We had a great experience despite a big problem… the attendant at Stop 2 forgot to give me my tickets for the Empire State Building add-on so when we arrived at 4:45 for our scheduled reservation, we were told we didn’t have the correct tickets to enter. And by that time, Big Bus Tours had closed for the day. I chatted with someone online who told me to visit Stop 1 in the morning and talk to an attendant there. Thankfully, I met Wanda who helped get the entire situation fixed and was able to help me schedule a new reservation for later that day and gave me an extra day of the bus for the hassle. I highly recommend visiting Stop 1 to start your tour and not starting at another stop. Only Stop 1 had as many attendants available, but were more knowledgeable, and provided lots of helpful information. I suggest Big Bus either provide more knowledgeable attendants at the other stops or make it a requirement (or at least a strong suggestion to start at Stop 1) rather than saying on the tickets that you can redeem them at any stop.

Hello Megan, Thank you so much for your detailed feedback! We apologize for the inconvenience but we are pleased to hear that our team was able to help correct the issue with your reservation and you enjoyed your visit. It is true that we currently have the most amount of agents at our first stop, but prior to COVID, we did staff most locations. We hope to be able to return to our normal operations soon and appreciate your suggestions for future guests!

Hmmm!
This is a difficult review to write because, although my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the Big Bus experience, we can empathise with some of the negative comments given by other reviewers too.
Firstly, it's important to decide what you want to do because big savings can be made by booking ‘combos’. For example, the Big Bus 2-day deluxe ticket is priced at $80 and the Circle Line Best of NYC circumnavigation of Manhatten costs $42. But we obtained both via a Circle Line ‘combo’ at just $62 – virtually a 50% saving.
The down side to our combo is that we had to go to the Circle Line pier to change our Circle Line reservations into Big Bus vouchers and then go to the Big Bus office (inside Madam Tussauds, Times Square) to change these into a Big Bus tickets. We were based near Times Square, so this was not too bad for us, but if your hotel's not there, this could present a problem. We walked the 5 blocks from Times Square to the pier and back and, by the time we had queued to get our tickets, two hours had passed.
Next, don’t under-estimate how long these loops take and don’t over-estimate how much you can do in a day. Both the uptown and downtown loops take a good 2 hours to complete so, theoretically you could complete both in a day. But, in practice, this won’t happen. You need to obtain your ticket and you need to queue for the bus. After 2 hours of sight-seeing you need to spend time to eat, drink and unwind. And you may want to re-visit some of the sites you saw on the tour. So, realistically, one of the big tours per day is enough.
That also begs the question about what you’re buying in your combo. Including the ubiquitous queuing, a trip up and down the Empire State Building takes 2 hours and the Liberty Island cruise takes a similar 2 hours. A fleeting visit to any museum would take 3 or 4 hours. So, in 48 hours there are only so many sites and tours that you can take in. We did the two big loops, the Liberty Island cruise and the Night Tour and, quite honestly, we were worn out.
The Big Bus is advertised as ‘hop on, hop off’. In theory it is but, in practice, most passengers do a full loop before deciding where to hop off the bus. So, if you want to join the bus at one of the less popular stops where virtually no one gets off, then it’s quite possible that the bus will be full.
Incidentally, the queue for the Night Tour was 200 yards long when we joined it at 19:30. A bus was leaving Times Square every 10 minutes and we got on ours at about 20:15. Everyone was guaranteed and upstairs seat and the organisers said that anyone who joined the queue before 21:00 was guaranteed a tour.
During our 48 hours we experienced four Big Bus Tour Guides. They were all very knowledgeable and I would rate one as good, two as very good and ‘Cruz’ on the night bus as excellent. They were all willing and able to answer questions. And, yes, they all mentioned the ‘tipping box’ by the driver’s door, but I didn’t feel that they over-played this issue.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our 48 hours pass and I would recommend the Big Bus tour to anyone wanting to obtain an overview of the city. Before purchasing your combo ticket, plan what you really want to do and be realistic about how long each tour is going to take so that you don’t waste money on combos that are physically un-realistic.
Oh! And be prepared for a lot of queuing.

We had a good time and we’re given some great information about New York. It was a lot of fun. This is way to much for a minimum.

Horrible service . We stood in a line for one hour because three buses in a raw had the wedding and they were not taking people. Another buses were full.

The drivers do not speak English.

There is no guide and the audio guide is not informative .

We never got a ticket, they just let us get on and off, but when we went to the Empire State Building, they said the bus tour should have given us a ticket, and, of course, they were already closed and the phone number doesn’t work. We lost $150 because we weren’t able to do the Empire State Building. Very disappointing!!

The recorded commentary is horrible. On a tour bus people are interested in knowing what buildings and sites are around them. NOT "banter" between the actors who recorded it. Also keep to your designated bus stops. Announce the bus stop number every time. Follow your posted schedules. Worst time waster ever. Not even a pretense of following the schedule. Pre recorded banter was little help figuring out what was what.

Let me start by saying my family an I have ridden the Big Red Bus tour in Chicago, California and Georgia and they were amazing, informative, kind and helpful. But The New York Big Bus tour was atrocious. They need an extreme employee make over.
With the exception of John whom was outgoing, kind and had a smile that invited you to speak to him.

