This was such a wonderful tour. Although the high down was steep, the lake was simply beautiful and made it worthwhile. The hike was the most difficult in my life, but it's great to be able to claim I made it. The trip was definitely worth the price I paid.

I enjoyed the tour a lot. Alex, the guide was very prepared, always willing to answer your questions and help you out and flexible. The driver (another Alex) was careful and the trip was pleasant. The minivan was spacious and covid friendly.

We respected the schedule and learnt a lot about Quito and surroundings and Ecuador in general. I really recommend it!

Thank you!

Alex was the kindest tour guide I've ever had. He's incredibly knowledgeable and really cares about you and your experience. He loves his country and is happy to show other people his beautiful country. In this tour, we drove through the Andes and stopped at small indigenous towns before arriving at Quilotoa. My boyfriend and I sat with him on the bus and we talked about practically everything. I will give one piece of advice: take the mule back up the lagoon! This hike was the most difficult things I have ever done, but Alex let us take our time and walked with us every step of the way. Thank you Alex!

We had a pleasant trip to Lake Quilotoa. The lake is beautiful and the weather was perfect!

Important preparations: you will need a mask, scarf or some kind of face (nose/mouth) covering! The dust kicked up by all the donkeys and tourists will suffocate you! Of course, don’t forget sunglasses and sun block.

Despite a decent experience, I do have a couple remarks pursuant to the execution of the tour which would have significantly improved the quality of the tour.

1) An adequate breakfast should be provided. The morning stop by the market is primarily a cultural experience (in my opinion). It does not offer excellent opportunity to enjoy a proper meal, which will benefit individuals embarking on the long day to Quilotoa. The food at the market is mostly produce or inedible raw meats. Previously, we took a trip to Cotopaxi (another tour company), where the guide stopped at a rural family owned bed and breakfast that catered the group’s meal. Would strongly recommend this tour providing something similar.

2) Significant improvement to punctuality is needed!! We were the first stop returning to Quito (San Blas Plaza). Although the itinerary indicates we would return at 6:15 pm, we did not arrive until 8:30pm. There was significant delay departing in the morning, with no obvious justification to the delay. Traffic conditions were better than we could have wished for (streets were empty on Sunday morning) and yet, we still seemed to fall behind schedule, despite the advantage. Lunch was to be provided by 2:30 , according to the schedule, however it was nearly 4 before our group was served. The kitchen appeared overwhelmed by our group of 30. Recommend that the kitchen start preparing the food in advance so that it is ready promptly at 2:30, or reasonably close to that time. I believe such poor execution led to serve delay in our return. We found this very frustrating, since there were no restaurants open at the late hour of our return on a Sunday evening in Quito (old town area).

Marco was a chipper guide and the bus was extremely comfortable for the long ride! We were very happy with the quality of transit.

Overall, I believe the tour has great potential and room for improvement. With some minor adjustments to correct items 1 and 2 above, this would be a 5-star tour.

Family
My family and I just completed the trip to Quilotoa for the “Full-Day Quilotoa Lake Hiking Tour”. The trip was great if you want to spend the full day in a bus. We spent over 7 hours in the bus and a grand total of approximately 80 minutes at the physical Quilotoa Lake. I am very disappointed that we only got to spend this minimal time at the primary activity.

The guide talked for about 30 minutes when we left Quito and then we did not hear from him until the bus stopped for his friend. His friend, as the guide referred to him as, was on the bus for about 30 minutes trying to sell his art. We then spent 45 minutes at a market where before we got off the guide told us to only buy bread and fruit because the other foods “are not always prepared correctly”. We then spent about 20 minutes at an indigenous house and another 20 at a ravine (they charged $1 to use the bathroom). We then made it to Quilotoa, where there was no real direction or timeline provided. We went by ourselves down in about 30 minutes, so we had about 20 minutes at the lake (where bathrooms were $.50 to use). We were told to make our way back up and wait in a resuaturant (where the proprietor didn’t seem to understand we were just waiting for our bus ride to begin). We had a 30-minute donkey ride back up the trail where we had to wait for everyone to make it back up.
We then had a 1-hour lunch that was good and was followed by the 3.5 hour ride back to Quito where on the way, about 1 hour before we arrived in Quito, the guide said he had to get off the bus. He then told the group that tips were not included in the cost of the trip and proceeded to walk down the aisle and shake everyone’s hands, in what I believe was an attempt to get tips before he departed since he never shook anyone hands when we meet earlier that day.

