Glad we didn’t spend all day. Not had to see the lock
We didn’t do a tour. We just had a taxi take us to the closest lock. We checked it out with no boat coming through.

We had paid for Full Transit Boat Tour but because of covid there were not operating. We had to pay extra U$131 per person for Alternative Canal crossing tour, it was like paying again for the Monkey Island and Panama Canal Tour. Day tour and the driver were great, the person was friendly and explain everything, it was a very interesting day. Only complain was the price of the tour, we felt like we paid twice = our first U$250 per person was like not credited.

Hello. We understand. But this is a different tour, since we travel along the banks of the Canal, then we sail Gatun Lake where we sail alongside large ships. Later we go to Monkey Island. Then the second phase of the tour consists of traveling by vehicle through the Canal from south to north and crossing one of its bridges. Later we go to the entrance and exit of the Canal on the Pacific Ocean. This is an Alternative tour, not only includes Monkey island, which may be the tour that you saw with that price of $ 131. This is a complete tour that goes through the Canal by boat, then by Vehicle and we also go to the Canal Visitor Center, Miraflores Locks. It is a complete tour of the Panama Canal.

We really wanted to take this tour and we’re very glad we did. It was a very long day (starting at 5:30 am pickup and 7:30 pm drop off) but worth the time. If there was any complaint it would be that the seating was not particularly comfortable (hard plastic chairs on the top deck, which is where you want to spend most of your time). Lots of opportunities for pictures and a good learning experience through the narrator on board. The food was good and the staff were nice. You take a bus ride home which is not particularly exciting but it does take you through a couple of smaller towns. We went on the trip before Covid became an issue so not sure how it would be done now.

It was a great day out. We did the full trip to get the whole experience. It is a long day so just doing the first half could be enough for many people. It's worth staying at a hotel where they will pick up so you don't have to worry about early morning transport, and they will bring you back.

A dream come true, transiting the Panama Canal by boat. Thanks to Panama Canal Tours, trip organized by Ivantours. The locks are impressive, Gatun Lake is huge. The best tour.

Our trip was through Panama Grayline.com and the company was Canal and Bay Tours. The tour is long but it is interesting and a marvel of man and his accomplishments. Our problem was at the end of the tour. The tour ends at night and a bus takes you from Colon back to Panama City. Everyone was dumped into the back lot parking lot and basically abandoned in the dark of night, limited lighting. The office was closed and the tour guide almost ran from the bus once he told us all to get off the bus. I have never been on a paid tour where they pick you up from your hotel and abandon you at the end. The end of was total chaos in that parking lot, everyone wondering where our way back to our hotel was. Total disregard for the paying customer!

The tour was actually from Canal and Bay Tours. I highly recommend taking the full transit. Boating across Gatun Lake was a bit long but rewarded by passing through the Gatun Locks. If Agua Claras is not possible as the boat is not of the size needed for Agua Claras. Our bad experience started with not being able to dock which meant a two hour delay. Then not enough seats on the bus. I sat on a box in the aisle. Finally, we were all taken to back to Playita to redistribute into two hotel buses; half a hour out of the the way. Then our bus driver did not know our hotel so we got off last enough though we had passed several times near our hotel. Again I would not recommend this company for a tour. Our tour started with a pick up at 5:30 AM and end at 10:00 PM dropped back at the hotel.

Don’t book a tour with this operator. They did not show up for the tour and did not cancel it. We had another tour booked to San Blas islands (different tour operator) and the operator promptly canceled the tour due to the pandemic before our arrival in the country so we were able to plan for another excursion. This tour operator (ivantour) did not cancel and was unresponsive to multiple attempts to reach them by us and the Panama City tourist police who went above and beyond to help us out. We wasted time and money going to a tour that didn’t happen.

The full ocean to ocean transit of the Panama Canal was exactly what I was looking for, but it is not for everyone. I wanted the total experience of travelling from one ocean to another which is exactly what the trip provided. However, it is an extremely long day. If you're just looking for an understanding of how the locks work or have children, this is probably not the trip for you. After being picked up at 6AM, we completed the transit of the Miraflores locks and the Pedro Miguel lock around noon. At this point, we docked and the folks who chose the partial transit exited the boat. We then continued sailing for approximately 3 hours before we reached the Gatun Lake locks. It was about 5:30PM by the time we docked at Colon and transferred to a bus back to Panama City. Once back to Panama City, the bus stopped at the office to drop some of the group off, and then headed off to drop the remaining folks off at hotels. It was 7:30PM or so by the time we got back to our hotel, and we were some of the first to be dropped off! Overall great experience but be forewarned its a LONG day!

Great, informative trip. Recommended to do the full transit even if Lake Gatun can feel a bit long, but we saw several ships there as well. All in all, one more down on the bucket list. :)

We really enjoyed our trip. I was a little surprised as we boarded by the sheer number of people (240 passengers) on such an apparently small ship, but it went very well. You were able to move around the boat quite freely (except for the bow on the top deck, which was hogged for the duration by some rather inconsiderate folk!) and were called to eat in terms of your colour of bracelet and the food was ok.
But the real reason for this is the experience! It was absolutely fascinating going through the locks and seeing the engineering and HUGE ships coming and going. The time flew past.
I was also on the trip which had problems docking in Colon at the end of the trip, but these things happen, and from what I gather, everyone did get off safely, if a little delayed.
