Kotaro was an excellent guide, taking us around Fushimi village and sharing the history, process, and intricacies of sake culture. We learned so much due to his detailed explanations. The sake tasting and food pairing was a highlight, as by the time we left, we had developed a real love of sake and an intrigue to learn and taste more. We left feeling confident about our sake preferences, and Kotaro even taught us how to read the labels in the grocery store and how to search for authentic sake establishments. I would highly recommend the Sake Experience to anyone interested in learning more or expanding your exploration with sake.

This is a highly enjoyable, informative, and local Kyoto experience. Kotaro was an incredible guide, having grown up in the Kyoto sake brewing district. He shares his knowledge for sake in a way that shows his clear passion for sharing his love with others. He makes learning easy and fun as you tour the sake museum inside one of the oldest sake breweries in Japan (close to 400 years old!) and then take the information you learn to apply it in a tasting in a comfortable space. I would recommend this tour to anyone coming to Kyoto, even if you don’t really like sake as you may discover there are certain types you do enjoy (like I did!)

Wow! Every superlative review mirrors my own experience. This is a pricey tour, and though I’m genetically thrifty I have to say it was really worth it. The only thing I would add is that while the food pairing information was fantastic, no other reviews mentioned the way Kitaro explained how the Japanese incorporate sake into the way they eat to increase their experience of each dish. As an international traveler who is both a foodie and knowledgeable about world wines and spirits I recommend this tour particularly because it is given at a fairly sophisticated level. I think if you’ve never been to a brewery or a winery or a distillery you might be able to learn about how alcoholic beverages are made on this tour, but if you already know a lot you will definitely not be bored because making wine out of rice is surprisingly complex. The three hours of the tour flew by because the guide had us mesmerized the entire time. My husband and I thought this was the best tour we’ve ever taken anywhere. And yes, pairing cream cheese and aged sake will blow your mind!

The tour included a visit to a brewery with our guide, Asahi, giving a very informed overview of how Sake is made. He was able to answer any questions we had and made it an easy process to understand. There were tastings of 3 Sakes in the brewery before moving on to a small restaurant to taste a further 7 Sakes combined with a paired food for each, with a detailed rundown of the different categories of Sake and why the food was picked for each. A really fun, informative tour and Asahi displayed an obvious passion for the subject. Excellent overall

I booked this tour during their slow season and the beginning stages of Covid-19 so I ended up being the only person on the tour. It was fantastic! My guide Kotaro Hashimoto was very kind and informative, I learned so much from him. He gave me a handy 'cheat sheet' to take with me for the rest of my time in Japan so help me buy Sake. He also took the time to send me his ppt on everything I learned from class. He taught me about 'mouth mixing' and opened my eyes to the hard work Sake takes, 10/10 would recommend!

Me and my partner were lucky enough to have Kotaro as our tour guide, who really helped made the guide wonderful. The guide is the most important part of the tour and Kotaro was passionate about Sake, knowledgable, and was a really good teacher! In Japan, sake is everywhere from groceries to high-end restaurants. This tour helps enhance the rest of your experience in Japan. The tour was thorough enough to go through the entire brewing process, different concepts in what makes one sake different from the other, and enough sake to develop your own preferences.

I recommend this tour and Kotaro to not just those who like Sake, but also those who want to learn more about an important aspect of Japanese culinary culture!

Kotaru was such an amazing and knowledgeable guide. Very friendly and approachable personality. The sake history and process were taught in an interactive and hands-on way, and I left with an appreciation for the variety of existing sake. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a classic, yet unique, experience in Kyoto. Would definitely attend the tour more than once as I heard from a friend that Kotaru teaches differently depending on the audience experience level.

So very glad I chose this tour. I had no knowledge of the creative process required for sake production. Kotaro painstakingly walked us through the entire “brewing” procedure and the differences among the many types of sake created with different rices, percentages of polishing, pasteurization or not, mold mixtures....... But then you get to taste the differences, first without any food and then later paired with different flavors which, of course, changes the tastings. A great tour/tasting experience.

My wife and I found a brochure in our hotel in Kyoto and this sake experience sounded interesting, when we got to the start location and meet Kotaro he was most welcoming to all the guests. During our experience he showed us how passionate/knowledgeable he was about sake which in turn made us want to learn more and more from him! The experience itself showed us the different types of sake and how great they can be with the right type of food pairing (and just by themself).
We will definitely be telling all our friends and family about this once we are back home!

Wow! What an incredible time we had! If you’re interested in learning about Japanese Sake or to even taste a variety (including aged sake), then this experience is definitely for you.
Kotaro taught us the different types of Japanese Sake and its catergories. The content Kotaro delivered were both clear and precise. He did very well in answering our questions and really tailored the experience to us.
Kotaro, thank you so much for such a magnificent experience on Christmas Day.
