Hungry Like the Wolf
Sep 2021
This was perhaps one of the best tours we've ever participated in, anywhere in the world!

We were picked up at our apartment by one of our hosts, Angel, and then driven out to the Bazurto Market to buy the ingredients for our lunch. This would have been worth the cost of the entire tour alone - the market covers a vast area, teeming with locals buying and selling goods of all kinds. Stepping into its maze-like interior is a little intimidating (especially if you're not fluent in Spanish!), but no worries - Angel guided us through the various shops and stalls, stopping to get us some tasty samples, shopping for produce and fresh fish, greeting various friends and acquaintances, and all the while providing us with all sorts of information (about the market, Cartagena, Colombia and a bit of his personal biography.

Leaving the market, we then drove to his family's home in the Andalucia neighborhood. We were greeted there by his lovely wife, Maria, and her assistant, and then began preparing our meal. Our hosts made sure to keep the conversation flowing when they weren't instructing us, and, over the course of three hours, we all got to know a bit about each other (and, of course, Colombian cuisine!). With such pleasant company and plenty to do, time flew by and, seemingly before I knew it, it was time to eat!

We were joined for lunch by Angel and Maria's son (I am SO sorry, but I can't recall the young man's name just now), a college student and very friendly young man. We all ate our delicious home-cooked meal together, and continued our great conversation throughout. When we were finished, we said our goodbyes (but not before they gave us a special parting gift!) and Angel and his assistant drove us back to our apartment in the Centro district.

We spent about 9 days in Colombia, and I would say that this was the most enjoyable, most educational and most rewarding experience we had during our time there. I cannot recommend this tour (or any tour with Duran Duran) highly enough!

So happy I took this class!
Dec 2020
Wonderful! It was the exact thing we wanted: to experience the real Cartagena.

My boyfriend is a big fan of cooking and I am a big fan of learning new things (I will note, I am an awful cook).

Angel Duran picked us up from our hotel and brought us to meet Maria at a supermarket on the way to the Andalucia (as in Andalucia, Spain) neighborhood of Cartagena. At the market, Maria and Angel were very informative and patient explaining the local produce that we were not familiar with the US.

I should note, this tour is typically at an open-air market to shop for ingredients. Due to the pandemic, Angel and Maria thought it was safest to shop at a supermarket.

We gathered our ingredients and headed to Maria's house in Andalucia. She then gave us a ton of information on how to make our meal from scratch, including a wonderful tomato drink I fell in love with!

Maria was beautiful and charming! Her kitchen is a place of love for food. She was helpful in explaining how to prepare the food to me.

My boyfriend was very excited to learn her method of preparing rice and fish.

10/10 I would do it again! Angel is very intelligent and passionate about showing off his town. A MUST take ANY of Duran Duran tours you see on Viator. You will get a real local experience.

Tip, if you take this cooking class, give Paco (dog) a head scratch.

Great experience
Feb 2020 • Couples
Angel Duran picked us up from our hotel and drove us to the Bazuto Market, we were joined by his daughter Daniella who is learning the business but is already very good. The market itself is chaotic but Angel was an excellent guide weaving us through the stalls, letting us taste various fruits and explaining how Colombians use them in their daily lives. All the while we were picking up the ingredients for the meal we would learn to cook.

Once all the shopping was complete, he led us out of the maze back to the car for the short drive to his house, where his wife Maria took over.

She is an amazing cook and a patient teacher. We made coconut rice flavored with Panella, a raw brown sugar that added a caramel flavor to the rice. We made a simple vegetable salad. The main course was fish stuffed with vegetables cooked in coconut milk. The second side dish was fried plantains. She also made us a drink that was a mixture of milk and one of the exotic fruits from the market.

The end result was one of the best meals we had in Colombia and a great time.

Highly recommend this great personal cooking experience

Wonderful Market Tour and Cooking Class
Jan 2020
We had a wonderful time with Maria and Roger. The Bazurto Market is the real deal and you will relish the sights, sounds and smells of a vibrant working market. After completing our shopping, we went to Maria's spotless and comfortable home where we prepared our delicious meal of fish, plantain, salad, coconut rice and fresh juice.

