What to expect
  • Your whale watching adventure begins with a narrated transfer from the pier to Auke Bay. There your captain and onboard naturalist will welcome you aboard the North Star, our state of the art 48-passenger jet boat custom designed for Juneau whale watching, with large windows and an outside viewing deck. On clear days you'll have a beautiful view of the Mendenhall Glacier as your sightseeing vessel departs the dock. Juneau has a healthy humpback whale population with some 65 whales returning each season to feed in the nutrient-rich waters, and your captain is excellent at locating them. In fact, whale sightings are guaranteed! If a whale is not spotted during your cruise we'll refund you $100 ($50 for children). Your captain will let you know when whales are spotted, but it's more likely you'll first be alerted by the collective chorus of "Oohhs!" and "Ahhs!" from your fellow adventurers as they witness a giant humpback suddenly breach.

Hilight of our trip
Bridget is a recent marine biologist graduate. Fountain of information. Tom who does this excursion 3x a day acts as excited as if he is seeing his first whale ever. Fantastic tour. Others went onto the salmon bake. We were the only 2 in the van. Driver gave us the option of being dropped off at the designated place or a ride back to the ship. Professional courtesy.

Wow!!!
Whale watching with Captain Tom & Sara Ryan was fantastic!
The boat was comfortable with room outside to take the beautiful straits.
Sara gave us a wonderful tour of the islands and the local whale activity.
The sightings were numerous and we were treated to a high in the sky breach by a baby humpback. Captain Tom & Sara

AMAZING Whale Watch! Fantastic Crew!
Jul 2019 • Couples
Whales are a passion of mine. I like to visit them in Juneau in the summer, and see the same whales off of Maui in the winter. We hit gold with the crew of Alaska Travel Adventures. Captain Alex and Naturalist Christine were great. He stayed away from packs of whale watching boat, stated how counter that is to letting the animals move freely. He instead found a pod of HUGE orcas, stopped the boat, and let them come to us... and boy, they did! All over us! Under the boat! Back at us again! What a show! Then, they spotted an active Humpback putting on a show of her own... and got us as close as possible without disturbing the whale. If you care about whales, protecting them while getting close enough to commune with them - this tour is a great choice.

Perfect Alaska Experience!
Jul 2019 • Couples
I went on a whale watching crew this past weekend with these guys and it was AWESOME! Captain Alex was knowledgeable and personable, and Brigid knew anything you needed to know about the whales. We saw 6-7 whales including a mama/baby combo and Brigid was even able to tell us specific info on some of the whales she recognized... HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Saw a lot of whales
Jun 2019 • Couples
We saw an unbelievable number of Orca/ Killer Whales, including a very large pod of them. Some were fairly close too. These whales are fun to watch as they don't stay under water very long compared to other whales. We did see several humpback whales also, though not as many or as close as we expected. We did see some tales as they dove. The staff were all very friendly and were safety conscious.

3.5 hours, drink your coffee, start the clock
Jun 2019 • Couples
if in your 3.5 hours you include:
-the 20 minute ride from the terminal,
-the 15 minutes waiting for the others to arrive
-the 10 minutes it took to get over and on to the boat,
-the tour (dock to dock),
-the 10 minutes to get off the boat and
-the 20 minutes to get back to the terminal,
then it was close to 3.5 hours.

If you think that you are getting and additional 1.5 hours for the extra money over the tours that honestly up front tell you that you are going to be watching whales (dock to dock) for 2 hours, then you may want to skip this disappointment.

Our captain seemed to be of the mind that, once we had seen enough whales that there was no threat to the guarantee of a refund deposit for non-sighting, he was golden.

The young woman (Christine, I think) who was our naturalist was as cute and lively as could be.

But....3.5 half hours? not so much.

As a note: if you sign up for the combined Mendenhall Glacier tour variety(wish we had, but we wanted the extra time watching whales), you can always leave the tour at the glacier and get back to Juneau via public transportation. this could buy you a lot of additional time to look around near the glacier. check public transportation schedules to make sure you can get back in time for your cruise ship departure.

Sorry, you were disappointed. All tours that state dock to dock means from the cruise docks and back. None of our literature says you will spend 3.5 hours on the water. Dale E Smith Director of Sales & Marketing

Whale watching
May 2019
Just back from our Alaskan cruise and this trip enable us to see whales for the first time after trying 3 times before in other parts of the world with no guarantee of your money back not like this trip.
Captain Alex and Sara the marine adviser gave us an excellent outing and they were a great team together. We saw a mother with a calf and three other whales due to them moving around in the bay.
