Overall this 7 night trip was outstanding for seeing the beautiful western islands and getting the opportunity to see what the non-city life is like for Fijians. The cruise staff works to ensure you understand Fijian culture expectations, provides historical background, extends warm hospitality and outstanding personal service, and strives to ensure everyone’s wellbeing and safety during water, land based & shipboard activities.

The food served is very good and varied. The bar servers seek to please. The on board staff work as a seamless team to get the job done (their on board & nationally recognized marine biologist, Amos Daniel, also supports the working crew, assists in the bar, and dances with the staff during cultural demonstrations).

Water based excursions for dives, snorkeling and beach time is well coordinated and again, safety is paramount. Glass bottom boat operator, Ice Iskulathan Amos, uses dry wit and humor while giving clear to understand instructions after gaining all on board his boat’s attention with a loud and hearty “Bula!” All staff involved with excursions are constantly scanning the group for indications of any need for assistance.

Accommodations on board are pleasant. The ship is older and the cabins are basic yet functional. Realistically, you are in your cabin to change clothes and sleep on this cruise because they have you on the go from breakfast until after dinner which ends around 8:30pm (with the option to stay in the lounge area or various decks for several hours while listening to live music).

The cruise is also a wonderful social experience. You meet people from all over the world on board and truly build a camaraderie with other guests and the staff quickly.

My wife and I hope for the opportunity to have another adventure on the Reef Endeavor in the future. The 7 days aboard were one of the highlights of our 6 week South Pacific adventure.

Extraordinary vacation aboard the Reef Endeavour, Fiji. What a treat it was to spend time cruising the Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands of Fiji. Captain Ian and his crew exceeded all expectations with service, entertainment, food, cultural experiences, diving, snorkeling and beaches. The Fijians are such lovely, warm and welcoming people. We experienced a Kava ceremony, a Fijian Church service and school visits. Ilisani did a beautiful job coordinating our daily activities and providing us with a schedule for the day. Captain Ian and crew took us to some of the most beautiful coral reefs and beaches in the world. We had daily information sessions, with Amos, about the coral reefs we were visiting. My husband was thrilled to get his dive certificate during our week long stay. We had a wonderful cultural experience of song and dance from the crew on our last night. Many thanks to Captain Ian and the Reef Endeavour crew for making this an unforgettable experience!

We did the 3 night then 4 night Yasawa Cruise with an extended family group in July.
We can highly recommend the 7 night option - 3 or 4 nights would not have been enough.
The best bits;
small boat can get in close so you get to places a larger boat couldn't
Easy to get onto the tender - dry transfer as the small boat is lifted out of the water each time
Food - excellent - and accommodated dietary requirements
Location - warm crystal clear water, amazing coral and fish - where most other tourists don't get to, plus going to villages and seeing village life - a great side of Fiji
Staff - make the trip. Could not fault. Being a small boat you get to 'know' the staff - and they are friendly, engaging, and knowledgable. They are a huge asset.

It is worth noting the boat is 20+ years old -it is maintained but a little dated. However look past the minor issues and enjoy everything on offer. If you want a perfect flashy boat then you may be disappointed - if you want to enjoy yourself you will enjoy the trip!

We went on the Reef Endeavour 7 day Yasawa Island Cruise at the end of March 2018 and had a wonderful time and great service.

Before booking our holiday we had done some research on a Fijian trip and this seemed to suit our requirements best. We are retired but still active, although acknowledging that we are very much tourists we still like to think that we can experience a little of local culture and understand a bit about how a country runs while taking part in some light physical activity. Sitting by the pool or on a beach all day on such a long haul trip seems pointless, Spain is so much a better option for that sort of holiday when you live in the UK.

First impressions of Fiji were a bit mixed. As soon as we arrived at Nadi Airport after an overnight flight we had the soon to be familiar huge Fijian welcome and offer of assistance from airport staff, which quickly established that Captain Cook Cruises no longer have an office at the airport so we couldn’t check in with them there but this would be absolutely no problem. An agreed price taxi was organised to take us to Denarau Island where we were staying the first night. As we drove through downtown Nadi it all seemed a bit dishevelled and disorganised but then as we entered Denarau Island the stellar opposite, security guards and manicured golf courses, I didn’t feel that comfortable with either. We arrived at Palms Denarau and were checked in. This is an excellent choice for a pre cruise stay as the Port is just across the car park. The next day check in at the port went smoothly as did the complimentary drink at Rhum-Ba while we waited to board.

On board all the crew were incredibly helpful and friendly, helped by the ship only being about half full so you got very personal service. The cabins are compact, and ours functioned as it should but we heard anecdotes from others of leaks and noisy air conditioning which resulted in moves. This is not the latest huge luxury cruise liner so ongoing maintenance is understandable in such ships. Our cabin was close to the anchor chain locker, we were in no doubt when the ship was on the move but I have no problem getting back to sleep and quite enjoyed this interruption. The food was tasty, delivered in varying formats and in ample quantity. Alcoholic drinks were priced fairly and the tea and coffee (bean to cup) available all day and night.

