  • Choose to look for the northern lights from outdoor or indoor locations
  • Relax in hot spring pools while waiting for total darkness
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off provided
What to expect
  • After evening pickup from your Fairbanks or North Pole hotel, take a leisurely drive northeast of the city, perhaps spotting a fox, beaver, or moose along the way, before reaching Chena Hot Springs Resort. Engage in a variety of activities while you wait for the sky to darken to view the northern lights. First, tour one of the most unique museums you’ll ever visit, the Aurora Ice Museum, constructed out of over 1,000 tons of ice and snow. Marvel at ice sculptures by world-renowned carvers Steve and Heather Brice, whose work includes life-size jousters on horses and a two-level tower with a circular staircase. Fancy a drink? Head over to the museum’s bar, settle in on a caribou fur–covered stool and purchase a cocktail poured into a martini glass carved out of ice. For food, check out the offerings at the Aurora Café or the Chena Hot Springs Resort Restaurant (own expense). Or, put on your bathing suit and work on loosening those knots in your back. Slip into the resort’s hot springs, which swirl with lake water averaging 106 degrees Fahrenheit (41 degrees Celsius) all year. Escape to an outdoor hot tub and unwind under the stars. A heated indoor pool is also available. Then, dress warmly and meet your guide for a small group outing to watch for the northern lights. You’ll be taken to prime viewing locations at Chena Hot Springs, a great spot to witness the green and purple ribbons of light dazzling the sky. If you prefer to be indoors, you can see the action from inside the Aurora Café. Either way, you’ll be holding a warm drink as you gaze at the celestial wonder.
Afterward, enjoy transport back to your hotel, with a commemorative certificate of your viewing experience at Chena Hot Springs Resort.

Worth the cost! Dress warmly!!
Really relaxed trip with complimentary pick up/drop off. We rented a Airbnb and they were easily able to accommodate that for us. The ice museum was short was interesting. The tour guide was funny and very nice. The hot springs are really worth the 1 hour drive. They’re so beautiful and relaxing but you only get two hours there. We saw northern lights while in the springs but also our guide took us northern lights hunting and we found it!! 10/10 recommend!

Hot springs and Northern lights

Cloudy skies cleared for a beautiful show! Springs and ice house were fun too! Locker room needs an update. Girls side had no shower benches for changing. Had to pay for lockers and bring own towels. Those could have been included in price. Restaurant was very busy and took a lot of tour time.

Fantastic Night
Oct 2021
Where to begin is the question. I guess you have to start with the beginning when we were picked up at our hotel. First stepping out of the hotel, Lexi greeted us by name which impressed us and got us into the van. Lexi stated that there was one more person and we would then be on our way. Once that person was picked up, Lexi put the mike on and went to town greeting us and telling us some of the details of the trip we would be going on. Lexi was energetic and lively. She did inform us about the conditions of the night and if there was a chance of the seeing the Northern Lights she would do her best. It had been snowing for a few days and it was at the tail end of it so there was still cloud cover in some areas but she would be tracking on her apps and keep us informed. Finally she said all she could and told us to ask her any questions we might have. We learned that this was her third week and how she came about getting the job. Even though it should take about an hour to get there the road conditions were not in our favor so Lexi took her time to make sure we were safe and that we safely arrived at our destination. Once finally there she took us to the reception area prior to the Ice Museum, Informed us that while we were at the Ice Museum she would check our reservations at the restaurant and make sure everything was good to go. My wife entered the Ice Museum and had a traditional Apple Martini that was served in a hand made ice glass. Took pictures and have a great 45 minutes of time. You can buy a ticket at the reception house or pay cash in the Ice Museum. Lexi joined us and just eased into the conversation and not just with us but the others on the tour as well. She unwittingly kept track of all us. After the Ice Museum we took our glass, based on a tradition to blow into the glass and then throw it up and if it shatters into pieces when it hit the ground, the wish would come true. We then proceeded to dinner. Lexi did tell us we didn't have to eat and go straight to the springs so you do not have to eat unless you want to. We had the Halibut with fries and it was very, very good. Some of the tour left after they ate and Lexi handed them a pass to the springs and stated to be back at midnight. My wife and I chose to not do the springs and just walked around the area. Didn't wonder too far due to possible bears and moose but just close enough, back of the restaurant and sat by a fire that was going. At Midnight Lexi had the van pulled up to the doors to the restaurant and we piled in. Lexi stated that we would be going about ten minutes and then pull over for a chance to see the lights. Lexi stated that she was on the apps and it looked good to see them but not the intensity of them. We stopped, Lexi got out to look, came back and was excited to tell us the lights were going. We all got out and had a great time taking pictures. Lexi had already stated what setting to use on the iPhones and Androids which my wife and I were impressed she was will to learn that information and inform us. Lexi also took some pictures of you with the lights in the background. Could not state how long we were there but it was a great time. We piled in again and Lexi state two more stops were in order. Second and third stops didn't produce too much of the show so we finally ended the tour by Lexi stopping to drop us off. Will say that we had one individual drink too much and pretty much made a fool of themselves, but Lexi handled it like a pro and we were glad that person was the first one to be dropped off. We can not say enough on how impressed we were with Lexi. My wife and I have been on tours and Lexi was by far the best tour person we ever had. She will make the business boom and surly be asked for when people book this tour. She will be missed when she leaves but maybe be convinced to stay until her retirement? Lexi is very engaging and charismatic. It was also amazing to us the knowledge of the area and Alaska that Lexi made it her business so she can inform us in only three week of work. A true asset to your company.

