar for celebrating mass and at the summit a very large statue of the Virgin Mary overlooks the valley. On a clear day, the views would be amazing, but sadly, the smog obscured the landscape.

A wonderful way to spend our first afternoon in Santiago
We took this tour on the first afternoon we were in Santiago after an overnight flight from the US. It was a great way to start the trip with a good overview of the City. Maurice who was gracious and polite drove us, but spoke only broken English. It was still better than my virtually non existent conversational Spanish. I did realize I was in his country so the problem was mine, not his. Our guide Jesus spoke fluent English as was a wonderful guide. He showed us the City high points and “must see” sights, as well as some “reality” buy he did a good job of putting it all in perspective of history and present issues without, as far as we could tell, giving his political views. At the end we felt we know this wonderful and vibrant city better than we did when we landed.

Wonderful tour, despite the riots and graffiti!
Feb 2020
Alex was a great guide, very knowledgeable, and kind with it, he bought us bottles of water, and even a local drink made with peaches and wheat to try. The walk up Santa Lucia hill is a hike if you are getting on a bit (around 200 steps up) but the views are really good from the top. He took us there first, then up St Christobel, which is a lot higher, but as he knew the guards at each checkpoint, managed to drive us virtually to the top.

The centre of Santiago has much of the beautiful buildings spoiled by graffiti and closed to the public to protect them from further damage. This includes the Cathedral and you can't get close to the Parliament buildings for obvious reasons. But it didn't spoil our delight in this tour, it was worth it just for the two hills alone. And Alex of course!

Good tour
We did not have a lot of time in Santiago just a couple of days at the end of a cruise, so this tour was great because it gave us an overview of the city. We were picked up at our hotel. Our driver was very polite, friendly & very knowledgeable about the people & places he took us. His commentary throughout the tour showed his knowledge and love of the city. We were dropped back to our hotel at the end. A good way to see the highlights of a city

Santiago half day city tour
Feb 2020 • Couples
Firstly, our driver Marcelo, he was very courteous, friendly and extremely knowledgeable. We visited all the places listed on the itinerary, and although a very hot day we were not rushed about. We had plenty of time to absorb all the sights and all the information that Marcelo kindly provided. His English language was excellent. He made us feel very welcome in Chile and left us feeling that we should have spent more time in Santiago. A good ambassador for Chile. Thank you so much for a wonderful afternoon Marcelo we will not forget this trip for all the right reason's.
