What to expect
  • Journey along one of the world’s most isolated roads from Fairbanks to the Arctic Circle on this 14-hour tour through the Alaskan wilderness. Following afternoon hotel pickup in Fairbanks, travel with your informative guide along the Dalton Highway, technically Alaska Route 11. You’ll stop occasionally to stretch your legs and snap memorable photos of key sites. Plus, keep your eyes open for Alaskan wildlife like foxes, moose, or possibly even bears, wolves or lynx. Dalton Highway runs north-south through Alaska, almost to the Arctic Ocean, and parallels the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Stop along a section of the pipeline in the community of Fox, and get a good look at its construction while learning about its controversies and environmental impact. One of the world’s largest pipeline systems, the Trans-Alaska Pipeline was built in the 1970s to carry crude oil from Prudhoe Bay 800 miles (1,287 km) south to Valdez. Back on the Dalton Highway, drive over the EL Patton Bridge, the only bridge in Alaska that crosses the Yukon River. With an impressive length of 2,295 feet (700 meters), the bridge carries not only vehicle traffic but also the pipeline. Take a picture of the bridge and then stop again further down the road to admire Finger Mountain that offers views of the alpine tundra.

When you arrive at the edge of the Arctic Circle, pose for commemorative photos around the sign displaying your latitude of 66°33’ north. Absorb the natural beauty around you and enjoy the provided sandwiches, coffee and homemade hot punch. Then, climb back aboard your vehicle to begin the drive back to Fairbanks. At this time, it'll be about two to three hours before midnight, an ideal period to start watching for the northern lights. If they do appear, your driver will pull over at several different spots, including the Tolovana River and Wickersham Dome, to give you ample time to marvel at and take photos of this natural phenomenon. Your Fairbanks northern lights tour concludes with hotel drop-off in the early morning hours.

Heavy snow cut the tour short. We barely made it to the Dalton Highway sign before having to turn back. Not to mention the lack of lights.

Pick up from hotel and drop off was very convenient. Vehicle was comfortable but crowded, perhaps two fewer seats would help making seat rotation and putting layers of clothing on easier. Huge drawback was that due to humidity of so many people, the windows begin to fog up and eventually freeze over so unless you’re on the front, your viewing experience is limited. Had a great and knowledgeable tour guide providing insights into the land/lifestyle of the land you’re entering. The Dalton Highway was not build for tourism, so expect to get bounced around a bit. If all you want to do is see the northern lights, this tour is not for you. However, if you want to see the Arctic Circle and the land, you are on the right tour and the price of entry is to get bounced up the Dalton Highway.

This trip was awesome! Our tour guide Jonathan was so wonderful and informative that we had to thank him with a nice tip after the trip! He was such a safe driver given the isolated and snowy weather condition in dalton highway! The drive was long (~5hrs to get to the artic circle alone) with lots of stretch breaks in between for photo sessions in the snow! Includes turkey/meatless sandwiches/snacks/water, arctic circle, pipeline stop/history, dalton highway stop/history, stops to see the northern lights. We were able to see the elusive northern lights and stars at one of our stops despite the clouds, a miracle!! At the end of the trip, we got our certificates stating that we reached at the arctic circle! Such a memorable trip!

Driving through the Dalton Highway with snow covered trees and mountains was absolutely breathtaking. We were able to catch a sunset, and it was pretty spectacular. At one point, a small herd of Caribou rain along side the road and up the hill.
We arrived at the Arctic Circle six hours into our trip.
The Northern Lights were a little on the disappointing side that night. We sat in the van waiting and waiting. When they finally appeared, they were little streaks of green, not the full sky. But, we did see it!

Thank you so much for this great review and we are glad that you enjoyed your tour. So exciting that you got to see the Caribou herd, but less exciting that you didn't have a great Northern Lights show.

This is about 14 hours trip with my son… but all worth it ! Started with the Alaska Pipeline, Dalton Highway, Yukon River site, the crossing carabous, the Arctic Circle. Jake our “never gave up” tour guide just knew where to take us for a good chance to see Miss Aurora Borealis aka, the Northern Lights. It was snowing and cloudy that day, but miraculously at about 230am, she peeked and came out. Thank God… that was my birthday already and one of my answered prayers. She’s beautiful and you just can’t believe one of the wonders of God creation full force in front of you. My tour group even sang HB to me a little after midnight. What a sweet group!!!

Very happy with the experience.
Our guide, Jake, was very informative and had good stories to tell about the Alaska life and history.
He also did manage to show us northern lights from a spot even on a cloudy night (when we had lost our hopes of seeing any).
The drive on Dalton highway was also an experience in itself.

Highly recommend this tour!

This was an absolutely amazing trip! Beautiful Fall scenery, legendary Alaska sights (Dalton Highway, Alaska Pipeline) and the fabulous Lady Aurora who made multiple heart-stopping appearances!
I'm not going to say that our tour leader Nate had anything to do with that, but it wouldn't surprise me. He was enjoyable, knowledgeable and very entertaining. He took very good care of us on our journey.
Thank you, Nate, and everyone at Alaska Wildlife Guide tours!