Jake was our tour guide and he was excellent! You could tell that he really knew his stuff and was knowledgeable in a wide range of areas. He strived to keep us engaged and encouraged us to ask any questions. Although we did not get to see the Northern Lights we were not too disappointed because Jake's enthusiasm and expertise made up for it.

I saw the Northern Lights and they were beautiful!!
Sep 2021
My main reason for booking this tour was to see the northern lights. I came to Fairbanks last year and left disappointed because I didn't get to see them. This time around I made better plans and decided this tour was my best chance. I was picked up right at 5pm from in front of my hotel. I can't remember the driver's name but he did the best he could with trying to get everyone to talk and be motivated on the ride there. The drive to Chena Hot Springs took a little over an hour due to major construction on the road. Once we arrived there was a rush to get everyone checked in so that we would have time to visit the Ice Museum. I had put my swim suit on under my clothes but never made it to the hot springs which is fine because I never really wanted to go. As I mentioned before, the lights were my main objective when booking this tour. I did eat at the restaurant though. It took a very very long time to get seated. Our driver had arranged to get a couple of tables for those of us in the group who wanted to eat. Once the tables were ready, there was another long wait just to order the food. Once we put in our orders, there was another long wait to actually receive them. Apparently they don't have enough employees. I'm not exactly sure how much time passed from the time we walked into the restaurant until we paid for our food and left, but I estimate it to be over two 1/2 hours. Maybe 3. I wasn't really hungry but I needed to do something to pass the time and this took up a lot of time. By the time we paid and walked out there were people rushing to get to the hot springs before they closed at 11pm. It was at this time that our driver came and said he wanted to show us something. He walked us out into the front near the parking lot and there they were. The northern lights! The sky was so clear that we didn't even have to get in the shuttle and drive anywhere to search for them. They put on a show right there in front of us. Caution: A few of us learned the hard way about taking pictures at night or in the dark. I had trouble taking pictures with my iPad. Others had smart phones and didn't know how to use them to get a good shot either. So if you plan on taking pictures and videos of the lights, please learn how to use your phone, camera, iPad, or whatever type of electronics you bring. We didn't leave for another 2 hours or so after this because the driver wanted to make sure we all got what we paid for and also to make sure the lights didn't make another appearance. They did! Overall I enjoyed myself and I finally got a chance to see the northern lights and can now check them off my bucket list. Now on to my next adventure.

Chasing the Lights for my 65th
Sep 2021 • Friends
This is a great tour and Nate was the best. He keeps track of all of his people making sure everyone is having fun and seeing what they came to see. He has lots of resources to check weather conditions for the lights and he goes above and beyond trying to find them! The Ice Museum was really interesting and fun! Even though we weren't able to see the lights due to the weather, we had such a great time and I would definitely book and request Nate!

One of the best experience in Fairbanks
Sep 2021 • Solo
One of the best tour I have during my stay in Fairbanks . After a couple failed attempts to see the Northern lights , this tour at the last day of my stay made my wish come true.
The Chena hot springs, the dinner arrangement and the Ice museum are well organized.
The group is super friendly and fun.
I recommend the tour to any first time visitors to Fairbanks .
