One of Penang’s best-kept secrets, the southwestern part of the island which is called Balik Pulau offers bicycle rides for Rm7 each through quiet little towns as well as visits to an animal farm and a ‘bedak sejuk’ (traditional rice powder) factory.
One can set out to explore Balik Pulau on their own. With Google Maps as navigator, one can cycle along quaint villages, passing by a fishing village and making occasional stops to enjoy the beautiful scenery. A fantastic way to see the natural beauty and feel of fresh clean air.

Get collected from your hotel, drive to countryside and then pick a bike and then the ride begins. A couple of hours cycling in the countryside via small tracks through lovely nature and small towns while being well informed about malaysia as a country and its culture told by the great local guide. Really enjoyed the ride.

Eddie was amazing. He took us on a relaxing ride through the local country side pointing out features we would have never known. Eddie took us through a fishing village, had breakfast at a local shop, rode through palm plantations with explanations of the planting and growing process. He took us to a local farm housing different types of animals. We tasted the local ice cream. What a treat on a hot day. Eddie is very humble, knowledgable and a joy to have as a guide. My husband and I highly recommend him.

We went as a family of 3 and there was another family of 3 that signed up as well so it was a small group that day. We really had a fun and relaxing time. The ride was easy as it was mostly on flat ground and we made many stops in between. Eddy, our guide, was excellent. He’s very friendly and gave in-depth explanations about the different locations we stopped at. We rode through the plantations and fishing village and kampong, which was a nice experience indeed. We highly recommend this and will definitely go for it again when we’re next in Penang.

The driver was very punctual when picking us up from our hotel lobby. The bicycle ride through the palm tree/durian plantations, chinese/malay villages, fishing jetty and fish farm was very insightful and informative. Our tour guide was absolutely knowledgable and friendly. Overall a superb experience.

Tour was super nice!
Even if it's very early - it leaves you so much time to continue exploring things within the rest of a day.
Guide was brilliant! Super nice and easy to talk to guy.
Really worth it :)

An enjoyable morning cycling in the countryside of Penang Island.
The free-range host dairy farm we visited was most enjoyable.
It was a good experience to be shown and explained the subtle differences between the Malaysian and Chinese fishing villages.
Our tour host was very informative and was able to answer all questions raised.
Only negative aspect of the trip, my bicycle's gears kept slipping which became a frustration as I had to cycle the distance in the same gear.
In my opinion the cycles could be better maintained.

TAke care to understand the offer here. I should have read more carefully. From pick up to drop off did equate to half a day, and I understood that when booking, but the time spent cycling in the countryside was probably an hour. The focus seemed to be more on the stops than on the cycling.
The hotel pick up is great. The information made it clear that the time spent on transfers would be approximately 2hours. That’s fine if then enjoying rural cycling but the tour included a drawn out stop in a village. This was too long. It was interesting to see the jetty but the time in the temple was not so interesting. The drinks stop was pleasant enough but a disproportionate amount of our time was spent in this not so scenic village rather than enjoying the countryside. From the village, we moved to the goat farm. Ok, but it came again at the expense of enjoying the landscape on our bikes.
At times our surroundings were stunning but it felt we were taken away from that in order to see the village and the goat farm. I think the issue is that temples and jetties and goats have all been seen before, what we were hoping for was to experience the countryside. Soaking up the landscape, cycling past schools and mosques and seeing people enjoying themselves in the rivers was much more novel and exciting.
In terms of the commentary, we were given a lot of information from a strongly Chinese perspective. While this was quite interesting, getting a more neutral or a Malaysian perspective first would have been welcome and that could then have been overlaid with the Chinese angle.
Basically, I think the title needs a rethink. More accurately, it is a guided visit to a village and a goat farm…..on bikes.
Even better if there was a willingness to review the experience on offer and refocus on countryside cycling.

Eddy the guide has presented a wonderful area of rural and farmland in Malaysia.
The tour knowledge coupled with his humor accentuated the experience. I learned more about Penang whilst I have been travelling frequently to Penang in the past.
The warmth of a village and the local produce such as durians and rambutans are refreshing and rewarding.
The young adults and kids will love the petting farms. Bagus!

We would like to do this tour with our children ( 6 and 7 years). Is it possible? Do you have suitable bicycles for kids?
We have been living in Penang since 2 years. So we don’t need the transfer from our apartment. Could we get another price and a meeting point? We can drive by our own.
