GREAT Food Tour in Napa--History included!
Jul 2018 • Friends
I and a group of friends from the San Francisco Peninsula went to Napa specifically to take this tour for fun. And we had the BEST time. We met at the Oxbow Market (A perfect place as there was a coffee shop and a lot of other shops to visit while we waited for the tour). We met our guide who led us to an outdoor seating area behind the C-Casa shop where we were entertained with Napa history stories gratis Mary (our WONDERFUL guide) and ate positively the BEST breakfast taco I have ever eaten (ok – it was the first breakfast taco I have ever eaten, but I have eaten a LOT of tacos in California and in Mexico and this was up there in the number 1 or 2 spot – have to give room for Birria tacos in Puerto Vallarta – which we found on a FOOD TOUR there, by the way!) So … we go to either a food tour or a cooking class everywhere we travel and we travel a lot. And I really enjoyed this tour. After a bit of history on the area and that great taco, we sampled some cheeses from the markets premier cheese shop (and TRUE – given other reviews – there was no wine and it was served at picnic tables in the back as it is not a cheese restaurant – it is a cheese shop!) We sampled 5 or 6 cheeses and they were really, really good. We took notes and loved them all. We went to the Fatted Cow Charcuterie to sample their dried meets and sausages…yes…fabulous! From there we took a walking tour of Napa and stopped to see a lot of historical sites and hear a lot of the “special events” and “special personalities” from the area from our super guide, Mary! Ask about the last hanging in California, the 911 memorial, the Oxbow…the AMAZING murals about the history of Napa…you will not be disappointed! If you are disappointed…I can’t imagine where you got your expectations! We went to the most amazing Olive Oil company (Napa Valley Olive Company – I think- I have experienced. There must have been 100 oils infused with WONDERFUL things and vinegars as well. Yes – we all bought something there! Then there was Tarla –Mediterranean – not sure if everyone gets the same tour – but this place was absolutely the best in terms of (A) they make their own IPA beer and I LOVE IPA beers, and (B) the FOOD…the hummus with pita was to die for and we had, literally a 4-course meal of meatballs and vegetable cakes and way too much food and loved every bite! AND THEN…the chocolate! THE SWEET SHOP…this amazing candy maker served up 6 different chocolate candies with 5 different wines. How I made it home, I do not know. This was an amazing experience in taste! The LEMON Chocolate, the TRUFFLES, and all of it…hard to resist. So – if you agree with me the this is a good Gourmet Tour – go for it! If you expect Champaign at every stop – don’t go! It’s about Napa and Napa’s foods, history and people. We all LOVED it!

What has happened here?
Sep 2017 • Friends
The gourmet walks I have enjoyed have been full of nice talking, stories and interest in the attending people besides the carefully chosen dishes. We felt that our guide had lost her appetite in the task she was supposed to handle with enthusiasm. A tour guide must take control and be prepared.

Servings started well, though at the second stop for cheese without anything to drink in the middle of wine area was not gourmet. The stop called lunch was missing the main course and the cooking was not in balance.

Tours delight was the chocolatier, the presentation was the best of all stops.

The tour ended with wine tasting. I have never earlier been in a tasting were the host doesn't share knowledge of the wine yard and wine making. The wine was no good, except the last red.

I am afraid that I cannot recommend this event to anyone. Napa is nice little town and definitely worth a stop. Go to Oxbow Public Market for the gourmet and enjoy!

Great intro to downtown Napa
Jun 2016
Mary gave us a great tour with lots of yummy food along the way. We started at Oxbow where we tasted 3 places, then walked to several other places including olive oil, chocolate, Mediterranean food, and finally a wine room. Great info and history shared along the way. Highly recommended!

A wonderful tour and well worth the time and money!

Loved this tour, would do it again! The food was delicious and the tour guide fun. Since we were a group of 5, we had our own tour and that was great. We knew some of the places on the tour, but that was fine as we learned new things to eat at each place.

Things I liked: great way to see downtown Napa. Food was good.

Things I disliked: tour guide wasn't very knowledgable and seemed disinterested in our group. Felt like it was pricey for what we got.

