Highlights
Walking tour lets you get up close with a piece of New Orleans history
Guide commentary lets you learn about voodoo and the city's haunted history
Comfortable, convenient round-trip transport from the French Quarter included
Take home a voodoo amulet to remember your tour
What to expect
Meet your guide and group in the French Quarter, where you’ll board an air-conditioned vehicle for a quick ride to the St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, one of the city’s oldest. From outside the gates of the cemetery, your guide will tell you about the reasons for above-ground burials and the use of mausoleums. See some of its huge society tombs, and hear tales about New Orleans voodoo queen Marie Laveau. View her tomb, which is a pilgrimage destination for people from across the world. In keeping with tradition, cast a spell or make a wish at her grave. Your guide will also teach you about the continuing practice and development of voodoo in modern New Orleans. Walk away from the tour with your very own gris-gris (voodoo amulet) to take home. Return to the French Quarter for drop-off at the end of your tour.

Worth Every Penny!

This tour was fascinating, fun and extremely informative! Our small group had a leisurely time strolling through St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 with our educated guide and learned a lot. Our bus took us past many sites while our guide provided enlightening narration. I love my gris-gris bag! I've been to the French Quarter many times and this is the first time I have taken this tour. Don't miss it!!

I really liked the tour. Our guide was Charlie and he told a lot of stories. We were picked up by bus where all the Grayline tours in NOLA start.

Knowledgeable and kept interest
Gail was very friendly and greeted us all individually. At the ceremony she explained the history as well as where the families status currently. The stories were interesting and how she told them kept my 11 and 12 year old interested.
The cemetery was very busy. Even though it was crowded at times she navigated it well where we would not be caught up in the busy pockets.
At the end of the tour we each received a gris-gris bag. She was kind enough to give my kids extra ones to give to their friends.

Wow, this guy put so much effort, personality & knowledge into his presentation you couldn’t fail to be engaged or interested.
He had great solid stories to tell & information to give us, he made it fun which for us was ideal, we didn’t want years & facts & figures quoting, we wanted the experience to be light, fun & interesting & it certainly was.
What a very engaging, knowledgeable man Jim is. Thank you

Deception
Mar 2020
We really expected that tour, eager to learn about voodoo traditions, legends and histories. We learned nothing that is not published in a basic NOLA tour guide. Sure we've seen Marie Laveau's supposed caveau, but we didn't learn anything about her. Our tour guide spoke more about the town history and her personal family life. If this tour was called "historic tour of the cemetary by a native", it would be more accurate. NOLA is wonderful. That was the only money lost we experienced during our stay, but it seems that because of vandalism and all, tour guides are an obligation now, if you want to see cemetary #1. If i could undo that, i would choose a young local creole person who offer a walking tour experience with real knowledge of voodoo culture.

We are sorry you feel deceived. We do promote your learning of the history of burial rituals and the evolution of voodoo. We regret to hear you did not enjoy the historical narratives and found the information "basic NOLA." We encourage our guests to ask any questions during the tour if you wish to hear more on a particular topic or particular figure.

JoAnn was our Guide
Mar 2020 • Couples
JoAnn was our guide for this set of tours. If you could pick your tour guide for this tour i would highly recommend her. She has a very great energy about her and definitely knows her stuff. I’m so grateful my parents, fiancé and I were able to learn history of Marie Lavaue through her and about the very vast types of graves you find at the Cemetary.

My daughter and I went on the 3/3/20 walking tour of St. Louis Cemetery #1 and JoAnn was our guide, she was very knowledgeable and presented the history of the city and the cemetery that makes you want to come back and hear a lagniappe (little bit) more!

This tour was a fun way to learn some history and stories from our past. Try to take the tour with Mary Dugas! She was super informative and awesome at portraying the history. We also took a tour of the Oak Alley Plantation with them and it was worth it as well! Going to try to take all their tours
