Alternative Moscow: 2-Hour Walking Tour

Overview
Mystery and Moscow have always gone hand in hand, but uncovering the city’s hidden and often dark past is difficult without a guide. This evening tour leads you around tucked-away suburbs to discover historical stories and sights you’d probably miss if exploring alone. Delve into backstreets and squares, ride the vintage “Annushka” tram, hear tales of murder and criminality, and visit a retro pub for insight into life in Soviet times.
What to Expect
Greet your guide in Moscow’s Chistye Prudy district and set out to discover the city’s lesser-known and sometimes darker side.

See the monument to 19th-century playwright Alexander Griboyedov, and hear about his gruesome murder in Persia in 1829. Delve into side streets as your guide points out landmarks, and ride the famous “Annushka” tram, as you hear the rumors that surround it, to Kitay Gorod, Moscow’s oldest neighborhood.

Arrive in Khitrovka, a hub of criminality in the 1800s. Learn how thieves and convicts reigned here, and hear about the 17th-century count Jacob Bruce, rumored to have dabbled in witchcraft.

Visit Kilometer Zero, the point from where Russia’s distances are measured, and follow the tradition of tossing a coin here while making a wish. Uncover stories about the nearby buildings and end the tour by relaxing at the atmospheric Soviet-era Cheburechnaya Café over a Russian beer and snack (own expense).
