About
The Shinsekai district is unique. Join us on a foodie adventure and travel back in time to this local entertainment district for a taste of vintage Osaka! Though people visit from across Japan and around the world, this area is still very much a local spot with many shops, restaurants and gaming parlors catering to the everyday laborers who live nearby. Take a stroll with our local expert and discover hidden gems and learn more about the colorful past history of Shinsekai through the years. You will get the chance to try different seasonal and local dishes at 5 different stops. Each item has a long history in the Osaka area. Shinsekai evokes the SHOWA era in Japan which was full of optimism, growth and a communal sense of building a better future together. There is a lot of romance and nostalgia surrounding this period in modern Japanese history. This vintage neighborhood brings back all the charm of 1910 through the 1960’s, a boom period for Osaka City.

Great morning with Ike
Oct 2021
My wife and I loved our food tour with Ike. He was an incredibly friendly and knowledgeable tour guide, and he gave us a lot of background information about the food we were eating and the history of Shinsekai. He also shared his knowledge about Osaka, Buddhism and Shintoism. We definitely got our money's worth, and we were completely full by the end of it. I highly recommend doing this tour, and book with Ike if you can!

Arigato Japan food tours

We booked a place on an Osaka food tour for 3 hours, it was our 5th day in Japan & we had struggled with understanding the types of restaurants and what to order once inside.
We should have done this tour on our 1st night in Japan!!!
Ike, our guide, was excellent, spoke good English, very knowledgeable.
He took us to a number of eating places in the quieter area of Shinsekai, rather than the busier Dotonbori district. We expected to be joining a group tour of up to 10 people, however only 2 of us had booked for the evening, which allowed us to ask any amount of questions.
Really enjoyed this tour & recommend you include it in the early part of a visit to Japan.
I think this company also do tours in Tokyo and Kyoto.

It was great!

A few days ago, I went on a tour of the Shinsekai area of Osaka. My tour guide, Yoko, was really knowledgeable and fun to listen to. She was very kind, teaching me different things about the Japanese language since I've been studying it. The area at night was such a joy to see, with all its bright lights and the great scents of food from each restaurant. Sushi, nikujaga, manju, takoyaki, fruit smoothies, it was all so good! Try it if you get the chance!

Excellent experience. Great food!

This was really one of the biggest highlights of our trip. I travelled with my two kids (11 and 13 yrs) who cannot stop talking about it.

The guide was both knowledgeable, and friendly and went out of her way to make sure we learned both about the food, culture and history.

We also appreciated the information we were given in advance. It was really clear and easy to understand :-)

Best Ever!
Sep 2019 • Couples
We did the evening (4:45pm) tour and it was great! The main reason my husband and I loved it was because of our guide, Masaki.

He was so friendly and knowledgable, and it felt like we were being guided by a friend.

It was wonderful spending time with a local and learning more about the Japanese culture.

If you book this tour make sure you ask for Masaki!

YAY! that is such a kind and wonderful review. We will be sure to tell Masaki that he had a home run here. <3 We work hard to train all our guides so hopefully even if Masaki is not the guide our guests end the tour with new friends and lots of local knowledge. Thank you again.

Day vs Night....go for night!
Aug 2019
Our Osaka Retro Tour was a day tour due to our schedule, maybe the night tour would have been better. The area was a visual feast but the tour itself was lacking. The food was nothing special or even particularly interesting. Having read a lot about Osaka being the heart of the food scene in Japan it was very disappointing.

Friends have taken food tours and evening bar tours in Tokyo and Osaka with Arigato and loved them. Maybe our tour was just an off day, which everyone has from time to time.

Sorry this was not a good fit for you. We try our best to offer lots of times and different patterns for different guests. Were you able to visit the knife shop? Try the pressed sushi? If you don't mind what food would you have been more interested to experience as we are always looking for feedback and open to improvements all the time. This tour has been very popular lately so we want to make sure we are always checking on all the parts of our tours. Did the guide explain the history of the area and local stories? Thanks in advance for any more details if you prefer you can write us at info@arigatojapan.co.jp

At the end of a long day we were quite tired and wishing we had not booked the tour.

As it turned out it was a highlight of our holiday.

The guide was wonderful and a real source of fun and information. We enjoyed everthing from old style patchinko, to listening to French jazz as we made our own takoyaki, Osaka style sushi and Fried food Osaka style. All in all we visited about 8 different locations finishing up in an exotict tea and coffee shop.

What a night truly fantastic.

Fun food tour in Osaka
We had a great time on our retro street food tour in Osaka with Taiga. We went to some interesting places that we wouldn’t have thought to go to ourselves, including a knife shop. We were encouraged to try some foods we might not have had the confidence to pick which were all very tasty and the best part was having a go at making Takoyaki octopus dumplings ourselves! We were definitely full up by the end of the tour and more knowledgeable about the local food and area.

Delightful and hearty food/culture tour
Apr 2019 • Friends
We enjoyed a well-crafted tour that afforded a thorough exploration of Osaka's "amusement park-cum-retro restaurant quarter," Shinsekai. Yuko Mitsuishi's profound knowledge, humour, and adaptability made us feel at ease and well looked-after throughout. Our tour not only included culinary delights ranging from cakes and takoyaki to skewers and smoothies, but also encompassed a glimpse into knife-making, Osaka's 20th century history, and pinball--a truly well-rounded trip. I could wholeheartedly recommend this itinerary to anyone passing through Osaka in search of "a little of everything".

We had a really great time with Ibu
Apr 2019 • Couples
We toured Shinsekai with Ibu during this year's extra-long Golden Week, so many of the cafes he was used to were packed with lines out the door. He took it in stride and found other options, all fun and tasty, and was a great conversation partner during the meals and while we waited. After we talked about my interests he also found time to take us to a nearby knife store and helped translate the info there. Great food, great conversation, plenty of knowledge about the area, just a really good time. Definitely recommended.

YAY, so glad you enjoyed your tour with Ibu in Shinsekai. Such a fun retro area, Golden week can be challenging we are happy to hear he handled the crowds well and that you had a great time. Hopefully you can come visit again and join us for another tour in Tokyo, Kyoto, (more in Osaka) or in our newest destination in Hiroshima. Happy Travels!
