A memorable experience!
Jan 2020 • Solo
Decided to take this tour after reading good reviews and I am so glad I did. Neil Shoemaker and Andy Owen were both great and very knowledgeable. I enjoyed seeing and learning about historic Harlem. Our first stop was at the Canaan Baptist Church where we sat and listened to some beautiful gospel. Neil and Andy seemed to know half of Harlem and got us in without having to stand in long lines. We also visited the beautiful live music venue, Minton Playhouse, and walked past some beautiful historic homes. We also passed by Dapper Dan’s boutique. Neil transported us back in time where we could imagine horse driven carriages and important civil rights activist like Adam Clayton Powell Jr conducting public mass meetings. We also got to hear some top class jazz at the Red Rooster and ended the tour with a visit to the Apollo theatre. I enjoyed learning about the rich history. Highly recommend.

What a great tour experience
Jan 2020 • Friends
The last 3 times I’ve come to New York with different family members & friends, I have taken them to do this tour.
Neal Shoemaker, being a passionate local born & bred here, does a great job of bringing Harlem to life.
We started the tour with a visit to Canaan Baptist Church and enjoyed the 1st part of their service with the sounds of wonderful gospel choir. It was a very moving experience.
This was followed by a walking tour of beautiful Harlem, with Neal playing Jazz on his iPad, it really sets the scene, as he points out places of interest and shares the history of this place & the changes it has gone through.
We visited a Jazz bar, in full swing playing great music and visited the iconic Apollo theatre.
I can highly recommend this tour, it is fun and very interesting.
Thank you Neal for a another very enjoyable experience.

A Great Day in Harlem
Dec 2019
A few years ago, I took the "Harlem Jazz Tour" with Neal, of Harlem Heritage Tours. Recently, I participated in a different tour with Harlem Heritage, the "Harlem Gospel Tour". This time, Neal was joined by Toni as tour guide for the group. The two tours complimented one another, and both were excellent. Both guides were knowledgeable, good communicators, and delightful companions. They engaged participants of all ages with their stories and in sharing our surroundings. During our time together, we visited a church service where we heard gospel music, and we also walked to historic locations where gospel and jazz music was performed and made famous.
As we walked, Neal pointed out changes that are currently happening in the Harlem community. Both guides were approachable and willing to answer our questions. I highly recommend this tours for those who want a deeper understanding of New York City, American History, and the African American contribution to the culture of the world.

Harlem - by those who really know it
We had a wonderful time with Neil and Toni on our 2.5 hour Harlem Gospel Walking Tour. Toni met us at the starting point and we spent a few minutes introducing ourselves to our fellow tour participants. This allowed us to have great interactions with others in our group.
Our first destination was church. Having been to African American churches before, I found this to be a good example of gospel church. We stayed at church long enough to hear some gospel music and get the feel of the church but not so long as to shorten our walk around Harlem.
Neil joined us at the church and we enjoyed a very informative tour of the area. Both Neil and Toni were happy to answer any questions we had; making the tour very interactive. I felt I had a useful working knowledge of Harlem and it’s history. The buildings and wide streets were a contrast for other areas of NYC.
One of my companions asked to see the location of a famous 1950’a picture of many jazz artists and Neil and Toni were willing to walk us to the location after the tour. Very generous of them. They also suggested a delicious restaurant for lunch that featured fantastic live jazz. The name of the restaurant was the Red Rooster.
All in all, we were quit thrilled with our Sunday morning and lunch in Harlem. We would definitely schedule another tour offered by Neil at heritagetours.com.

Harlem Gospel Walking Tour
Sep 2019 • Family
I visited with my 22 year old daughter. The group included people from USA(the south), Argentina,Australia and several European countries. We were made very welcome and felt this was the real deal. Privileged to attend the Sunday church service. Neal’s tour of the area was excellent and his love of Harlem and all that has been achieved was shown by his enthusiasm. All topped of with a sample of ribs from Sylvia’s. All in all highly recommended.

A fun way to visit Harlem
Aug 2019 • Family
We had a lovely tour guide who was the fittest 91 year old we’ve ever seen. He was very knowledgable and a great tour guide. He showed us around Harlem and recommended one of the best places to eat called The Red Rooster where we had lunch after the tour.
The visit to the Gospel church was really good although it was totally designed for tourists. At times it didn’t feel very authentic, however the singing in the church was great. The hoards of tourists are put in a long queue outside the church and herded in. This part felt very touristy and so did the fact that we were told not to pass the offering tray without being expected to give an offering. I think I would have preferred to visit a church service without being part of a tourist group. Highly recommend our guide who was so nice to us all. Definitely go to The Red Rooster for brunch after!

The Harlem Gospel Tour was a great and very special experience! The Gospel church service was a big celebration of life and the atmosphere was stunning. After the service we were guided around important places in Harlem and learned a lot about the history and culture of the area. I would highly recommend the Tour! A great tour in Harlem, given by Neil. Guiding us in through time and streets, Neil was enthusiastic, informative and fun. As a group we had a great vocal jazz session in front of a famous jazz club. Neil being of course the leader of the band. His tour and personality is recommended to get to know Harlem.
