- brookel7200 contributionsGreat day touring KyotoWe had an amazing day with our tour guide Cas. This tour covers so much ground in just one day. Not only did we get to see the main attractions, I personally enjoyed getting the opportunity to see a glimpse of the less touristy areas, from the locals fishing in the river to the kindergartens playing at recess.Written 13 October 2024
- Connector446703219140 contributionsA full bike tour of Kyoto with a great guide.Thoroughly enjoyable guided tour by Peter. Covered a lot of ground from bamboo forests, backstreets to shrines and temples. Superbly curated and organised, and some interesting background and history to modern day Kyoto. A great way to explore the city.Written 13 October 2024
- zoewB979MK0 contributionsBest day of my tripEasily the best day of my trip so far. Great communication before booking, fabulous, knowledgeable guide, saw all the sites without the stress of public transport, going by bike meant we could see so much more and it was great fun. We got to learn about the places we visited but also about Japanese culture. I would 100% recommendWritten 8 October 2024
- cirelym0 contributionsNice tour with great views and visitsVery nice tour, Yuki is an amazing guide and he speaks very good English. The tour takes you to places that aren’t known for tourist and that makes you live better the Japanese culture. Recommended.Written 7 October 2024
- larissatC2799PN0 contributionsDefinitely a must! This was our favorite adventure in Kyoto! We saw more in this tour than our several days before. Yuki, our guide, was patient, knowledgeable and awesome! He taught us more in-depth on the history and culture of Japan while wandering streets and temples we never would have seen. I highly recommend this tour and thoroughly appreciated Yuki!Written 5 October 2024
- MichelleM1234670 contributionsA highlight of our holidayThanks for a fantastic tour Ray. Our family of 4 (2 adult children) loved touring with Ray. We did the 8 hour bike tour with Ray and saw all the highlights of Kyoto. Ray is a great communicator and we learned so much and had fun too! This was one of the best tours/experiences of our trip through Japan. We could have made it easier by hiring e-bikes but we were very proud of ourselves at the end having covered approx 47 kms. No better way to see Kyoto. Thanks again Ray. The McGregor Family.Written 2 October 2024
- mattportner0 contributionsHighly recommended tour!!Highly recommend this bike tour! We saw the top spots in Kyoto and had a great time biking around the city with our amazing guide, Cass!Written 2 October 2024
- 175nestord0 contributionsTerrific Tour!Wow! I had a day and a half to spend in Kyoto, before a business trip to Tokyo, and a friend had recommended the Kyoto Bike Tour as a great way to see the city. It did not disappoint! Our guide - Cass - was friendly and knowledgeable and we covered a great deal of ground but in a comfortable way. The temples, shrines, bridges, neighborhoods, and other sites (way more than the advertised "five top highlights") were all fascinating. One tip - they offered us the chance to upgrade to e-bikes and by hour five or six, and especially on some of the big hills, I was glad to have taken them up on it.Written 30 September 2024
- T7020AIemilyl0 contributionsFabulous way to start in KyotoThis bike tour was, without a doubt, one of the best ways to see Kyoto. Gus was an exceptional guide. He was able to answer any question our group threw at him and adapted the day according to our needs and experience. Not only did we visit some of Kyoto’s most iconic places, but we followed stunning back routes that we never would have found on our own. These were almost as much of a treat as the destinations. I’m not particularly fit and the day was hot, so decided to go for an e-bike which made the day a really pleasurable experience. My teenage kids did the ride just fine on normal bikes. Gus also made sure we had plenty of water all day. The bikes also have decent sized front pouches, so if you can pack light you can avoid bringing along a backpack. Thanks so much Gus!Written 29 September 2024
- Annie P0 contributionsFantastic bike tour of Kyoto!Kyoto is a huge city and the bike tour was an excellent way of seeing all the sights and many more. Cass was our fantastic tour guide who led the itinerary to include cycle routes of the outskirts where we briefly stopped outside of the Nintendo development centre and the opportunity to witness everyday Japanese life cycling through the back streets. Me and my sister really enjoyed learning the history of each destination and Cass is very knowledgeable and has great passion which was evident.Written 29 September 2024
- hollyp1490 contributionsGreat way to see all the sights of KyotoReally fun tour. Lasted all day and we saw so many sights. Cass was really informative and told us a lot of information not displayed at the sights. Also good communication over WhatsApp. We kept at a good pace, so everyone kept up. It was a very active day and we were very tired. The included Udon lunch was in a local restaurant we wouldn’t normally have gone in, but the food was delicious and much needed carbs for a busy day.Written 29 September 2024
- jot175520 contributionsDisappointing- bikes were great, knowledge was sketchyThis tour was an expensive disappointment. Our guide appeared to be in a hurry and whizzed past everything, except the 5 highlights (Fushimi Inari Taisha , Kinkaku-ji, Kiyomizu-dera, bamboo forest & Gion). I appreciate that there was a lot of mileage to cover, but there were no opportunities to take photos of everyday Kyoto, even after I asked for occasional photo stops. Our guide’s group management and communication was poor and over the course of the day, every family group (of the three families in our group of seven individuals) got left behind at least once. My primary disappointment was our guide’s apparent lack of knowledge. I don’t expect a guide to know everything but I do expect an open and honest reply when he’s unsure of something. Instead, he told me that only 10% of school students go onto university (blatantly incorrect) and that 70% of the population was 75 years and older (also incorrect). His knowledge of the 5highlights appeared to be superficial (either that or he didn’t communicate it well). For example, When I asked for dates relating to the Hamaguri Gate, he replied “1864-ish”. Ish??!! On the plus side, the e-bikes were good quality and well maintained, and the full day tour (8:30-5:30) covered all 5 highlights (Fushimi Inari Taisha , Kinkaku-ji, Kiyomizu-dera, bamboo forest & Gion). The lunch was also good. In summary, if your objective is to only see the 5highlights in one day, then this is a good tour option. If you want more in-depth knowledge of Japanese history and modern Japan, don’t select this guide.Written 29 September 2024
- susancO5829SP0 contributionsA wonderful bike tour! Our family of 5 (kids ages 11-16 years) did the Kyoto Bike Tour- Bamboo Forest and I cannot say enough great things about it! When in Kyoto, definitely work this into your itinerary! Ray was our guide and he was fantastic- very knowledgeable and did all the extra things that made it a truly memorable time! We all had a great time!Written 29 September 2024
- Cory C0 contributionsSuch a great time with Yuki!!We had a blast with our guide, Yuki, on the afternoon tour of Arashiyama! This was such an amazing way to see all the sites and highly recommend this company. Yuki was professional, knowledgeable and made us feel so comfortable and at ease that we were well taken care of. It was a very hot and humid day and he had some great tactics to help us get through the heat to keep our energy up and not get too fatigued. There was so much to see! His English was perfect, even though he is a native to Japan and despite his young age, he really knows a ton about the culture and history of Japan. He even taught us how to do a proper prayer at the various temples and shrines we visited. Do not miss this tour if you’re in the area!Written 24 September 2024
- MaryDoesTravel0 contributionsAmazing tourWe had the most amazing experience on this tour! Cass was a great tour guide giving us a lot of information about Japan, its history and culture, as well as making sure we were well cared for. The tour allowed us to see parts of Kyoto that you wouldn’t normally see in tourists areas as well as seeing a lot of the famous areas. I would 10000% recommend this tour for anyone adventurous (about 25 miles of biking including a steep hill) and wanting to take a deeper dive into Japanese cultureWritten 23 September 2024