Overall, I would not recommend and would have rather have spent my money at an actual restaurant or at a winery. The write up online makes it seem much better than it actually is. Just wasn't what we expected after taking other food tours before.

7 Stop Tasting Tour
May 2014 • Couples
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the Gourmet Walks Napa Tour. We have taken food tours in other cities with the majority being in Chicago. This Gourmet Tour offered 7 stops and that is more than any stops that we have ever been offered with the others. Our guide, Swan met us at Oxbow Market and we started there with a delicious fresh breakfast taco from C Casa. The chef had trained with Rick Ballas (Frontera Grill-Chicago chef/owner). The farm to table ingredients were quite evident and I can see why this was several people's favorite stop on the tour. Our 2nd stop was at the Oxbow Cheese Merchant there in the Market also. The employee was very pleasant and informative as we tasted 4 pairs of cheeses and compared those in each pairing. Swan was very friendly and involved each of us in conversation during the walk and tasting stops. Our 3rd stop was at The Fatted Calf for meat tasting. The butcher brought several small tastes of different meats with some French type pickles. And salami was one of the meats offered. The 4th stop was over the bridge to a beer tasting at The Fish Story on Main Street along the Waterfront. I am not a beer drinker but enjoyed the sampling. My husband was better at judging the beers. We were also served ahi tartar which was very good and fresh tasting. Next we walked over to Lucero on First Street for our 5th stop to taste olive oils and balsamic vinegar. We both really enjoyed this shop. We had never actually sipped oils & vinegar. Very interesting and tasty! Our 6th stop was at Annette's C?hocolate Factory. This stop was so fun. We were able to sample chocolates, brittles and ice cream. Fun little place where we actually saw the mixing kitchen. Our last and 7th stop was back on Main Street to Vintner's Collective. We could sample 4-5 wines at our leisure at this nice shop which carried numerous area vineyards' wines. Swan did leave us here as you might have read in other reviews. It didn't bother us because we wanted to walk around town and do a little shopping on our own and it didn't seem to bother the other two couples in our Gourmet Walk group either. We would definitely recommend this tour to others. We certainly enjoyed it!

Not what we had hoped...
We have been on several food tours and this was our least favorite. The portions were small for $75 per person. The best taste was the breakfast taco, it was excellent, and it went downhill from there. You get 4 bites of cheese with no crackers served on a paper napkin, 4 small samples of meat, deep fried vegetables and warm beer and sipping olive oil out of plastic cups which was very strange. The chocolate/ice cream shop stop was good. Final stop at a tasting room where the guide leaves you had very overpriced wine. Previous tours in New York and Seattle offered much bigger portions. We are not asking for enormous amounts of food but enough to feel like you are getting your $'s worth. Our guide was nice but not very attentive.

This was a fun way to see Napa Valley. We hit a few the the restaurants and food stores. Loved everything! We chose this tour since we had teens with us - but what was nice it wasn't just food - we had a couple of wine and beer drinks along the way. It was fun eating our way around Napa.

Wonderful tour... don't miss!

A VERY informative and educational tour featuring a nice variety of foods with an expert at each stop to tell us about what we were tasting. Our tour guide was full of interesting information, as well. There was plenty of food for this to serve as your lunch! The final stop, The Vintner's Collective, was a wonderful tasting room sampling some of the best wines we tasted on the trip. Save some time after your tour to go back to the Oxbow Market. You'll want to visit all the food vendors there!

Napa Valley Culinary Walking Tour
Sep 2013 • Couples
After learning about this online and reading the description, we we quick to sign up. The tour cost $70 per person, but that would include food tasting, meeting of the chefs and drinking wine at the food stops. Well........the write up was better than reality. The tour guide was the best, but as for what cost us $70 per person was hard to swallow. I by far would have spent the same amount on eating at one of the wonderful restaurants that Napa offers and I probably would still have some money left over. I felt I was taken.......would never recommend this tour, simply too costly for what you really get, the food portions were ridiculous had we not bring our own water to wash them down. And who just can eat 4 samples of gourmet cheese on a paper napkin. Did not give a hand out of the of names so I could have a reference. JUST BAD!!
