        Highly recommended!
We chose the full day cycle tour of rural Penang and were not disappointed! Highlights were learning about palm oil production and seeing a plantation, biking through a variety of villages representing different communities and industries and the amazing food - the ice cream at the end went down a treat! Our tour guides and owner/operators Princilia and SJ were professional, welcoming, open and genuinely passionate about Malaysia and giving tourists an authentic experience. It was obvious they were respected by the local community and had taken the time to get to know them and highlight the wonderful things they were doing as individuals and groups in their communities. The first half of the tour was easy going, winding through villages, stopping to look at different things along the way at a leisurely pace. The second half was more challenging with longer stretches of cycling and in the heat of the day - finishing with some uphill. Be prepared for the heat - it caught me off guard about halfway through but Princilia and SJ sorted me out with some sweet Milo and kaya toast at a local coffee shop and I was fine for the rest of the day. Also, if mosquitos like you, remember to cover yourself in repellent!! They had a great feast on me. My husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed our day and would highly recommend for anyone looking to about how the locals live in rural Penang. If you have the time and are up for the challenge, go for the full day - this is where we saw the palm plantations and had our delicious lunch! Thanks again Princilia and SJ - we will be giving your details to anyone we know travelling to Malaysia and hopefully we will be back one day as well!!

Best thing to do in Penang- Matahari Cycling Tour
The Matahari cycling tour was the best highlight of our Penang trip. Very professional & made us feel at easy as we were very skeptical as we had 10 years old son with us. I recommend the tour even if you have younger kids who can cycle independently. Thank you making our vacation memorable.

        10/10 experience
Had the most amazing experience with Princilia and SJ bike riding through the country town and although I couldn’t make it to the finish line i did as best as I could with the support of Princilia that encouraged me to keep going. Both Princilia and SJ are the two most friendly people and I really loved zooming through the countryside and meeting the locals. You can tell the locals really love and appreciate them and it’s really nice to see. Thank you both Princilia and SJ for being the best guides and made the experiences one to remember for a lifetime!

        Cultural cycling in Penang
A picturesque, active and culturally educational day out, cycling in Penang's South West region. The team from Matahari were safe, organised and passionate about every aspect of the day. Highly recommend.

        Safe, ethical, cultural tour
We went on the 1.0 trip. Excellent quality bikes and the most beautiful scenic bike ride ever! Our guides were knowledgeable, kind and respectful of the locals and their communities. I learned so much more today than expected about food, work and culture in Malaysia. Lunch provided was beautiful as was the location and food was home made by someone in the local community. The ride wasn't too difficult as it's mostly flat. If you're not sure how to use a mountain bike they will explain this to you. Our guides took videos and photos along the way which was an added touch. I felt safe, welcomed and entertained the whole time. This was one of our favorite activities in Malaysia on our trip. Thank you so much and good luck with your future ventures. I hope you win the trip advisor award!!

        A must do for everyone!
Absolutely fabulous! Well organised, professional, clear and prompt communication both before and after, quality bikes, very hospitable, and passionate about educating and sharing the hidden gems of Malaysia. A wonderful way to get out of George Town and experience the countryside. I couldn’t recommend the tour more highly. A must do for everyone. I am a 49 woman, who doesn’t usual cycle, and found it extremely enjoyable and very doable (almost easy).

Exceptional experience even for a Malaysian
Exceptional experience even for a Malaysian: great landscapes, stories, and unforgettable moments whizzing through paddy fields, village roads, sampling edible flowers, and a delightful tea break. Lunch was in a hut by the paddy fields. Also appreciated the safety briefing and orientation ahead of the trip. Thanks again, we’ll return!

        Enjoyable - Educational - Memorable
A very enjoyable experience that you shouldn't pass. Suitable for families and solo travellers alike. Couldn't ask for better operators - SJ and Princilia were fabulous: Knowledgeable, caring and vigilant. It was a bonus to meet the other riders on my tour.

