My girlfriends and I booked this market tour for our first morning in Cartagena. It was an incredible introduction to Colombia. The food was just one part of it; learning about people, culture, history, economics, development, music, inequality, and authenticity. Our guide was a lovely young woman, with incredible knowledge, enthusiasm and a wonderful way of making her social/economic points in the context of the market. Lunch was delicious and an amazing experience to sit and eat in a traditional market surrounded by the bustling market activity. I would warn that this tour is not for the faint hearted - the market is noisy, dirty and crowded by American standards. But if you are a traveler and want to learn about the people and culture of the place you are visiting, this is a great tour for you.

It's easy to imagine that if you've seen Getsemani, the walled city, and the Castillo San Felipe that you've experienced Cartagena. Each of these places are superb, but when you get to the Bazurto Market, especially if you explore some of the residential areas near the market, you get a different and more accurate feel for the city and its inhabitants. We had an English speaking guide who shops at the market, and would highly recommend that. It is a gigantic, sprawling, high energy, dirty place, and could be quite intimidating if you tried to see it by yourself. Sounds yucky, and it is, but, wow! You won't forget this experience.

We absolutely recommend this tour for anyone interested in visiting Bazurto market. We considered exploring the market ourselves, but are very grateful we opted for the tour as it provided for a much more authentic and wholesome experience. Led by our guides, Christina and Daison, we explored all aspects of the market and met with a variety of different vendors that welcomed and engaged us a tourists. Christina and Daison did a great job showing us around, providing us with a unique perspective of the market but also allowing us the freedom to soak up our surroundings. Overall, we highly recommend this tour as it was one of the best experiences we had while visiting Cartagena!
On top of it all, after the tour concluded, we lost a cell phone in the taxi on our way home and the tour company and Daison went above and beyond to help us get it back! What tremendous customer support! We were already planning to provide a 5 star rating before this obstacle, but their support helping us retrieve the cell phone go to show how they value the customer experience.

This tour was our favorite part of the trip to Cartagena.
It showed parts of the authentic places in the city that would likely be inaccessible for people who weren't born there like she was. Plenty of touristic options are available for travelers in the area that you could get anywhere else in the Caribbean, but the tour guide for this made the entire experience - and she was superb.
We did a number of various island-hopping boat tours and probably tried every Old Town ceviche place you can imagine, but all of us kept mentioning that this was our favorite part of the trip when we got home. Strongly recommend.. - Eric, from Chicago.

In general Cartagena is for tourists. We did not really see the city until we took the Bazurto market tour. Sheila and Kete are local sisters who knows all about the market and the history of Cartagena. With them, we heard from local sellers, we tried juice (no stomach issues after), we learned how to dance the Champetta and we saw the locals shopping, eating, working. They knew many of the people in the market and through them and their stories we had learned a great deal about the place. The market if off Gestmani , away from the tourists' areas. It is not recommended to be there alone. With the tour, we felt safe and welcomed. This tour was the highlight of our 4 days in Cartagena.

We were lucky to have such a great and informative guide. Sheila spoke about the market and the people who work and live there with such pride that we learned so much. She took us all over the market and to certain stalls where she could explain what was being sold and how locals used all the fruits, vegetables and herbs. We ate fruits we have never seen before. We ate a fabulous lunch in one of the stall areas, prepared right in front of us and served with a smile. Everywhere Sheila took us, someone encouraged us to try something new. We met an inventive metal worker and received a poster to remember our day with. Thank you Sheila, you were fabulous!

This was perhaps the best of our 5 day trip in Colombia. our guide was terrific. The market is gritty, surprising, energetic, and stimulating. Along the way, we stopped and spoke to selected vendors who told us a bit about their work and products, we sampled street food, danced to local music, and had lunch. The touristy walled city area has it's charm, but it's pretty similar to most areas of cities where cruise ships stop. Look beyond to learn a lot more about this city and this country and this tour gives you such a glimpse. And the social justice aspects of this tour are powerful..