Overall, I guess it was a good trip to view the country side in a bus, but not a hiking tour which is what was advertised. I understand that the itinerary has travel time and other activities, but it also says 2.5 hours at the lake. We got 1.5. My main disappointment was that I spent a day of our vacation on a bus and not enjoying the hiking tour we paid over $300 for.

Dear Dan, Thank you very much for your detailed review and for sharing this with all of us, I can understand your disappointment about the timing of the activities of the trip which, by the way is clearly described in our page. Quilotoa day trip is actually one of those trips that involves a lot of traveling for a day trip, nevertheless, the activities along the route are very interesting, and show a lot of the culture around this part of the Andes, when we actually arrive in Quilotoa we always have enough time to hike down to the lake and if you do it before the rest of the group, you can even rent a Kayak and have better taste of the lake, of course this will have an extra charge, as the bathrooms you mentioned, please we should keep in mind that most of this indigenous communities are finally finding a way to make a living thanks to tourism, that is why we are always trying to support them, when you return to the top what we always try to do is to wait for the whole group to get together and enjoy our lunch, remember that is a shared activity and this sometime make that activites last a bit longer than usual. Regarding with the performance of the guide, we are really surprised he was this peevish with the clients and this for sure deserves at least a good conversation and a call of atension to him, we really appreciate that you took the time to write to us this review, and even when this obviously dont makes us happy, certainly helps a lot to take better care of the issues you pointed. I would love to offer you our apologies for that day and we really hope that the rest of your time in Ecuador will be a total success. Yours. Ecuatraveling Team

I had a great time on the day-long Quilotoa tour. Everything went smoothly and each of the stops (Saquisilí, indigenous hut, canyon, and Quilotoa crater lake) was memorable. Our tour guide, Alex, was stellar and gave us a ton of interesting history and information about Ecuador, including a few traditional legends about the volcanoes we passed by. Highly recommend.

Decided to book a day-trip to Quilotoa via Ecuatraveling and I’m happy I did! The trip was perfectly organised and the tour guide provided us with lots of information. In addition to visiting Laguna Quilotoa, you are also going to visit a local market and an indigenous hut. Can only recommend Ecuatraveling and will book another day-trip via them soon!

This tour starts in Quito, takes in a local market, a traditional high altitude family home - very authentic and the creator lake. The creator lake is the highlight of the tour, amazinh views from the top, a sandy walk down (about 1/2 hour), a rest or canoe paddle at the bottom, then the option to walk up (over 1 hour steep climb) or a horse ride. The tour was well organised, booking was simple and the staff very helpful. The guides was great and their English easy to understand. A great day tour and a must if you have the time while in Quito

We really enjoyed the trip to quilotoa and all of the stops! The market for breakfast was great and really interested! We also loved visitng the indigenous family. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and nice. He stayed with my friends and me when we were having trouble hiking back up and didn't rush us! The only thing was the bus was quiet crowded and some people had to sit in seats that weren't as comfortable (I got a seat in the front that was pretty tight). Overall, would still recommend and book with this company just make sure you get there early enough to get a good seat on the bus!

Hello Maryam, Thank you for your review! The altitude is so challenging but you did a great job. It's important to besides getting back up again also being able to enjoy your time there! Sorry to hear that the bus was very full that day. We always work with a maximum of passengers so that everything goes comfortable in the tour. We take this into consideration. Nevertheless, we are happy that you had such a good experience! Safe travels

I went with Ecuatraveling to both Quilotoa and Cotopaxi on day tours. Both were great! Quilotoa was absolutely breathtaking and while Cotopaxi was frigid and windy, we still had a great time climbing to the refuge and returning down to a tranquil lagoon on mountain bikes.

The guides were friendly and knowledgable about the regions being visited, the tours were well organized and allowed for enough free time to enjoy yourself, and lunch was included. Also, the office staff was very helpful at booking. Would definitely recommend :)
