- familyadventurer20170 contributionsA fantastic food and cultural experience in PenangWe did a private Custom Tour of George Town with Simply Enak and it was simply brilliant! We'd booked a cruise from Singapore to Thailand with a stop in Penang - only to realise our day in Penang was Christmas Day, a public holiday. Oops! I was terribly worried nothing would be open, but our guide Wei Shen had everything in hand, taking us to some brilliant places we would never have found on our own. All the food he brought us to try was incredible, from Char Kway Teow straight out of the wok on a street corner to refined Penang Laksa and Michelin-starred samosas eaten as we walked along the street. As our group included children, Wei Shen also arranged for us to try some local non-alcoholic drinks, including nutmeg juice, which was delicious! As well as fantastic food experiences, Wei Shen took us through temples, kept us away from the crowds as we explored one of the Clan Jetties and along the way he showed us the street art for which Penang is famed. He also arranged for us to eat inside an air conditioned restaurant when the heat got too much (where we sampled the most delicious dosa). He also kept a close eye on the time and the traffic, arranging a car to ensure we were back at the Cruise Terminal in good time for departure. This tour turned out to be a highlight of our cruise - many thanks to Simply Enak for going the extra mile to find a guide for us on a public holiday and to Wei Shen for designing and delivering it for us!!Written 6 January 2025

I liked having a variety of cuisines from the various cultures of Penang. Wei Shen also shared some of the history and culture of Penang as we passed by places of significance. Well worth it!!Written 25 March 2024
- dumpling_180 contributionsFantastic Day with SorayaEven though we have travelled to Penang numerous times over the years we learnt so much on this tour with the delightful Soraya. As a Penang local and licenced Tour Guide, Soraya gave us great insights into Penang's fascinating history, multi-culture, architecture and best of all - food! Over the course of the tour walking through George Town she fed us so much that we were bursting. Everything was delicious and her choices of meals to showcase Penang's diverse food culture were perfect. Soraya was interesting and engaging and font of information about Penang. She showed us so many sights and points of interest, well beyond what we expected. We had a great day and would not hesitate to recommend this tour.Written 19 March 2023

- Compass6104740 contributionsOne of the best tours I have ever been onWe had such a wonderful tour with Lee. Lee was very well informed, personable and eager to make sure our experience was fabulous—which it was. We were introduced to the most amazing, traditional food and the various different cultures that reside within Georgetown. Lee was extremely knowledgeable in all of these areas. I thoroughly recommend Lee as your guide and also would recommend that you take this tour as soon as you arrive to get your bearings and understand the cultures, customs and the area that you are visiting.Written 5 January 2023
- 254maha0 contributionsInsightful and Fulfilling History + Food Tour!Absolutely amazing tour! Suraiya was the sweetest tour guide and provided such great insights into the history of the neighborhood. The food was absolutely amazing...be prepared to eat! And don't be shy to mention things you'd like to try out, there may be room in the budget for it!Written 24 December 2022
- Ruchiralm0 contributionsFantastic food extravaganza! This was one of the nicest way to learn about the history and culture of Georgetown, Penang! Our guide, dear Lee Su Li, (Bruce Lee’s sister, of course) was very friendly and funny and gave us a really personalised tour. We are a foodie family and all of us, even our usually shy teenager stuffed ourselves to the max and got great local info about the ingredients used in the various variations of the dishes. Loved the whole experience! Highly recommend it, and especially her as a guide!Written 19 December 2022

- EatsGreatFood0 contributionsDecent, but no value for moneyThe guide was thoughtful enough to tailor the tour for us as we didnt want Indian food, so we got to sample Char Kway Teow, Laksa and Chendol. That said, for what we paid, we didnt feel we ate enough varieties of food. The history walk was interesting and he had some interesting anecdotes. Overall ok, but we have experienced better in other parts of the world.Written 4 May 2022
- Lovethyextra0 contributionsThe best tour and guide we could ask forWe had a fantastic time exploring the streets of Penang. We ate along the way and learned about the history of Penang and It’s food. The culture of the area Is amazing, especially the clan houses. I would definitely book again.Written 14 April 2020
- hirokoby0 contributionsHighly Recommended TourI have taken a number of Walking Tours but this tour was one of the best ! Mark was very punctual, knowledgeable about the history of Penang and he knew what to recommend as to the different ethnic cuisines. It turned out that our tour was small and that made it even better as Mark was accommodating to make few changes here and there. The food was fantastic with local Indian, Malay/Indian and Chinese. He ordered just the right amount for us and I enjoyed all the dishes. The story of how he grew up in a certain neighborhood and the family history was also enlightening as he explained Penang's very colorful history. If you plan a trip to Penang or have been here but not taken Mark's tour, I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Penang. I took a friend who has lived here for six years and even he was amazed and pleased with Mark's tour.Written 27 January 2020

Su Li was incredibly knowledgable and helpful during our food discovery tour of Georgetown. We visited Kapitan Keling Mosque and Chew Jetty to learn about the history of the settlers of Penang and sampled delicious local food like wonton mee and char kway teow there. We visited Armenian Street Market and Little India to try cendol and chana bhatura respectively while Su Li showed us hidden murals and tols us about the mish-mash of cuisines in Penang. We ended our tour at the fabulous China House close to bursting. Highly recommend this whirlwind tour for a delectable sampling of Georgetown food and history!

