What to expect
  • It’s an early start! You will be collected from your accommodation venue. This only applies to pick-up’s and drop-off’s in Durban City, feel free to contact us if you are unsure as to whether your pick-up location is covered. Should your pick-up location not be covered, we will still collect you, however, there may be an additional charge dependent on where you are based. From time of pick-up, it is approximately a 2.5-hour drive to Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve. During transit, your guide will share a bit of history with you and you are encouraged to ask questions to reap the full benefit of the safari. Once you have reached your destination, Hluhluwe Imfolozi, your guide will attend to the necessary entry requirements into the park after which you will take a slow Game drive towards Hilltop Camp. Your guide will educate you on the history of the area as well as conduct a 4-hour game drive in a closed air-conditioned vehicle so you can experience the amazing wildlife that Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve has to offer in comfort. Have your cameras ready! Dependent on time, we shall stop Hilltop Camp where you will have the opportunity to stretch your legs. The views from the terrace will leave no doubt in your mind that the name “Hilltop” has been aptly chosen. The overall safari experience was very organized! Thank you to Sibo and Tim for having great communication from booking to the excursion. We enjoyed and will definitely be booking more tours in the future!

We opted for the three day tour for a better chance of seeing the wildlife and were not disappointed. The stop en route to the cheetah sanctuary was a wonderful experience To my astonishment we were able to go inside the cat pens and get to within a few feet of the animals.
On arrival at Hluhluwe itself our driver/guide Sibo took us on a game drive and a further two over the following days. He is a wealth of knowledge and took excellent care of us.

Our Safari Guide, Sibo, was excellent. He has in depth knowledge of the African animals and Bush. We saw a huge bull elephant having a bath about 20 metres from our car. Took heaps of photos of zebras, giraffes, impalas, monkeys, white & black Rhinos, warthogs etc. Would definitely recommend Tim Brown Tours.

The trip to Hluhlwe Imfolozi is something that I will cherish for the rest of my life. The encouters with the magnificent animals were breathtaking. It was astonishing how calm these animals were when considering that we were only a few meters away from them. The tour guide also supplied us with a profound knowledge of the animals' behavior and made the trip even more enjoyable for me and my friends. During the tour we met White Rhinos, Giraffes, Elephants, Warthogs, Baboons, Warthogs, Impalas, Nyalas, Waterbucks, Zazu from Lion King and Buffaloes. I would also like to recommend the lunch that can be included as it was savory and delicious! I will definitively go again if I am ever in Durban again.

We did this off the oceania trip docked in Richards bay and stayed at hilltop lodge. While the safari was very well organized we didn’t get to see any cats on this trip. There is a limited amount of lions here at this reserve. Very pretty hills and lush tropical vegetation. Less open dry prairies like other safaris. Tim browns group picked us up New Year’s Day and dropped us off at the ship in Durban so everything was fine in getting us back on the ship. hilltop lodge is at a premium location in the park but if you can stay at the more luxury lodges try to do that. Hilltop is not a 3 or 4 star place. Check all the floors before you sleep for critters if you do stay here.
Sibo was our guide and spoke very good English and was very helpful in every way. The night Jeep guides are first rate here too. Some are employed at hilltop.

Our safari in Hluhuwe was the best start to my groups week-long stay in South Africa. Tim and his tour guides are so knowledgable about all of the wildlif and South African culture. We saw 4/5 of the Big 5 all thanks to our great tour guide. Safari with Tim Brown is something you cannot skip if you are making the trip to South Africa. I would recommend it to anyone, and it is an experience I would definitely do again if I ever return to the beautiful country.

One of the best wildlife experiences we've ever had! We went as a family of 3 with a 10-month old baby. Chose to privatise the Safari as we definitely didn't want to ruin someone else's experience if our daughter was fussy and crying. Tim Brown himself was our guide, and we couldn't have asked for a better one. He made the whole experience of a 3-day long safari stress-free, and definitely knew his stuff. The moment I knew that paying for a guide like Tim was more than worth it was the start of the second day, when a pride of lions were spotted. 10 cars were jostling to get the best position to see the pride, and Tim beats all of them to get us as close as we wanted to get to 5 Lions! (see photos).

I highly recommend Tim Brown!

We saw 3 of the big 5 - no cats! Our guide did try very hard and was in constant communication with other guides to try to find out information.

We got really up and personal with buffalo's and elephants as well as impala and Zebra.

Only fair to point out that you do need to be patient it is a needle in a haystack as the park is huge and the animals don't really want to be found!

Our driver was on time and knowledgeable really knowing the park well.

Dear Gavin Thank you for your review. Grateful you enjoyed the tour with us. Pity you didn't have luck with the cats, it is one of those things as they are Nocturnal. We do always try our very best to make it happen though. :-) Very true patience is key when looking for wild animals that are not caged in a Zoo like setting. That is the beauty of a Safari. We look forward to your return for those cats. Best wishes Tim
