Penang Food and a Dash of culture experience
Loved the tour. The small group was great and our guide was fun and knowledgeable. Wei Shen made the tour very entertaining. I liked having a variety of cuisines from the various cultures of Penang. Wei Shen also shared some of the history and culture of Penang as we passed by places of significance. Well worth it!!

    Fantastic Day with Soraya
Even though we have travelled to Penang numerous times over the years we learnt so much on this tour with the delightful Soraya. As a Penang local and licenced Tour Guide, Soraya gave us great insights into Penang's fascinating history, multi-culture, architecture and best of all - food! Over the course of the tour walking through George Town she fed us so much that we were bursting. Everything was delicious and her choices of meals to showcase Penang's diverse food culture were perfect. Soraya was interesting and engaging and font of information about Penang. She showed us so many sights and points of interest, well beyond what we expected. We had a great day and would not hesitate to recommend this tour.

One of the best tours I have ever been on
We had such a wonderful tour with Lee. Lee was very well informed, personable and eager to make sure our experience was fabulous—which it was. We were introduced to the most amazing, traditional food and the various different cultures that reside within Georgetown. Lee was extremely knowledgeable in all of these areas. I thoroughly recommend Lee as your guide and also would recommend that you take this tour as soon as you arrive to get your bearings and understand the cultures, customs and the area that you are visiting.

Insightful and Fulfilling History + Food Tour!
Absolutely amazing tour! Suraiya was the sweetest tour guide and provided such great insights into the history of the neighborhood. The food was absolutely amazing...be prepared to eat! And don't be shy to mention things you'd like to try out, there may be room in the budget for it!

    Fantastic food extravaganza!
This was one of the nicest way to learn about the history and culture of Georgetown, Penang! Our guide, dear Lee Su Li, (Bruce Lee’s sister, of course) was very friendly and funny and gave us a really personalised tour. We are a foodie family and all of us, even our usually shy teenager stuffed ourselves to the max and got great local info about the ingredients used in the various variations of the dishes. Loved the whole experience! Highly recommend it, and especially her as a guide!

Penang street tour with young kids
We had a great guide who tailored a walking tour to fit our needs, including seeing things that would interest the kids and making sure they found lots of snacks that appealed to them. Highlight recommend this company!

Decent, but no value for money
The guide was thoughtful enough to tailor the tour for us as we didnt want Indian food, so we got to sample Char Kway Teow, Laksa and Chendol. That said, for what we paid, we didnt feel we ate enough varieties of food. The history walk was interesting and he had some interesting anecdotes. Overall ok, but we have experienced better in other parts of the world.

    Highly Recommended Tour
I have taken a number of Walking Tours but this tour was one of the best ! Mark was very punctual, knowledgeable about the history of Penang and he knew what to recommend as to the different ethnic cuisines. It turned out that our tour was small and that made it even better as Mark was accommodating to make few changes here and there. The food was fantastic with local Indian, Malay/Indian and Chinese. He ordered just the right amount for us and I enjoyed all the dishes. The story of how he grew up in a certain neighborhood and the family history was also enlightening as he explained Penang's very colorful history. If you plan a trip to Penang or have been here but not taken Mark's tour, I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Penang. I took a friend who has lived here for six years and even he was amazed and pleased with Mark's tour.

    More than a food tour
This was my first food tour and in a place with so many incredible options it was a great way to try lots of famed penang specialities from places that locals recommend. We did the night tour which was hosted by local resident Ron. Great guy, incredibly knowledgeable about George town and Penangs history and helped us to understand the area and how this translates into a melting pot of exceptional food and rich cultures, living side by side in harmony. Enjoyed visiting the different areas and being afforded a more local's view than I'd have had as a tourist. Ron was incredibly patient and generous with his time, answering the hroups questions and sharing his vast knowledge. Final shout out to Mark, who Ron informed us created the cocktail we drank at our last stop. It was so good we stayed for a few more after the tour had ended.

New Food Tour: SECRETS OF KL NIGHTLIFE, STREET ART, COCKTAILS & CRAFT BEERS!
By some stroke of luck, our tour was lead by Pauline, the founder of the company - an entrepreneur with fantastic local food connections and someone who really enjoys her job, if you can even bring herself to call it a job. A little background: It was our first time in Malaysia and having passing through Singapore and Kuching on the way into Kuala Lumpur, this food tour was what we needed with only 6 hours to explore KL. Because it was the day after New Year (Jan 2), a few of the shops were closed because they had been open for tourism during NYE and NY, but Pauline spent some time scoping out what was and wasn't open beforehand so as to set our expectations. A partial list of the items we enjoyed during the tour: - Peanut Pancake (which we've never seen anywhere else) - Yin Yang (Hokkaido) Noodles - Cantonese Style Noodles - Love Letters (special for New Years) - Fruit Stall (yum Mangosteens) - Indian Roti - Walnut or Almond Cookie - Cocktail or Locally Infused Craft Beer *** What we didn't get a chance to eat was the Clay Pot Chicken As the title of the tour mentions, there is a good amount of culture, street art and local sights to complement the food, in case you start to fill up too quickly. Since this is a walking tour (no cars, or tuk tuks, or any other motorized vehicle), it is a great place to explore the district around Petaling Street on foot. Also, in our opinion, having now been to many urban centers in Asia, many of these urban centers do not come alive until the evening, so ambiance is also a factor when trying to experience KL at night.

