What to expect
  • After making your own way to the San Diego Zoo on the day of your choice, you can head into the zoo's visitor center to pick up a map and plan your route through this acclaimed zoo. The animals live in spacious and beautifully designed enclosures that replicate their natural habitats. The koala and giant panda exhibits are always popular, as are the orangutans and siamangs that climb around in lush forest settings. Other highlights include the Tiger River exhibit, which features a realistic Asian rainforest environment, and the Gorilla Tropics, which recreates a lush African rainforest. Zoo keeper talks take place at regular intervals every day, with the experts introducing animals such as giraffes, elephants, wolves, lions or jaguars, and more. In the animal nursery, you might get to see some of the zoo’s newest arrivals. Kids enjoy petting small tame critters in the Petting Paddock and four different play zones provide a safe and entertaining spot to climb and explore. As you make your way through the zoo, note the extensive gardens — some of the plants growing there supply ingredients for the specialized diets of particular zoo residents.

We are locals and recently re-activated our membership after lapsing a few years ago. The visit was just right - great weather, the animals were active (including reptiles) and it wasn’t too crowded. It would be very difficult to see everything in one visit, especially on a weekend or holiday or in summer. Plan accordingly!

Loved the Owens aviary. The Scripps aviary was closed so was disappointed. Overall though very easy to get around. Thanks for the transportations very much needed. Came early and saw many animals and the foliage is magical

Spectacular does not describe how awesome the animals were, and the plant life was amazing. It is expensive, but worth it. The polar bears, gorillas and the koalas were our favorite. The staff was so kind and informative!

We started with the tour bus and this was a great way to get oriented to the zoo, and also a nice transition after spending 20+ minutes getting into the parking lot and ticket lines. A challenge to see everything in one day but better this than the opposite. We also thought the food venues provided reasonable quality food and prices, although not enough were open and required some waiting in line and looking about for seating. A really good value versus Legoland. Both the grandkids (ages 5 and 8) enjoyed all the experiences.

Really enjoyed ourselves having stayed from opening to almost closing.

Our one complaint is that there is no way to logically see everything, and we even got trapped in a "can't get out" until we asked an employee (thanks Albert!)

Last time I was at the zoo I was 10 or 12 years old. I came to San Diego for a workshop and thought I’d make a quick visit. I felt like I was 10 years old again. With a child’s eye and a child’s heart I appreciated the experience. Also, with a more adult animal activist mindset I could appreciate all they are doing for our nature’s creatures.

This review may not be fair because I live by the Columbus Ohio zoo. Both zoo's are well known and I expected the San Diego zoo to be as great as the Columbus zoo and it did not even come close in our opinion. Many animals were not there for us to see. The polar bears were closed and in Columbus you can see them in or outside so no comparision. Many of the animals were not displayed and it was sad. Perhaps we are jaded but it just was not worth the money or time.

This world famous zoo lived up to its high expectations. The exhibits were nice and large and most of the animals were moving around and active on a beautiful 75 degree January day. My favorite were the giraffes and elephants. I am not sure if this is the best zoo I have ever visited but it is in my top 2 or 3. It is definitely the cleanest, nicest and prettiest zoo I have ever visited. The plants and trees made me forget I was in a city. Best to visit early so you can get the whole zoo in. We were there for 6 hours and saw just about everything! I would definitely visit again.

The San Diego Zoo is one of our favorite places to visit. The exhibits showcase the animals in creative ways. The animal collection is vast and the plant collection is even greater! Highly recommend!
