Great excursion!
Sep 2019 • Couples
Historically captivated monastery in the mountains near Sofia. Already the drive there shows beautiful side of Bulgaria. The monastery has a long and interesting history which was well explained by our guide George. The kitchen used to feed 500 monks in the past was especially impressive. The tower requires some effort to climb but the views are worth it. On our way back we visited the Boyana church. The frescos here were amazing. A great day thanks to our wonderful guide George.

Excellent excursion with a great guide
Jul 2019 • Friends
Rila Monastery was breathtaking. The frescoes, as in all Eastern Orthodox churches I visited on this trip, told a story of good and evil with vivid details and imagination. Completed in 1846, the frescoes are the work of the famous Bulgarian muralist Zahari Zograf and his brother, the icon artist Dimitar Zograf. They have been restored recently and the hues really pop in the sun. Our guide explained the significance of select panels of the frescoes, and gave us some free time to explore. We then set off on a short hike, during which we visited the tomb of Ivan of Rila and completed a so-called saintly act (I won't spoil the surprise for you). We then had lunch (chicken or fish, or you can order off the menu). On the way back to Sofia, we stopped by Boyanna Church, a UNESCO world heritage site (just like Rila Monastery). Its frescoes date back to the 11th and 13th century, and to protect these treasures, groups are allowed into the conditioned space in small numbers (usually 10) at a time. All in all, the day was extremely enjoyable, with a fun guide (Lachezar) and some nice travel companions we met during the excursion.

Trip to Bulgaria 2019
Jun 2019 • Friends
Thank you to our tour guide Lacho who has been so enthusiastic and making the whole trip so informational. The trip to Rila Monastery is something I would really remember wherein I felt a sense of peace inside the church and amaze with the artworks on the wall of the monastery.

Excellent Guide, Beautiful Monastery
Nov 2018 • Family
My daughter and I were greeted by our guide on time outside our hotel. We traveled comfortably in the van while hearing so many things about Sophia, Bulgaria, and the Monastery. Because of the time of year, there weren't many other tourists at this beautiful peaceful place. Our guide could have been a history professor with all of the interesting information he shared with us. I was full of questions because my Dad was born in Bulgaria and I am also Orthodox. The iconography was breath taking. I would love to go back in the summer in warmer weather. The only disappointment was the lunch that was served at the end of the tour, the traditional bean soup was delicious but the chicken very dry. Having had a choice between 2 or 3 meals would have been nice.

Rila monastery
Oct 2018 • Solo
This is one of the largest monasteries in Europe. It's history goes back to the middle ages when it also served as,a fortress. Unfortunately there are now only 10-12 monks living there. I believe they occasionally rent out rooms there. It's well worth a visit.

A long day out from Sofia for not a great deal
Jun 2018 • Couples
Wasted a day visiting this place. OK the rain didn't help and the fact the electricity made matters worse.
Lousy restaurants serving poor food.
Surely in 2018 there is no excuse for smelly toilets?
The last Monastery we will ever visit.

May 2018
great scenery all the way, our guide took us to a nice cafe overlooking the river, next to the rila there is a tiny village with amazing foods, we visited a fish restaurant, they catch fishes from the river and serve them, great meal at excellent price, the rila is gorgeous and so was the Boyana church. Well worth it

Great guide makes all the difference
Feb 2018 • Friends
Rila Monastery is well worth a visit and it is also an opportunity to see some beautiful countryside for those otherwise focussed on the city. But the real bonus was our guide, Chimmi, who provided us with all sorts of insights into life in Bulgaria. She made the day very special.