We were the only British on board, most of our fellow passengers were Australian, who were very friendly and welcoming as were the other nationalities. Most were couples or small family groups.

We didn’t dive but very much enjoyed the twice daily reef snorkelling sessions. The island trips were varied in content, some at a nominal small charge to go to the islanders. The ship didn’t go that far as the islands aren’t that far spread, I think one voyage between anchorages took 12 minutes. As the 7 day cruise is split into two, a 3 day one and a 4 day one, you have a morning back at Denarau, where complimentary trips are offered. I highly recommend the Mud Pool. Eight of us went and laughed a lot. The evening entertainment was provided by the crew, great singers, sometimes with passengers joining in and of course there were the Kava ceremonies.

Disembarkation went smoothly despite a storm necessitating use of tenders. They offer complimentary transfers to Denarau resorts or the airports. As our flight out was not until the evening their transport company kindly took us over to the Gateway Hotel where we spent the day, the Gateway Hotel looked after our luggage and drove us back to the Airport although it is easily walkable.

In summary a wonderful way to see several Fijian Islands, do a lot of snorkelling and enjoy the company of friendly fellow passangers.

Captain Cook Cruise Line – we looked for reviews on this company and also the Blue Lagoon Cruise Line and at that time there weren’t that many. We ended up choosing Captain Cook because of the large discount they were offering at the time.

Arriving in Fiji - The taxi from the airport to Denarau cost us $30 Fijian and of course there is no shortage of taxis.

The Palms – We chose this hotel because we wanted to be close to Port Denarau and be able to walk to the Port. The hotel, which we knew nothing about, was a pleasant surprise. It was modern and clean and the service was excellent. They even offered to drive us to the Port (which was walking distance). We would happily stay here again. ($AUD198.06 through Agoda website)

We did ask them for recommendations of a hotel close to the port and were given the following suggestions: Westin Fiji resort, Sofitel Resort, Hilton, Sheraton, Terraces Apartments and Radisson Blu, all of these with the exception of Terraces Apartments were a taxi ride away. We didn’t want anything too fancy, we just wanted somewhere to sleep for the one night and be able to walk across to the Port and so found The Palms and were extremely happy with that choice.

Dinner the night before departure

We wandered around the marina looking at all the different restaurants and there are many. We chose BoneFish Seafood Restaurant. The whole night was just lovely, we sat overlooking the water, it was a lovely balmy evening and we both had a beautiful meal of fresh fish. It was really one of the best meals we had in Fiji and reasonably priced compared to some of the other restaurants there.

Boarding

There is a lot of waiting around to board the ship. Everyone was given a voucher for a free tea, coffee or soft drink at the Rhum-Ba whilst we waited and waited. The staff at Rhum-Ba were far from efficient or friendly. The ships departure was delayed, I understand, because of a refrigeration issue. Anyway eventually, we set sail and were introduced to the crew and given keys to our cabin.

Cabins

The cabins were a great disappointment and on chatting with others on board everyone was of the same opinion. The ship is old and is in need of refurbishment. The cabins are tiny. Our cabin was described as an Ocean Stateroom – hmmm. It did take us a while to adjust and then we came to the conclusion that you don’t spend that much time in them, just getting changed, showering and sleeping so we came to terms with the difference between the photos and reality.

Cruise

We chose a 7 day cruise, which is a combination of the 3 day cruise and the 4 day cruise which meant on the 4th day everyone had to leave the ship to enable restocking and loading/off loading passengers. There are a choice of “day” trips to do, we chose the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, it was okay. If we did this again I would have done trip to the mud pools. The people who did this loved it.

The food on board was generally good with a couple of clunkers. The pastry chef was excellent. There was plenty of variety at breakfast and lunch. Dinners were sometimes buffet and sometimes a la carte. On the a la carte evenings some nights were allocated seating and on others you could choose who you sat with. Obviously this is to make you mix with more people and as a result of this we met some lovely people who we may not have interacted with otherwise. Whilst the food is included in the cost drinks are not and you do pay a premium for these. One way to reduce your bar bill is to order a bottle of wine rather than buy it by the glass; they will label the bottle for you to have whenever you please. Each day there is a different cocktail on special and there is generally one of the wines on special for the duration of the cruise.

Snorkelling was offered every day, most days twice. They had a dedicated snorkelling boat and safety is a high priority for them. For those who don’t want to snorkel there were beach activities and also glass bottom boat trips. They also offered diving. Or you could stay on board and relax. There is a pool but it's more like a plunge pool rather than a swimming pool.

We were surprised that the ship didn’t actually travel that far during the whole cruise. We expected it would steam through the night and we would wake up in a different place each morning, but jumps between locations were quite short.

The internet is hit and miss but I think they do warn you about that.