We enjoyed seeing different parts of Georgetown back alleys that we typically wouldn’t have wandered to during our stay, and appreciated Ron’s (our guide) local knowledge as he grew up here. Our first of three tastings (Malaysian high tea) was delicious but we felt the Chinese and Indian was a slight let down in that we had tasted Pad Thai and Tandoori Chicken many times, versus more unusual foods on the street carts. Overall it was a good way to see Georgetown and if time is short, I would recommend doing this food/culture tour to get a good sense of the many cultures crammed into this small
UNESCO area.

Booked 4 hour food tour for two $218 AUD. Rang operator day before and on day to confirm booking and no answer. At 16:30 Ron turned up at an old church to our relief. Walked to a vegetarian Indian restaurant and shared some bread with 3 dips and shared a different bread with some chip peas. Cost RM $12 about $4 AUD. Walked street and spoke about Chinese buildings. Stopped at a Indian hawker and shared some curry chicken and bread. Cost RM $5 about $2 AUD. Then walked to the popular Chulia St and had a small plate each of Char Koay Teow shared a small plate oyster omelette and had a Malay coffee each. Cost RM $22 about $8 AUD. So in total tasted 5 small dishes and had a coffee RM $39 about $14 AUD. For a $218 AUD outlay what a ripoff. Food is cheap and everywhere in Georgetown. Never tried popular dishes like Assam laska, Rojak, Cendol, Nasi Lemak, Curry Mee, prawn fritter, or visit Chew Jetty which you would expect on a food tour. Dropped off at a bar for a rum cocktail - yuck at 19:45. So 4 hour food tour was actually under 3 and a half hours. Got better advice from hotel staff and locals. VERY DISAPPOINTED AVOID.

This was a very professional and engaging tour. Our guide Lee made the experience of walking and eating around Penang so much fun. Many things we learned and experienced were very much local knowledge and experience. I would recommend this to anyone looking to get orientated around Georgetown and experience a nice variety of local foods.

A food tour isn’t something I’d normally consider but after reading the positive reviews and we decided to commit and we couldn’t have been more surprised with how much we enjoyed it. The tour is well paced, personable and very easy going with some great historical and geographical info mixed in. I’d also recommend taking the tour at the beginning of visiting George Town to give you some useful information and confidence to visit some great eating places. Thank you Simply Enak for a fun few hours for myself and my family.

I have recently travelled on this tour, which was part food tour and part history tour. Our tour started late as we had two travellers who were not provided clear details on the meeting time and meeting point. Once started we headed to the first stop which was vegetarian indian, which was quite nice. The following tour or so was filled with a walking tour of Georgetown, with several stops and lots of stories told. We had two street style food stops which i didnt enjoy. We ended the tour with the cocktail bar, which was a nice way to end. I would recommend a general fitness level for this tour - including the right footwear. It would be great if the food choices were improved!

Disappointed! We were expecting a culinary tour of various different aspects of Malaysian inspired cooking. Food that we were unlikely to have tasted before. What we got was a culture tour headed by our tour guide, Lee, although enthusiastic, treated the whole experience as though it was a school outing, asking questions & not continuing until she had received the answer she wanted, even giving us a paperwork exercise! Our first taste was of chicken & beef satay, I am sure anyone on a flight to the far east would have sampled this on the plane! 4 food stops on a trek in 30 degree heat around the city in 4 hours was more of a trial, not an enjoyable experience. Luckily the 4 others on the trip were likeminded & we ended up saving the day with some drinks and laughs in the China House. The description needs to be changed to emphasise that the majority of this tour is cultural rather than culinary.

Never have I written a review so quickly, but the high standard of our tour guide was such that I felt it necessary.

Ronald took us on the most insightful and emotive city tour that I've ever been on. He was smart, witty and catered to our group's needs. A real asset to the company and we felt blessed to have met him. The food of Penang speaks for itself, but this city has layers and layers of secrets just asking to be peeled away.

Simply Enak as a company were very responsive to my questions and booking enquiry.

Highly recommended.

Great tour that is so much more than (amazingly tasteful) street food! Su Li made us feel comfortable from the very first moment. She guided us through the streets of historically rich George Town, Penang by telling us all we wanted to know about local customs, religion, history and of course the extraordinary street food that George Town has to offer. Adjustments for my girlfriend’s vegetarian needs were no problem (we know this can be challenging in Malaysia) and the flavors we tasted were suprising and diverse. Su Li took us to places we would never have gone to without her guidance, which is exactly what we were looking for when we booked the tour.

It is wonderful to see how different cultures and religions come together in such a small area and even more special to realize they have been living together in harmony for over 200 years. Would recommend this tour to everyone who is visiting Penang!

Ron was a wonderful host and filled the evening with wonderful stories and a history of Georgetown, but we weren’t informed that on Monday night many places are closed and food choices were limited. We started with southern Indian food which was delicious. The second choice was ok but the third was cold Indian curry and cold bread. We were offered one small bottle of water for two people and had to go find and buy additional water ourselves. The history tour was great but we were really looking forward to experiencing a variety of great food and we were disappointed with that aspect.

Without doubt one of the favourite experiences in Malaysia!

Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by our Guide Lee, who provided a friendly, informative and fun atmosphere. The tour was amazing due to Lee’s thoughtfulness, knowledge, enthusiasm and being flexible to take our time around the area and for that she deserves a special thanks.

I truly enjoyed walking through the streets of George Town while learning the history and eating delicious local food. The scenery was beautiful and it was lovely to walk in such a historic and peaceful environment. The Chinahouse restaurant at the end was a great way to end the tour with a glass of wine and a slice of cake.

Many thanks again and I recommend our guide Lee to everyone!