Avoid this tour. They have others.

I have enjoyed all hop on/hop off bus tours until this experience. Despite having printed out our tickets, with UPC code on it, we were told we had to walk to the first stop/office on our first day. On the tickets, it clearly stated that we could hop on and off any stop and our printed ticket would initally be scanned. Not so. The line was long at the first stop/office housed in Madame Toussad's. Two other groups in line next to us were also disgruntled at having to wait in line. Didn't matter if the printed ticket was a UPC or URL. Who knows how far they had to walk to get there. The person at the desk was unsurprised and unappologetic.
We eventually got processed and seated on the bus. Things went fine, it was a very average experience. A very unpleasant surprise came when we were back on the bus later and came to a stop. "Everyone off!" yelled the announcer over and over. "This is the last stop" A couple of people had just gotten on the bus on the previous stop and now the entire bus was made to get off the bus. Some people who clearly didn't speak English were confused and greatly concerned. Now, a reasonable person would expect that the hop on/hop off feature of the bus would mean just that, and that the bus would continue in its loop/route. Again, not so. Know that you will be forced to get off the bus and made to walk from wherever the last stop is! We encountered the same thing the next day when we first walked to the Empire State Building. We wanted to then do the Uptown Blue Route, but were told that since the big bus stop there was the last one on the uptown tour we could not get on it! Again, this is not a hop on/hop off feature you might expect. We had several workers who told us to go to different stops in order to get an uptown bus. All but one were incorrect and in the area we were in many more downtown buses were running than uptown ones. We were told the uptown buses were about every 20-30" and the downtown were about every 5-10". By then we had walked at least a couple miles and waited before getting on an uptown bus. Big waste of our time!! Through no fault of Big Bus, traffic was being rerouted because of a parade so we were out of luck getting near the Met Museum. That entailed another long walk after about 15 minutes on the bus. We were relieved to take the subway back and regret having gotten the Big Bus at all. I cannot recommend it.

I would highly discourage anyone from using this tour company. Our hotel concierge recommended it so we thought it was a good idea but it ended up being a disaster. "Agents" all over the city on every corner in Time Square are selling this service which enables you to hop on and off buses and get tickets for the status of liberty and discounted bike rentals. Unfortunately for us we bought our tickets at the hotel before we noticed the street "Agents" which would have tipped me off not to buy the tickets. The problem is the lines were 1.5-2.0 hours to "hop on" a bus so we ended up not using it. Also, they told us we could avoid the line at the statue of liberty and directly board the boat even though I pointed out to the Big Bus Tours "agent" at the south ferry that there was a huge line...a big lie. We waited in line for 3 hours because our tickets were flex tickets and had no reservation time. The line for the night tour was 2 hours long in from of the M&M store at 8 PM. Getting on a simple bus ride was a disaster and we never could get on another bus after the night tour. Our tour guide on the night tour had very limited knowledge of the city and basically read the building signs as we drove through the city (i.e. there's Macy's, there's the Empire State Building (20 times). As a visitor to the city (2 times per year), I think I could have given a better tour. After we had our tickets, the aggressive "agents" throughout the city, kept trying to sell us tickets and I told them the lines were 2 hours line and their response was "it's a busy week". The legitimate thing to do would have been for them to stop selling tickets because they were way overbooked but they kept selling aggressively to get their sales commission. There are only a limited number of buses and because there are no reservation times, they can sell an unlimited number of "Hop on Hop off" tickets for a very limited number of buses. Think about it, they can sell 10,000 tickets if they want for buses that hold 1000 people. This is just an example of how they can rip people off. I wouldn't go anywhere near this company ever again. Anytime you see people selling things on the street that's a bad sign. A huge waste of money!! Don't make the same mistake that we made!!

We only had 4 days in NYC this trip. And we wanted to see as many things as we possibly could. The Big Bus Tour ended up being the perfect solution for us. At first we were unsure about taking this tour because many of the sales people are a little pushy and they seem to be all over the place....but after taking a few minutes to talk with one of the representatives outside of our hotel, we changed our minds....he actually took the time to show us the reviews on trip advisor...which we use anytime we travel and want accurate descriptions and reviews of activities and restaurants....and there was no comparison between Big Bus Tours and the closest rated similar tours. We chose the 2 day, 2 route tickets. Since this is a "hop on/ hop off" tour, we could choose where we wanted to go ...we were provided with a really good route map that was actually a pretty good map of the Manhattan area of NYC. It showed all of the stops on the routes. We decided to do the Uptown route one day and the Downtown route the next. We were also provided with earbuds, which we were allowed to keep, so we could hear very clearly the narration by the guide whether we were sitting in the open air upper level of the bus or on the air-conditioned lower level. The tour guides we had (4 different people at different times) were not only informational, but quite entertaining as well. One of the days we went it looked as if it might rain and Big Bus Tours provided rain ponchos for everyone that we also were allowed to keep. We got to see everything from The Empire State Building to Central Park to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the 9/11 Memorial and the One World Trade Center Building. We would highly recommend these tours to anyone who wants to see as much of NYC as possible in a convenient and reasonably priced way. We would not hesitate to take this tour again the next time we are in NYC!