A few tips

A very useful tip is to take a few pegs with you as you need to hang your wet bathers on a line along the deck outside your cabin. Take at least 2 pair of bathers, some insect repellent as well as sunscreen.

One of our travel companions said she always took a box of coffee satchels on any cruise she did as you could always get hot water but the quality of the coffee varied greatly.

A couple of times there are village markets that you are able to visit on shore and you will need Fijian currency if you intend to buy anything.

Take a “tropical” outfit or 2 if you have them, there were 3 nights where this was appropriate and some had to rush to the onboard shop to buy something. One “dressy” outfit for the Captains Dinner is suggested as well.

The crew on the ship were wonderful, very personable with great senses of humour (although not so much when Australia beat Fiji in the rugby league world cup).

You have to make allowances for the fact that some things will happen in “Fiji time”.

Our expectations

The condition of the ship did not meet our expectations however we never felt that it was unsafe. In pretty much every other aspect our expectations were met or exceeded. Would we do it again? In a flash, in fact in putting this review together makes us want to book another cruise.

Thanks so much for the very comprehensive review. We have already bought some pegs for loan from the Purser! Our ship is celebrating 22 years this year and is under constant maintenance. We have spent nearly $1mil in the dock this month. Thanks for noticing that keeping you safe is our highest priority. Wifi is reliant on the mobile phone network so only available at anchor when within range of a tower. The Mamanuca and Yasawa islands are very close together so steaming is limited offering plenty of shore time. We do offer longer itineraries where more steaming is at night to Fiji's remote north and the Lau group. Thanks again for raising some great points, hope to welcome you aboard soon.

We took a family party of 27 people aged from
“old” to 5 year olds. From the very first email enquiry to the final Isa Lei sung on deck as we concluded the cruise everything was done to perfection.Overriding was the Fijian friendliness , warmth and sincere desire to help and please. The ship is a little dated but has been refurbished and is comfortable. The meals plentiful, varied and beautifully presented. The onboard crew went out of their way to make us feel welcome and a part of their family.
The itinerary and islands visited could not have been better. For those of us who have been to Nadi all our lives this cruise presented the real Fiji.
Our family have had numerous cruises on major cruise lines. If you want crowds, having to stand in
Line , casinos and professional entertainment this cruise is not for you. Nevertheless we encourage you to try an alternative!!!
We will be back to enjoy another lifetime memory

We took the 7 day Mamauca and Yasawa Islands cruise from 22/06/19 to 29/06/19 and thoroughly enjoyed it from go to whoa. We were welcomed onboard by the crew with singing, music, drinks and lunch, before we departed on calm waters with very little motion. Our C deck room was small, but with plenty of cupboard / drawer space, good a/c for the tropical humidity. The 1st 3 days were in the Mamaucas with excellent beaches and weather, and OK coral with 51 crew and 48 passengers. For the last 4 days on the Yasawas it went up to 90 passengers, with far better coral but worse beaches and weather. For the entire the time you could not fault any of the crew. The food was very good with more than enough choices. Lots of activities, predominately snorkeling, which catered for beginners off the beach to deep water with times up to 40 min or shorter. Each day offered a different island with optional village visits. Scuba diving experiences ranged from the beginner to those qualified to go into deep water. There are some real characters on board who wear many hats and provide good entertainment. It would not suit young party goers, and is more suited to middle aged and older couples, but the odd young family appeared to also have a great time. All evenings were accompanied some entertainment, followed by laid-back music, but you always had the option of the deck for a quiet drink and chat with fellow passengers.

My family of 8 spent the week of Christmas on the Reef Endeavour with Captain Cook Cruises. Most of us have travelled with Captain Cook Cruises previously. This trip did not disappoint!
Our group was aged between 17 - 81. There was something for everyone to do. Scuba diving, snorkelling, hikes, school visits, village visits, beach time! There was always something to do - or nothing to do, if that's what you wanted.
The cabins on board are compact and perfectly adequate. No giant staterooms on board but to be honest, we were only in our room to shower and sleep.
The crew are outstanding! From the moment we walked on board, nothing was too much trouble.
The food is great with a selection of some buffets, a la carte and a fantastic Christmas dinner on the open top deck of the ship.
We had cabins on B deck which have a window and door open to the outer deck, but have also stayed on D deck, if your budget is a little tighter. These cabins open into an inner hallway, but the rooms are very similar.
We will be back for another cruise. Very happy travellers :)

We recently returned from a 7 day cruise of the Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands on the Reef Endeavour. What a fantastic experience. The crew, as well as the guests, were exceptional and made our trip from Ontario, Canada one of the most memorable of a lifetime. If you enjoy snorkelling everyday, many twice a day, then this cruise is for you - some of the most beautiful coral gardens we have ever seen. The ship holds a maximum of 150 and during the first 4 days of our trip, we were 50 and then 38 the last 3 days. Learning about the Fijian culture is part of the experience, both on board as well as the tours of 3 different villages.