Ray is such a lovely, gentle and instantly likeable guy who clearly has a pretty deep knowledge of Japanese and Kyoto history and is very skilled at imparting it through sharing interesting facts and entertaining stories. We spent 4 hours together cycling through beautiful landscapes and stopping off at various locations, and the time just flew by. The bikes are very nice and easy to ride and Ray is super attentive. Cannot recommend this tour highly enough, especially if you want to almost completely avoid the crowds by doing the 'early bird' morning tour. Just book this one folks - you will not be disappointed.

Time sure did fly by! It is only reflective on how easygoing and down to earth you are which may for a memorable tour! Many thanks for the kind words and the awesome time together. It was a real joy showing you around and we sure did get the best of the early bird without the crowds. I look forward to crossing paths again!

We weren't really sure what to expect with the bike tour, but I can say with complete certainty that we were THRILLED with our experience. Peter was incredibly friendly and informative and gave us a lot of interesting tidbits of information along our tour. He also took us to places that were not swarming with tourists (the morning time slot may have helped a bit, but we were still able to see cherry blossoms with literally no one else but our group around). The equipment was easy to use (bikes, helmets, water all provided). We also had entrance to the Zen Gardens which were beautiful. If you're looking to do something a little active and off the beaten city path, I definitely recommend booking the early bird bike tour. Peter also gave us the inside scoop on a local Japanese Curry spot that was SO TASTY. It was the perfect way to end the tour!

