    If you have never seen a glacier before and you would like to experience these stunning ice giants a little bit closer, come to the breathtaking area of Skaftafell. Skaftafell is located in Vatnajökull national park, the filming location of movies like Batman Begins, Interstellar and the Game of Thrones series. To maximize the time spent on ice, we drive all the way to the terminus of Falljökull glacier in our 4×4 truck. Before you step on to the ice you will learn the proper way to put on and use the provided glacier gear. We aim to spend around one and a half hour on the ice, exploring moulins, crevasses and more other-wordly formations. Along the way your guide will share ineresting facts about these formations and the origins of the glacier as well as interesting local stories.

We had an amazing time on our “extra small group” tour hiking a glacier!! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and experienced. She even helped my brother, who has balance issues, on the glacier the whole time.

We went on the 3:30 tour and it was nice because a lot of the other tours were leaving at that point. Our guide also took us away from other tour groups so it felt very private. She even helped us with a fun photo shoot for everyone making it look like we were doing some serious ice climbing! I feel so bad that I forget her name because she was amazing.

Make sure you have sturdy hiking boots with ankle support. My hiking shoes were soft and not compatible with the crampons but I was able to rent hiking boots for 1000 ISK.

Overall, I definitely recommend. The small group felt almost private since we were only a group of 8.

Magical experience and tasty glacier water 🏔️😎

Hiking up the glacier in such a small group was a magical experience. Not only could we enjoy the calmness and quiet to ourselves, but it was so easy to talk to our guide Oddur who was amazing at keeping us alert, entertained and gave us plenty of information about the glacier and answered all of our questions.
I definitely recommend booking a small group tour with Melrakki and ask for a time where less people are on the glacier, if your availability allows!

Camminare sul ghiacciaio con un gruppo così piccolo è stata un'esperienza magica. Siamo riusciti non solo a goderci la calma e silenzio, ma è stato facilissimo parlare con la nostra guida Oddur che è stato fantastico a mantenerci all'erta, interessati e ci ha dato molte informazioni sul ghiacciaio e risposto alle nostre molte domande.
Consiglio caldamente di prenotare un gruppo piccolo con Melrakki e di chiedere un orario con meno altri gruppi sul ghiacciaio, se potete essere flessibili!

An absolute must! Our guide was incredible, and he taught us so much information. He was super cognizant about how everyone was feeling, and he made sure to balance hiking with information breaks in the cold rainy weather to ensure we didn't get too cold. The small size of the group was perfect and as an added bonus, we were able to drive right up to the base of the glacier unlike other tours that had to park farther away and walk/hike 30-ish minutes to get to the base. This means we got to spend much more time on the glacier itself. We selected the afternoon tour, and the coolest part about it was that we were the only 8 people on the entire glacier at the end! Of course this might not always be the case.

Great guide! Francesca was incredible. She took us further up and was so sweet she even emailed each of us her recommendations for the remainder of our trip. The actual hike was such an incredible experience. Highly recommend abs recommend an earlier time slot when there are less people on the glacier.

Very memorable experience!
We did the Vatnajökull glacier hike with Katerina as our guide. It was an extra small group with just my husband and I and two others. We were driven right to the starting point of the hike and didn't need to waste time walking from the parking spot where most of the larger tour groups start from.

Katerina was a charismatic and knowledgeable guide that gave us lots of interesting information about the glacier and surrounding area. The walk itself was not difficult and one of the most visually stunning landscapes I've ever seen. This glacier won't be here in all its glory for much longer and I would highly recommend booking a tour through Melrakki Adventures to go and see it!

The best part of our trip!

My friend and I had the best time on our tour and this was definitely our favorite experience in the 8 days we spent driving around Iceland. Our tour guide was really fun, a fantastic communicator, taught us so much about the glacier and surrounding area. There were only 4 of us in total which felt so much nicer than the other groups of 12+ that we saw nearby. I would highly recommend Melrakki and their team!

Amazing Experience in Glacier

Before choosing this glacier tour company, I looked at several other companies and Melrakki appeared the most honesty, with a fair price and a company that focuses on delivering the best experience, with small groups and more complete tours.
On tour, my expectation was exceeded in every way. I had an amazing experience on the glacier with Franzy, our fantastic tour guide, she has a vast knowledge about glaciers, focuses on our safety, and is a very nice person.
Melrakki drives you closer to the glacier than other companies, so you have more time to walk.
Another big highlight is Melrakki's honesty. My original tour was hike + ice cave, but as no ice cave was formed, they change my tour to just hike and reversed the difference.
I highly recommend Melrakki, take your tours with them and you won't regret it.

A real highlight of our trip to Iceland was our small group tour with Melrakki adventures, from 10am to about 3:30 on a clear and sunny day on Oct 1 (our nicest, warmest, clearest in our 12 days in Iceland) – only 5 of us were on the tour, happily, the 3 of us and one nice couple. We took a bumpy Jeep ride from the Skaftafell airport area to the glacier parking, with Francisca as our driver and guide. We were each given crampons, ice pick/axes, helmets, and harnesses, and she instructed us on how to use them. We felt so lucky not to be in one of the larger groups (which we were able to avoid, but did run into a few times on and around the glacier). We had incredible scenery (especially under clear blue skies!), good information provided by Francisca, a lovely hike up and onto parts of the stunning glacier, into crevasses and ice caves. We enjoyed doing “Viking pushups” to taste from the glacial stream, stopping for picnic lunch sitting on the glacier while being visited by two ravens who begged for crumbs, and took hundreds of pictures. We almost didn’t do this, as we weren’t sure we had enough time before returning to Selfoss that evening, but are SO GLAD we did, as it was one of the BEST things we did in Iceland! Highly recommend Francisca and Melrakki! Thanks! We hope to go back!

My favorite experience in Iceland so far (and I’ve been multiple times). This glacier hike was exhilarating, beautiful and Kallia, our tour guide, was the best! The hike itself was on the moderate/east side - and Kallia did a great job pausing, allowing picture taking and just chatting with us at moments when breaks were needed after steep inclines. We all felt super safe. This tour was perfect - can’t say enough good things!!

The glacier itself was breathtaking - it was snowing and raining but we enjoyed every second of it. Dress appropriately! Run, don’t walk. This tour company is awesome and the extra small group (there were 3 of us) is how you should do it.

Brilliant- definitely worth doing the small group

We did this tour in October and really enjoyed it. You park up at an airbase close to the glacier and are provided with all of the equipment you will need before getting in a 4x4 that takes you to the glacier. There was six people in our group, which was a lovely size. The glacier was stunning, but also really educational, I learnt lots about Glaciers and how they are formed and changing. I can imagine it being really useful for children studying geography at school!

We spent a couple of hours on the glacier, and we went at our pace which was great. Well worth paying the extra for a small group experience- as we were leaving the glacier we saw some very large groups arriving and I’m not sure how much you would get to see in a group that size.
