    Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center
Stop: 2 hours - Admission included
We will visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. The AWCC opened to the public in 1993. It is located on 140 acres at the southern edge of Turnagain Arm and the entrance to Portage Valley. The center’s mission is to provide care and rehabilitation for injured and orphaned wildlife and to provide wildlife education and awareness. Animals that are unable to be released or survive in the wild are given refuge in the center's spacious habitats. Here people can safely get close, observe and photograph some of Alaska's largest land animals, including moose, bison, elk, deer, caribou, bears muskox, small mammals and birds of prey. During spring and summer, visitors can often witness the rehabilitation of orphaned baby animals of various species.

Enjoyed seeing animals we don't usually see around our neck of the woods. There was a lot of walking for my wife who has mobility problems. Zac offered to drive us around the conservatory but my wife decided to go on her own with my help. Zac was an excellent, tour guide who seemed to generally care about his each of his customers. He seemed to genuinely enjoy his job and it was reflected in his attitude and demeanor. O

Albert was a fantastic guide with a wealth of information. He stopped in a couple places and pointed out the best bakery in the area as well. He was full of information about the animals and the wildlife center and we look forward to booking other adventures with him.

Albert gave a fantastic tour, he is so knowledgeable about Alaska. He does so many other tours, we will definitely contact him when we return. The difference between this tour and others I have been on through trip advisor was, this tour was never rushed, no question went unanswered, And Albert’s love for Alaska shines through the entire tour. Thank you for the wonderful experience!

Overall, we were expecting much more from this packet/excursion.
Pros: they pick you up from your hotel (cannot be a b&b or Airbnb). The van is air conditioned and the driver wears a mic so everyone hears the driver. The driver was very cool and friendly.
Cons: overpriced. The van can be fully booked so you are squeezing with little room on your seat. The animal sanctuary tour was a little hurried because they are on a timeline. The animals in the sanctuary may or may not be visible. You don't get to pet any animals.
Overall, it might be best to rent a car and just visit the sanctuary at your own leisure. The price is too high.

Thank you for your review. All feedback is welcomed and we use customer feedback to better our products. Our Alaska Wildlife Tour is a very popular tour and it is priced the same as many of our competitors. The value of the tour comes in the form of the narration and information that we provide on the tours. The only way to get this is from an experienced & knowledgeable local Alaskan guide. We hate to see that you did not see a value from this tour. Yes, you can rent a car and visit the center at your own leisure, and many people do but most miss out the unique things that make the Turnagain Arm so unique without having a guide. As for petting animals, these animals are in captivity and are still considered wild and should not be petted for many obvious reasons. Again, thank you for taking the time to review us and also for visiting Alaska!

Albert was phenomenal. He has so.much knowledge. He let our group take as much time as needed. Once seeing that we had.interest in the bore tide he found a pull off.on the turnagain arm, checked the tide charts and let us sit for 30-45 minutes to watch the tide come in. Our tour went like 1.5 hours over the slotted time and not once we're we rushed. Most guides would want to hutty and finish to go home for the day, but not Albert. Top notch...... Thanks so much for giving us a great tour.

This spring i had the opportunity to spend another month in Alaska. As usual i relied on Planet Earth Adventures (who are the most professional tourguides i ever met) again to help me plan some great daytours. As it was early in the season there were not too many tourits yet, except for some who were spending a couple of days in Anchorage while on a cruise. I optioned for the Portage Glacier Cruise and the Alaska Wildlife Center. You can either do these in separate (half day) trips or combine them in a full day trip. I can very much recommend the all day tour (if you have the time of course) The trip starts in Anchorage and it takes you , what i think is one of the most beautiful drives in Alaska, along Turnagain Arm. On the way to your final destination several stops are made on the way over and you might have a good chance to spot some real Alaskan wildlife like dallsheep, moose, belugas and yes we were so lucky we even spotted a big grizzly walking on the mudflats of the Cook Inlet. As for the Portage Glacier Cruise you have to keep to a firm schedule , so stops can be shorter, but don't worry, ont the way back there's plenty more time to make any stop you might have missed. And Planet Earth Adv. is not on a "tight" schedule. So depending, on the weather you might even get some extra bonusses like a stop at Potters Marsh (a refugee for migratory birds) , or on a clear day they may take you up to Flattop Mountain where on a clear day you can see as far as Denali. After a nice cruise you go to the Alaska Wildlife Center. One of my favourite places to get a great close up of brown bears, black bears, wolves, moose, caribou, bisons, .... You get all the time you need to observe the animals and to take your pics. No rush at all. That's what i like so much about Planet Earth. A great tip is to ask the guide to make a stop at the Alpine Bakery where they have the most delicious blueberry fritters anyone could ever imagine. Seriously, i'm still drewling just by thinking of them (and i usualy don't like anything sweet) As i was in Anchorage for a month and i had no travelling plans this time(just visiting friends) , believe it or not , i did the combined tour a couple of times, just because i liked it so much ... and each and every tour i still got to see new things. Depending on the weather, the wildlife, ... That's what makes this so interesting. So next time i'm pretty sure this trip will be back on my itinerary.

After ten days in Alaska, doing a lot of various tours and activities, Matt was our favorite, most fun, most personable, and most informative tour guide. There were some other great ones, but Matt was a star. From the onset of the trip, you knew Matt loved Alaska and sharing all about it with his guests. He talked about the geography, history, and lifestyle of the area. He answered questions on a wide range of topics as we traveled to the Wildlife Center. Once there, he knew to take us straight to the bears. We arrived just in time to hear the bear expert’s talk, and the bears were out and about expecting to eat soon. The sanctuary mainly houses orphaned and injured animals that could not be released back into the wild. They are living in large paddocks, not cages, and appear well cared for. Besides the bear, we saw bison, moose, elk, reindeer, caribou, foxes, a porcupine, a lynx, an owl, coyotes, a wolf, and a bald eagle. We stopped for a tasty lunch at a cute cafe in Girdwood before returning to Anchorage. A super fun day!
