- 318nd0 contributionsFunicularWe took the funicular to the top of the hill which was an experience in itself, although it takes less than 5 minutes. The Habitat experience is wonderful and we could have spent all day there. There are also bars and restaurants to enjoy.Written 23 January 2025
- veronikakhu0 contributionsMust visitChoose the right time to visit. Take express entry. Take buggy to explore. Don’t forget the umbrella. Must visit of Penang!!!Written 23 January 2025
- Sands_sun0 contributionsYou can do it if you have nothing to do in Penang.I was impressed with the funicular. There was nothing special but fresh air, another attraction will cost more money. Toilet and sitting areas are available . - Not suitable for elderly, because it has steps everywhere.Written 12 January 2025
- LostPatrol1230 contributionsWaste of Time.Got there was informed closed for maintenance.Lots of people waiting nothing on website saying closed.Usual F East incompetence.Written 5 January 2025
- 253SA0 contributionsThe views will be worth the waitIf you managed to brave the massive crowds to board the funicular, and made your way up to the top of Penang Hill, congratulations. You will be next rewarded by some of the best views of Georgetown, weather permitting. Although we had great sunny weather on the day of our visit, it was nevertheless cloudy as well, so a lot of the faraway views, especially the Penang Bridge, weren't that ideal. In addition to the views, there are also other important places to visit too, such as the Penang Hill Mosque and the Penang Hill Hindu temple, which are side-by-side each other.Written 30 December 2024
- Elcbee0 contributionsWorth it for the views.Greta fun. Best to book express if the budget allows - no queuing at busy times. A bit of a funfair at the top with lots of locals and their children trying out rides and amusements. We had a superb cake and afternoon tea at the David Brown café which was a respite from the crowds. Be sure to book your return trip - either 'Grab' or previously booked cab. I didn't, my phone died and all the booked cabs were ferrying cruise passengers etc. I ended up going to each cab in turn till one driver called his mate off his tea break!Written 23 December 2024
- 742harinders0 contributionsSee the sun rise, you can hike, take some snacks. So thankful to the grab driver we met. He advised us to go early to get the first train, avoid long queues and watch the sun as it rises. So glad we did, 11, 10 and 8 yr old. We had a car so drove and got there at 615. There were already about 20 people Infront of us. We bought our tickets on the same day within 5 minutes we reached the counter. And guess what, there is a special price for local Malaysians before 8 am you only pay 5rm for adults and children. Otherwise you pay 8rm and 16 rm. Unfortunately,I had to pay international price 30 rm return but my kids and husband were able to get the local price, being Malaysians. We got the first train up at 630am and stayed for two hours, even joined in the zumba class. What i didn’t know was you can even hike up there. There is a train stop half way. I was told it takes about one hour 30 minutes to get to the top. I am not sure how many kilometres it is but something that’s definitely on my list to do-as a hiker. No shops were open while we were there as it was early morning so it’s a good idea maybe to take some drinks with you. My kids got a bit hungry by that time so luckily I had some bread rolls that I picked up from 7-Eleven . I think food may be available from 9 am onwards. Lots of spots to take photos definitely go if you are going to visit Penang and there’s no need to book via a tour company you can do it all by yourself . The train journey is about 10 minutes in total.Written 16 December 2024
- SMcL-1-10 contributionsA must do when in Penang. We spent 5 hours on Penang Hill, mostly within the Habitat. Highlights are the bridge walkway, the circular canopy walk and the abundance of birds. The hill was covered in cloud until about 11am so there were no views of the straits, mainland or Georgetown. It was refreshingly cool with little humidity until the cloud lifted. Once the cloud lifted it became hot and humid quickly. As the path meanders around the summit of the hill through the forest the animals and birds are all around and easy to see. At the top station for the furnicular railway station there are cafe's, some stalls selling touristy stuff and entertainment for kids. There are viewing platforms with great views over the east of the island to the Straits of Melaka and beyond. The train is a great way to access the hill but booking in advance is recommended. Seats are not guaranteed and the carriages get very full at the peak times but the ride is only 4 minutes.Written 15 December 2024