Everything you would want in a good food tour. Lee was engaging with everyone, knowledgeable of the local areas, culture and food. Four hours went very quickly. The food was from each of the different cultures in Penang. There was plenty to eat and drink. Well worth doing particularly at the beginning of a visit to Penang to be able to understand the place and its people.

This was a very professional and engaging tour. Our guide Lee made the experience of walking and eating around Penang so much fun. Many things we learned and experienced were very much local knowledge and experience. I would recommend this to anyone looking to get orientated around Georgetown and experience a nice variety of local foods.

We enjoyed seeing different parts of Georgetown back alleys that we typically wouldn’t have wandered to during our stay, and appreciated Ron’s (our guide) local knowledge as he grew up here. Our first of three tastings (Malaysian high tea) was delicious but we felt the Chinese and Indian was a slight let down in that we had tasted Pad Thai and Tandoori Chicken many times, versus more unusual foods on the street carts. Overall it was a good way to see Georgetown and if time is short, I would recommend doing this food/culture tour to get a good sense of the many cultures crammed into this small
UNESCO area.

We were excited to experience the four hour "Eat Drink Georgetown" Food Tour in Penang, as the city is renown for the wonderful culinary experiences offered around every corner. Gary, our guide, was very pleasant and well informed and kept us entertained as we wandered the streets of Georgetown. But this tour, at its core, is a walking tour and not a food tour. We have taken Food Tours throughout the world and usually the breath, quantity, and quality of the food has been very satisfying. Not to focus on the tour price, but for RM300 per person in Penang, you can have a feast. While the price of the included food should not be the sole barometer by which a Tour is judged, the food could not have cost more than RM30 per person to the Tour operator. Food Tours are meant to introduce the participant to the diversity of food choices in a city, and quantity should not be the ultimate measure, but the participant should not finish the Tour exhausted and hungry.

Disappointed! We were expecting a culinary tour of various different aspects of Malaysian inspired cooking. Food that we were unlikely to have tasted before. What we got was a culture tour headed by our tour guide, Lee, although enthusiastic, treated the whole experience as though it was a school outing, asking questions & not continuing until she had received the answer she wanted, even giving us a paperwork exercise! Our first taste was of chicken & beef satay, I am sure anyone on a flight to the far east would have sampled this on the plane! 4 food stops on a trek in 30 degree heat around the city in 4 hours was more of a trial, not an enjoyable experience. Luckily the 4 others on the trip were likeminded & we ended up saving the day with some drinks and laughs in the China House. The description needs to be changed to emphasise that the majority of this tour is cultural rather than culinary.

Absolutely the best food experience!
We had a tour with Wei Shein, who paced the entire excursion perfectly. We enjoyed a wonderful mix of culture, food, and history as we explored old George Town.
No one left hungry or felt like we missed out on anything. We visited places of worship, admired street art, sampled food from the best street vendors, and met the families living on Chew Clan Jetty.
I highly recommend this tour!

Thank you so much for your sharing and appreciation for the culture, food, history, and stories of Georgetown. That mix is exactly what we do more than just a food, walking tour.
That has been our mission since walking and touring the area for 11 years. Kudos that you even had an engagement and understanding the livelihoods of the Clan jetty folks.

The tour consists of a few different cuisines which covers a lot of popular local foods - would recommend if you don't have much time in Penang and want to try lots of different things.
Our guide Lee was an absolute delight - we tried delicious local foods but also got to know more about the history and culture of Penang thanks to her. She was a pleasure to walk and eat with and everyone in the group had a great time thanks to her.

Hello,
I am planning to visit Penang end of Jan 2020 and would like to join this tour as a "solo". Is it possible, as when I tried to book, it would not allow me to book for 1.
Thanks.

Besides English, does the tour guide speak other languages such as Cantonese? I'll be visiting with my parents and they will enjoy the tour even more if Cantonese is offered.

Hi, I have booked this tou for my husband & I - on the booking form it states that this activity includes pick up from accommodation & asks for the name of our hotel (which is the PARKROYAL).
On the tour information that I printed with the voucher it says “Exclusions: Hotel pick up & Drop off” can this be clarified please.
Written 30 April 2018
Not sure if this is too late but we walked to the meeting point. I’d get in contact with him by email as he’s very helpful. Not sure where the Parkroyal is but if it’s out of Georgetown ask them to get you a Grab taxi