This bike tour was a amazing. Solid bikes, low stress, good pace, safe, fun . . . it really ticked ll the boxes for a great experience. Peter is very knowledgeable about the local history and culture. Peter also did a great job of helping the group feel at ease and navigate the cultural expectations the Japanese have for those visiting their historical sites. A bike tour like this is really the only way to see a city like Kyoto and Peter delivered a great one. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to be a bit active, see some great sites and learn a bit about Kyoto and Japan.

In our short visit to Osaka and Kyoto, this tour was the highlight! My husband and I found Ray to be an amazing guide - very knowledgeable in Japanese language, culture, and tradition. He answered so many questions and helped us have a deeper understanding of Kyoto’s and Japan’s history.
The tour was amazing! The early bird route to the Bamboo Forest was perfect as we definitely beat the crowds. The bikes were also very well kept and easy to adjust to, which is always a concern in the back of my mind. Ray also took a bunch of photos for us and of us, so we could focused almost exclusively on enjoying the sights!
My husband and I loved the tour so much that I expect we’ll be back for a full-day tour within a few months, if our vacation allows. Seriously, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this tour to anyone capable of riding a bike!

This was a great tour! I highly recommend if you are in Kyoto... Not only did Ray do an amazing and thoughtful job explaining everything we saw on the tour, but he also gave great insight to the culture and history of Japan in general. I would recommend doing this as one of the first things you do when you get to Kyoto as the context Ray gave provided a great knowledge base for me to continue exploring the city. Ray's passion for and knowledge about Japan really shown through in this tour and I learned so much from him. A do not miss if you are in Kyoto!

This was the most epic, amazing, and informative tour I have ever been on! Not only did we bike throughout the entire city, allowing us to see so many things we otherwise wouldn’t have, but we learned about each destination. Ray was kind, skillful, watchful, and fun! He clearly loves what he does and has so much passion to share it with others. I have never been on a tour that felt so inviting and free! I would highly recommend doing this no matter what physical level you’re at. Although we biked from 9am to 6:30- I never felt drained or tired. This made me see Kyoto with fresh and curios eyes. If there were more stars, I would use them all. Hope to see you again, Ray!

I highly recommend to join the early bird Arishiyama tour with Kyoto bike tour, as you can visit some key places before the crowd. I really enjoyed cycling in the country side and stopping at some less touristic crowd. Thank you so much to Peter and Rob for the time spent with them.

We started our Kyoto vacation early with the Arashiyma bike tour. It was amazing! We had our 3 and 1 year olds with us and they had a great time as well. The equipment was great and the kids were very safe. They loved being taken around on the bikes.
The tour was a good mix of nature, temples/shrines, history and townscapes. Our guide, Ray made everything very easy and smooth. Even when our kids got fussy at times (or tried throwing rocks into zen gardens (smh)) he was kind and positive. We loved his recommended itinerary, which took us away from the more crowded areas.
The autumn leaves on the mountains and gardens were beautiful. Having lived in Japan 2 years we’ve seen many temples, but these were some of the best because of the mix of art, nature and ambiance.
Highly recommend this tour, especially if it’s your first time in the area or Japan.

This was the best tour my husband and I did in Japan. The tour guide, Peter, was lovely and extremely knowledgeable, having lived in Japan for over 25 years. As English speakers, he was able to clearly explain interesting facts and history about Kyoto and Arashiyama. We opted for the early bird Arashiyama bamboo forest tour and it went for approx. 3 hours and in that time we covered a lot of ground, visiting the bamboo forest, several temples, the famous bridge, the main street in town and more. Peter captured fantastic photos of each individual group throughout the tour at each stop, he also took some great group photos that I have attached here.
I couldn’t recommend this tour more highly! Great value for money.

I highly recommend doing this bike tour when you're in Kyoto! It was such a fun way to explore the area and our guide Ray was wonderful. He taught us so much about everything that we saw and he took us to a few places that we never would have found on our own. He even took photos throughout the tour and was able to get so many nice family photos of us. Our kids are 1 and 4 and they enjoyed riding around on the bikes as much as we did. I was so thankful that Kyoto Bike Tour offers child seats and child helmets so that we were able to do this as a family. It was definitely one of the most memorable parts of our trip!