We met Paola and Daison and had the best tour of our lives. It was an intimate tour just two couples and we explored all of the market and some of Getsemani. Paola was our main guide because we do not speak much Spanish and she was exceptional. It was fun, engaging and just the best way to spend our third day in Colombia. We highly recommend this tour, especially with Paola. Thank you for a fantastic day. It’s been the highlight of our trip

This was an incredible tour showcasing what it means to live in Cartagena and how the locals do their shopping. Justina was our guide and did a fantastic job of hitting the highlights of the market. Barzuto is a very overwhelming place but Justina’s guidance made the whole experience very enjoyable. We finished off the tour eating where Anthony Bourdain did when he was in Cartagena which was delicious as you can imagine. All together it was a fantastic experience and gives you a truly local look at life in Cartagena.

Wonderful tour of the market In Cartagena the heartbeat that keeps the community together. . This is the real Colombia outside the walled city where the locals shop and eat. The tour guides were knowledgeable, kind and organized. Book it you won’t regret it.

Incluido:
• GuÃa bilingüe (Inglés, Alemán, Español)
• Traslado: Hotel - Mercado Bazurto - Hotel (en autobús o
taxi)
• Visita guiada por el mercado
• Degustación de frutas
No incluido:
• Seguro de viaje o accidente
• Bebidas
• Gastos personales
• Propinas
y varia según la cantidad de personas.
1 pax: $259.000 pcol x persona
2 pax: $160.000 pcol x persona.

I would like to know if they can pick you up at the pier. How long does it take from the pier to the area of the market. How long will we spend in the market.? We are seniors in our 80s and do a lot, but we would need to stop and rest, have a soda from time to time. Do you think this is too strenuous. We would like to spend about 2 hours in the market, see the highlights and return to ship. Is this possible:
Since you are a hotel, would you recommend a tour guide or company?
How much would this cost?

We were staying in Cartagena for several days and met our guide at the Volunteer Hostel and took a local bus there and a taxi back, as was our choice. However, I think Cartagena Insider Tours by FEM can arrange for private transport or a taxi both ways. You would need to contact them directly to find out but if there is a way for them to accommodate you from the pier, I think they certainly would! I'd say the walking tour itself was about 75% standing and walking but it was at a very leisurely pace with several stops for artist/workshop demonstrations as well as beverages, snacks, and lunch. We had a fantastic lunch in the market at Cecilia's stall, took ALOT of photos, and asked ALOT of questions throughout so I think our particular tour was longer than most. I think the standard is about 3 hours so if you only have two hours, you would probably have to eliminate lunch, but check with the tour company directly to confirm. If you can allow some extra time, I highly recommend the lunch stop. The local food was fantastic and Cecilia was featured on Anthony Bourdain's show. I hope it works out for you! It's great to know you are still able to travel and explore the world in your 80s. All best and enjoy your trip!

The best way is through Insider Tours....google them as I can’t post the link. They donate a portion of the money to an NGO.
Hi. I'd like to do this to but can't make the tour times. Is this your offered for an afternoon time?

This is a tour through the local market of Cartagena, exploring several stalls selling metal goods, posters, music, medicinal herbs and freshly killed beef and pork. It is very dirty and there is a lot of poverty apparent. The tour guide we had was excellent and the profits from the tour went towards education. My husband and I enjoy local connections and seeing local ways of life, we are traveling on our own sailboat, but this would be an eye opener for the average tourist. I think it would be an excellent educational experience for the youngsters, but it would depend on their maturity and interest. It is in sharp contrast to the tourist areas of Cartagena, and you get to interact with some local people and see day to day life. To get to the market, you walk with the guide through a typical Colombian neighborhood, which is also very interesting. You have a local lunch at the market, which is unlike what you would typically eat when traveling there, but you are are eating with all the local shoppers and stall owners.
Hopefully this helps make your decision, but the tour is worth the cost and very interesting. It just would depend on the interest levels of the youngsters. It is real life, not Disneyland.....
