We visited Colorado this weekend and were met with single digits and BELOW zero temperatures! Despite the snow and cold temps, we made our way to Canon City from Colorado Springs and took the 1/2 day jeep and Royal Gorge train tour. Our jeep driver, Tom, was fantastic. He was a confident and safe driver, even in the pouring snow, and was so kind and friendly. He added two wool blankets in the back for our comfort, which was a big help in staying warm. Tom is very knowledgable in area history, points of interest, and his background in forestry was apparent as he pointed out vegetation, trees, and as he searched for wildlife to point out. The kids (ages 12 and 14) were interested throughout the ride, and added to the conversation as he hit upon areas they are currently studying. It was a fun, gorgeous, ride through the mountains and we felt like we were the only people for miles. Thanks again to Tom! I highly recommend the combo tour with the train ride. After the Jeep tour, we drove a couple miles down the road and boarded the train. I highly suggest you spend a little more for the dome car - the views were stunning and it was incredible to see the mountains and river along the gorge. After riding in the Jeep across the suspension bridge earlier in the day, it was so neat to have the added experience of looking up at the bridge from the train as we rode under it. As a bonus, the food on the train is really good -- it was a great day and an unforgettable experience!

For over 3.5 hours Tom Snoke drove us to and through places in the Red Canyon area that we never would have seen or visited. He was exceptionally well versed on the area and was well skilled in navigating the terrain that was both challenging and visually unique. Colorado Jeep Tours provided a great experience with a quality vehicle and route that left us wishing that it wouldn't end for another 3 hours.

We had the best time on our Jeep tour. We loved seeing the views at the arch and took some great family pictures. My teen daughter loved being able to look out over the canyon and get the "perfect" selfie pic for her social media accounts. My 9 year old son loved looking at the rocks, and the dinosaur foot prints. We all found it very interesting to learn about the Morrison Formation for obvious reasons.
Mike was our guide and was well prepared for any weather we may encounter on a summer afternoon in Colorado as well as bringing extra cold water for anyone who ran out, and a first aide kit. Which thankfully we didn't need the first aide kit, but anyone who has young boys know they are full of energy and my son actually slid and fell while we were hiking. Mike was right there to make sure he was ok and didn't need anything. Which of course he was.
It was nice that they kept the amount of people on one tour small. COVID restrictions, you had to have a mask with you and while you were at the office. Once you started traveling it was up to all of us if we wanted to continue wearing our masks. It was my family of 4, and 1 other couple. There are bathrooms on the trip, though some more "rustic" than others.
I recommend people dress in layers, tennis shoes (although I wore Chaco type sandal and was fine), if you have long hair tie it up, as your hat could easily fly off while traveling in the jeep. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a light snack if needed. You are traveling for 3 hours, and it can get warm if the sun is beating in just right. We all had a great time and can't wait to go and do the Royal Gorge tour. (It was booked, but we were happy getting off the beaten path)

The tour and driver, Brandon, were amazing! We have boys ages 6, 8 and 10 who talked the whole time. Brandon did a great job of engaging with them and also conveying all of the information on the history of the area and what we were looking at in a way that they could understand. The boys are dinosaur lovers and this was the perfect for them.

Fantastic tour and tour guide. Richard was very knowledgeable as well as a very safe driver. The roads are narrow and scary at times so beware. Even with the road conditions we felt our driver knew what he was doing. Great trip. Highly recommended.

If you want a fun and wonderfully educational day with your children or grandchildren, this is it. We took our granddaughters and everyone had an amazing time. Our guide, Richard, did an exceptional job especially for our granddaughters relating the history and geology of this beautiful area. Richard was very well informed, extremely polite, humorous and very experienced. There were many highlights, but we all agree the best was seeing the footprints of a multi-ton Stegosaurus that walked on the very spot we were standing on about 100 million years before we arrived. This is a highly recommended adventure and experience. You will create some wonderful memories. Wear plenty of sunscreen.

This experience was great! We were able to access areas of the red canyon that our prius never would have reached! Our guide Richard was personable, friendly, and knowledgeable! His awesome driving skills and experience with the climate and terrain allowed us to have an exciting, yet safe off-road drive. Gorgeous scenery, including a petroglyph stop and dinosaur footprints. We recommend highly, just make sure to keep that seat belt buckled!

Trip through Red Canyon was informative with great views over every hill. Having an experienced jeep driver get up the rugged park roads to remote areas is much better than trying to do it yourself. My Prius would have no chance on those roads. Is a gorgeous area full of things to see, was glad to be able to see some of the roads less traveled by.

We thoroughly enjoyed the jeep tour through Red Canyon (half day). It was very hot, but cold, iced water was supplied by the company. Our guide, Richard, was great; he was affable, very attentive to our needs, informative, and a safe driver. It's a bumpy ride, so be prepared! Richard was knowledgeable about the history, the geology, the geography, as well as the flora and fauna of the region. He invited questions and comments along the way. We were very pleased with the experience.

Highlight of my Colorado trip. Amazing experience! It was a bumpy ride but that made it so fun! Best to go from 5-8pm so it’s cool outside and may see some wildlife on the way. Ask for Richard if you can! He is the bomb and is super sweet!!

Does the jeep tour include switch backs with intense drop offs if you look to your side?? We have some hesitant members of the family or would be fine with bumpy and rugged off road, but driving on the side of a mountain has proven to be extremely stressful for some. Thanks in advance for your answer!

The main part of the tour does not have any drop offs, where you are driving on the edge of a cliff & looking into space. I do not like that kind of drive either. I was very comfortable on this tour. There are bumpy roads & gully's that you drive through but it sounds like you are ok with that. Now, at the very end of the tour our guide gave us the option to drive along Skyline Drive. If you don't like driving on the edge or looking into space DO NOT do this part of the drive. It is easy for the guide to skip this part. It is a one lane road that goes up & up & there is nothing on either side but steep drop offs. Terrifying for me.

Should I take the half day Red Canyon or Royal Gorge jeep tour?
Suz1A
Cripple Creek, CO28 contributions
Both are great, they're just different. Red Canyon is more remote and rugged with lots of gorgeous red rock formations. It's a popular destination for rock climbers. The 8 mile long and 1,000 foot deep Royal Gorge has easier access and it's what most people want to see in the Cañon City area, as it's better known and has the Royal Gorge suspension bridge.

What is the difference between this tour and the HIGH COUNTRY tour?
Bob W

The high country tour is in Colorado Springs. The royal gorge Loop and Red Canyon loop are in the Canon city area. I have never been on the Colorado springs tour but have taken the royal gorge and
red Canyon tours many times.
