Highlights
  • Visit the historic Whitney Plantation on a day trip from New Orleans
  • Louisiana’s only plantation focused on the history of slavery
  • Learn about plantation life through recorded narratives and exhibits
  • Transport from New Orleans is included, so no need to rent a car
What to Expect
Board a coach in the French Quarter and leave New Orleans behind for the swampy shores of Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River. Arrive at Whitney Plantation, a one-time sugar and indigo plantation that dates back more than 260 years. Unique among Louisiana’s historic plantations, Whitney is dedicated to promoting an understanding of slavery in the American South. Hear firsthand accounts of the hardships of plantation life through narratives recorded by the Federal Writers’ Project, and browse historic artifacts in a series of exhibits. See some of the surviving slaves cabins, which stand in sharp contrast to the stately Big House, considered one of Louisiana’s best surviving examples of Spanish Creole architecture. Several memorials and pieces of art dedicated to the memory of enslaved people offer a chance to reflect before the return drive to New Orleans. The tour ends at the original departure point.

The tour is now self guided which I think takes a little something away from the experience but nonetheless it is impactful and well worth the trip. The walk through history shares some of the harsher aspects of the era and had us reflecting on the injustices of our past. Nicely

Extremely well done view of plantation life from the vantage point of the slave family. Provided me with a new perspective. Due to Covid no live guided tours only audio tours but it was very useful and well done.

An excellent museum, exhibits, and narratives of slavery, how the migration of slaves started, and the life of enslaved people on this plantation. Yo will tour the grounds, see cabins, outbuildings, the kitchen, memorials (artwork), the church, and the main plantation home.

This must have been the Whitney Plantation and it is a remarkably well told story or day to day life for the enslaved people who lived and worked there

What a wonderful tour, all around. We wanted to spend sometime away from the city and we are very much into history. We appreciated that this tour specific focuses on the history of the enslaved people of this plantation, as opposed to the just the architecture on the property.

Meghen, we appreciate the great review. Kindrell is a great driver guide and truly enjoys every guest. I believe that you took the Whitney Plantation Tour and we will share your comments about their counter worker with them. All plantation require a drive from New Orleans, as Plantation Country as it is often called, was out in the country and people came to the "town" (New Orleans) by a slower transportation than a bus. It must have been a days drive by buggy.