This was a lot of fun and Maria is both a fabulous chef and a gracious host.

Public markets with their fruits, vegetables and unexpected things allow us to measure and meet societies and their people in their most natural essence. Enjoying the colors, smells and the wide gastronomy of a tourist destination is another way to know, travel and enjoy. Thank you very much for your kind, simple and nice comment. Wonderful day with Maria and Roger
My wife and I had a wonderful experience seeing, shopping, and trying numerous fruits in the market. We then went to Maria’s house where she led the group in cooking a Columbian meal with Cartagenan special Arroz con Coco Frito (not to be missed).

Wonderful experience, not to be missed!

A fun family affair
Senor Duran & his family offer a very prompt, professional service and authentic local experience including a market visit and in-home cooking course. It was a family affair run by a lovely local family for our family of 4 visiting from Montreal Canada (with 2 hard to please/impress teens). The bilingual approach offered great language practice and cultural exchange for all of us at different levels of Spanish mastery. Senor Duran, his wife Maria and son were very informative, open and pleasant to spend time with. Immersing in the massive local market was very interesting and not something we would have ventured to do on our own. We got to see the hustle and bustle of daily life, the enormous variety of local produce and even sample some during the market tour where we purchased ingredients for our meal (we had a generous choice from 6 menu options!). Father & son were great at pointing out various local varieties and customs along the way. They warmly welcomed us into their clean, comfortable home, gave us aprons and put us to work to prepare a tasty, wholesome fish meal with salad, fried plantains and coconut rice. The fresh passion fruit juice was refreshing. Tigether we enjoyed a very typical, tasty homemade (cocina de casera) meal with many laughs along the way. Generous portions! We even got to meet the family dog Paco who was very friendly too! Highly recommend this as a very worthwhile activity if you are looking for contact with local people and culture. Save your appetite before going ( light breakfast or cafe only beforehand). Buen provecho y salud! Carla

Excellent Bazurto Market tour
Nov 2019
We did only the Bazurto Market tour, then stopped at his home for a coffee & a quick lesson on making coconut rice. The market is one of the highlights of Cartagena & should be done with a guide. We were 4 people & Duran Duran was excellent. Highly recommend.

Insiders view of Cartagena
Roger picked us up at our hotel and brought us to the market area to meet Maria, our chef and teacher. We walked through the entire market with witty banter from Roger, an English teacher and guide. The market was quite a site. People everywhere and an unimaginable variety of products. Even though nothing is refrigerated, there was no smell at all. Everything is just that fresh! We tried fruits that we’ve never seen and learned that there are 14 types of mangos native to Colombia.

After gathering our supplies, we went to Maria’s home to cook. We chopped, stirred and learned about Colombian food and culture. Roger taught us some Spanish while he refined Maria’s English accent. There was a great banter between the two of them.

We made stuffed fish, coconut rice, salad, plantains and fresh juice. What a feast! Don’t miss this experience.

Best Tour Ever! Learned the REAL Cartagena
Oct 2019 • Solo
This was the most amazing International tour I’ve ever been on - thanks to best tour guide Sheila G!! Shiela really taught us about the history, politics, and culture of Cartagena and Colombia through experiences. From riding the local bus to delicious fresh juices in the market to dancing Champeta and devouring food at Cecilia’s. I highly recommend this tour!! Especially for anyone who really wants to learn about Cartagena and its history - beyond the typical touristy stuff. Thanks so much Shiela! So much FUN! Glad I did this at the start of my stay - I was able to share history and knowledge with work colleagues throughout the rest of my stay.

Cartagena is always ready to surprise in different ways. Cartagena is excelent local food, history, literature, dancing and a lot more. A wise advice is to be guided by Trip Advisor and always keep in mind the first 5 positions in each activity. It is also important that before scheduling a service, you know the name of the guide, his or her professional card number and his or her RNT number. Tourisim registration number.