        Believe the hype!
Believe the hype from the previous reviews. I’m always dubious about reviews that say it was the highlight of the trip, but it is actually true! I had such a fabulous time with Princilia and SJ, they were so kind and knowledgeable. Due to some cancellations it was only myself and another traveller, both of us a little nervous that the tour may be too strenuous or fast paced. We were quickly put at ease by the team, and taken great care of. As a plus size traveller, I am often concerned regarding how strenuous a tour may be or if the equipment would be suitable, but I was very pleasantly surprised. I would recommend this tour 100%, and if you have concerns regarding your suitability of the tour, all the staff are so kind and responsive. I will be doing another tour on my next visit.

Without doubt the highlight of my trip to Penang
I found this cycling tour to more rural Penang on line before I left the UK and asked the tour company to include it in my whistle stop 5 day itinerary. The other days they had recommended were the usual 'classic' highlights - Penang Hill, Temples, Walking Tour, Evening Food Tour and walking in the National Park. All very interesting but this trip to Balik Pulau stood out head and shoulders for quality, fascination and fun - it was brilliant. Their website says 'We are often responsible for that highlight of your holiday' and they are 100% correct. I am not a cyclist - far from it - but capable of riding a bike. I was worried in advance that there would be superfit athletes leaving me at 68yrs of age way behind but previous reviews were - correctly - reassuring. It was mighty hot and humid but paced accordingly by the excellent, friendly and totally professional Princilia. The mountain bikes were top quality with clear instructions from SJ, the other guide, and the terrain is flat and easy. Apart from water (provided) there is nothing to carry because personal items are sealed in a bag in the van. The stops were great with coffee and impromptu singing in a café full of local people, learning about cosmetics made from rice and used for the deity, nutmeg, the fishing industry, tsunami training, palm oil production and cottage industries. Final stop a delicious lunch near paddy fields. If you can ride a bike, are reasonably fit and want to experience another side to life in Penang this is a must.

        Great tour, also for children
Nice bike tour with cheerful guides and interesting sites. We brought our 5 year old son with us and everybody was super friendly to him. Maybe the 4 hour tour is a bit to long if you are with young children, especially because of the heat.

Absolutely a Must Do in Penang
This tour is an absolute must if you’re in Penang. You will most definitely not regret it! Princilia and SJ were such great tour guides and truly made the time and effort to pace the tour at your level. We biked and made several stops in between to learn more about the small communities. They have a great rapport with the people of the town and everyone was so friendly. There is so much rich history to Malaysia, and Princilia and SJ informed us so well. They took us to the hidden gems of Penang and there is so much culture to it. They went above and beyond! Thank you Matahari!

The best way of biking !
We enjoyed every minute of our half day bike Tour with SJ and Princilia. It was a different, better way of getting to know the area and the locals. We learned a lot about the fauna & flora, about the local people in the villages. Everything was very good organized, from pick up at the hotel till drop off. Excellent food too. But the best part, was the caring of 2 fantastic empathic and warm hosts. We ll cherish this trip in our harts 💖 we recommend this to all !

We really loved the classic 1.1 tour. We were picked up by our bus at 7am, then after a 1h drive we met our hosts SJ and Princilla who gave us a good safety briefing and off we went. The tour goes for 31km but with lots of breaks along the way: visit an animal farm, a local café, a Chinese temple, learn how to make rice-based body lotion, a local house, a cottage business of palm tree tobacco leaves, a palm oil plantation, a wonderful home made lunch in the middle of rice paddies and at the very end: jumping into the ocean at a secluded beach. SJ and Princilla tell and show you so much throughout the day, this is much more than “just” a bike tour. This is really the perfect way to lean about the real Penang life. The tour requires a certain level of fitness because it does get really hot. However, water is constantly available and replenished and there are many opportunities to have a short break. This is a really fun activity if you are traveling with teenagers.

I went on the Balik Pulau cycle tour yesterday and I HIGHLY recommend it. It was great to be out in the countryside and Priscilla and SJ were amazing hosts and guides. I felt in good hands the whole time.

The excellent bikes made riding a real pleasure and it was a great way to visit some small towns and see some beautiful nature that I couldn’t have visited on my own. The ride is accessible for anyone who is in average shape; there are frequent stops and having lunch in a rice paddy was lovely.

