Of all the many hills San Francisco is famous for, few contain the special history and strange regard of the local population as the hill - Nob Hill at the top of downtown. Once home to governors, lumber barons, railroad tycoons and wealthy land speculators, the hill at the top of California street played an integral part in the special history of what makes San Francisco special, weird, and unique. Your walking history tour of this once uber-affluent neighborhood begins at front of the Fairmont Hotel with your choice of a morning or early afternoon departure. After meeting your guide and the rest of your small group, you will proceed down the street with an introduction of how this single hill become home to some of this city's most famous and wealthy families. Names like Huntington, Hopkins, and Stanford still ring out more than 100 years later as your guide fills you in on the details of the business, social and political rivalries that once dominated the landscape. You'll learn how the cable car changed the perception of where the rich wanted to build their mansions and how this new form of public transportation tied the city together in a whole new way. You'll hear tales of the great earthquake of 1906 and how the fires reshaped the neighborhood permanently while discovering new restaurants, bars, and places to explore on your own. Once your two hour tour is complete, you'll have the option of eating lunch at one of the famous eateries near the top of the hill at your own expense.

Oct 2019
Alerted was so full of information and history of the Nob Hill area. As it turned out I was the only one signed up the day of my tour. It was a one on one experience. I couldn’t have been more delighted with the tour. She was so prepared and excited about her presentation. I learned so much about Nob Hill. Wonderful!

Nob Hill Walking Tour
Jul 2019 • Family
We selected this tour on our “Sister’s Trip” to San Francisco because it fit best with our schedule, location, and time available on that afternoon. Our tour guide was very informative and knew the history well of the famous Big 4 tycoons and the stories behind Nob Hill. Unfortunately, we were under the impression the tour was 2 hours but the guide stated it was designed for 2.5 so we had to cut it short. The tour included a great length of time (1hr) in the beautiful Fairmont hotel and time allowed to visit the Cathedral, but a donation was required to view the inside of the church. We weren’t aware of that so we did not spend much time there. Not much time was spent “walking” on this tour. We were hoping to “huff and puff” up one of the steep San Fran hills in that area. Based on the description of this tour we thought we would see more buildings with discussion of its architecture and not spend so much time inside one building. However, our tour guide could tell a good story with some fun information looking into the lives of these tycoons and their families.
Haight-Ashbury walking tour would have been more our vibe but it was scheduled too late in the day and not near our other plans we had that day.

Walking tour of Nob Hill
Jun 2019 • Solo
I had an excellent morning adventure with Andrea, highly recommend this tour. As a frequent traveler, I usually seek out small knowledgeable tours when I go to visit places and this tour did not disappoint. She was on time, a good communicator, humorous and knew her facts and history of the buildings, city and people. I think the fact we are both educators made it even more special as she had so much to teach and at the same time was open to listening to questions and learning more 'to connect the dots' of who/what/where/when in this beautiful city. If you are looking for a small and personal time, you will enjoy this tour!

Personal tour of Nob Hill
Sep 2018 • Couples
My husband and I really enjoyed the tour of Nob Hill by a most personal and knowledgeable tour guide, Valarie. She told us stories about the historical figures who were prominent in the city, tales about San Francisco, and related the time periods to what was happening in the U.S. She was engaging and interesting. We have been on tours in several cities around the world and she was one of the best guides we've ever had. I highly recommend her as a guide. She is delightful.

Interesting tour of Nob Hill

Val guided me through the history and the secrets of Nob Hill, revealing the places and the people who made the history of San Francisco.
Her description was very informative and I enjoyed walking around and chatting with her, plus, this tour turned out a private tour, since I was the only customer present.
Double value and excellent experience!

I enjoyed our tour. I did want more information on the architecture as it was more a history lesson on the families who lived in the area. But still a good walk and information.