To give an indication of the excellent hospitality: I had mentioned I was interested in nutmeg. At the first stop, SJ showed me a nutmeg tree and got some nuts out. At the next stop, he told us more about nutmeg production & colonial history re nutmeg, and we tasted the fruit around the nut. We also got some nuts to take home. And at the lunch stop, SJ gave us some fresh nutmeg juice (!) to drink - everybody loved it.

I thought it was incredible that they went out of their way to attend to my interests. I highly recommend the experience.

Highly recommend this tour. The team are very professional and passionate about their local heritage. We saw and learned a lot about this part of Penang and its traditions. Bikes and helmets were excellent. Route was flat and not challenging with well timed breaks. A great way to spend a morning!

We had a great time. Matahari took care of everything including the driver, bikes, water, helmets, etc. All of the equipment was in great condition. It's a 50 minute ride from Georgetown but the experience was worthwhile. Got to see another side of Malaysia, biking through the countryside. We took the short version of the tour and it was perfect for us. Picked up from our hotel at around 7am and started biking before the day got hot and ended a little before noon. Princilia was with us most of the time and she explained the history of Penang and various local customs and cultures. Her personal background itself is also very fascinating.

Excellent, very well organised bike tour through lovely scenery and with several fascinating stops to learn about local culture.

The bikes were in good condition and were well-maintained and had been adjusted for our heights in advance.

Our guides Princilla was hugely knowledgable about local flora and fauna and was really friendly. Our other guide, SJ was equally knowledgable abc friendly. Both clearly loved their country and Penang.

Stops included a goat farm, where we fed the goats and a fishing village where had local coffee (kopi) and tried some delicious local treats. We then visited a local house and learned all about nutmeg! Very interesting.

SJ moved our rucksacks by car so we didn’t have to carry them but could retrieve anything we needed at the stopping points.

Despite the wonderful mountainous scenery the ride was flat and easy.

      Highly recommended!

I had a bike tour scheduled at Hoi An Vietnam, I firmly told my guide that I could not ride in any busy street with many traffic around me, not even for 5 minutes, because it made me very nervous!
3 days later, I arrived to Penang. I spent half day with Princilla and SJ—it was the best tour I had in Malaysia.
After helmet fitting and instruction on the bike, Princilia and I cycling through the countryside of Penang. We visited a farm, a fishing village, beautiful landscapes, while cycling at a comfortable pace.
After the tour Princilia sent me many nice photos and videos she made during my tour.

We had the best time! The tour was beyond our expectations. Our guides, Princilia and SJ, were very thoughtful and generous and made us feel safe and comfortable from the beginning. The route was lovely and the cultural tour of the farm life, wild life and cottage industries of the region was fascinating. We have done bicycle tours in other countries but this was the most interesting and the personal attention and care of a smaller tour like this is unbeatable. MATAHARI tour is a must do when in Penang.

I booked this trip as I wanted to see some of the Penang countryside and learn more about the island. I was not disappointed!

I was part of a small friendly group and we saw plenty of lovely green countryside and wildlife, met local people and saw up close some of the local industries that they work in such as farming and fishing. All of this was supported by our friendly and knowledgeable guide and support team, Princilia and SJ. They are passionate about what they do so the tour felt very bespoke and personal. Lovely lunch as well in their “office”!

The pace of the cycle ride was not strenuous so you could talk and ask questions as you went along.

Without question the highlight of my trip to Penang!

This was the best tour I have ever booked! As soon as we arrived at Bukit Pulau we were greeted warmly by Princilia and SJ.
The bikes were great to use and have been looked after well. The scenery was amazing as well as learning the history of the area. Our first stop was to the Goat Farm to try some ice cream and feed the goats. We got to chose our flavour of either vanilla, chocolate or strawberry and the ice cream itself was so smooth and creamy. Definitely a must try. We stopped by a place to eat and Princila and SJ were so generous with the food (Kaya toast, teh tarik and other goodies!). We bought our own food not knowing that we will be looked after so well. Honestly, everything about this trip was spectacular and I fell in love with Penang even more. I wish I could come back soon to bike ride around Bukit Pulau. Thank you so much Princila and SJ for the amazing work you do :)