- 19dreamer0 contributionsNot worth to visit! Bad management!!Went there with 85 years old parents. First wouldn’t allow us to buy express tickets then wouldn’t allow us to buy senior tickets because we are not locals, when asked if there is a place to parents to sit, staff just replied ask the staff at the front. So everywhere we went, we needed to explain and requested to let my parents to go through the 45 mins queue first as they can’t stand that long, then only 2 of them can go but we need to queue in the separate queue. We have been questioned by unfriendly staffs again & again why we didn’t have express ticket or senior tickets even they can see with their own eyes that my father has difficulties to walk. All in all, a place should be avoided with old people and tight schedule. Not a great experience at all.Written 18 November 2024
- khudri_johari0 contributionsNice! The parking down the hill was quite easy. You can just drop your family members first at the lobby before you park. The train tickets were affordable, but just buy the VIP tickets if you come during the peak season + you have elderlies and/or children with you. The journey up and down the hill was mesmerizing. Loved the staffs up on the hill as they were helpful. Personally, I found the tree top walk was the best part. Other than that, the usual jungle trekking was fun. The food court's fine; lots of options and the prices were affordable as well.Written 9 November 2024

- ehsw20230 contributionsPeaceful Morning, Pre-StormWe beat the crowds by arriving before 9:30 am, but the popular spot was already bustling. To minimize wait times, consider purchasing an express ticket. The breathtaking scenery did not disappoint, and we were fortunate to take in the stunning views just before a sudden storm rolled in, bringing wet weather. Timing was on our side. Tips: - Arrive early - Consider express ticket - Check weather forecast Highlights: Breathtaking scenery Challenge: Crowds and unexpected storm Rating suggestions: - 4/5 stars - Worth visiting, despite crowds - Spectacular views, but be weather-awareWritten 20 September 2024
- Mike_MCMLVII0 contributionsGet there early!Get there early and enjoy the cool breeze and lack of crowds. We arrived just after opening, there was no line for funicular tickets and we walked right on the the carriage. We leisurely walked the trails with nary a soul in sight. That secludedness lasted an hour or so before we started noticing a few more people here and there and that trend continued throughout the day and by afternoon it was starting to feel a little crowded. By about 2:00 P.M. we were tired and decided to go back down the hill. When we arrived at the upper station we were greeted by a huge crowd waiting in a very long line trying to get down too. I had purchased a standard ticket which was fine for the way up but I really didn't feel like waiting in that like. I went to the ticket booth and was able to upgrade our downhill tickets to "Express". We went to the express line and found no one there, we walked right up to where the carriage was going to stop and found a few express ticket holders there. The carriage soon arrived, we boarded, and were on our way back down the hill.Written 30 August 2024
- Mobile353189315920 contributionsIf you're not Malaysian, be prepared to wait ...The hill itself is a challenging 2 hour walk. We thought we'd be rewarded with an exceptional view, but it was incredibly foggy, so it's not really worth the hike. (Plus, it's a commercialised nightmare at the top). The funicular probably would have been a better option, BUT the tickets are not only more expensive for non-Malaysians, YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR A CERTAIN CARRIAGE IF YOU'RE NOT MALAYSIAN! How weird and backwards is that? Imagine that happening in the west, only westerners can go first.... This really soured the experience for us.Written 28 July 2024

This review is solely based on my experience and it may vary from other traveller...
Came in 2019 during my cruise stopover in penang and had a bad experience with the neverending queue and almost miss my cruise back home. Luckily i decide to upgrade my train ticket for the trip down and manage to get back to my cruise on time..
Funicular Train : 3/5
I made a return in october 2024. The neverending queue still seems to be an issue..This time around i bought "Express" return trip ticket as i have 4 elderly parents with me. Its definitely costly BUT we manage to skip the super long queue and we reach up in 10-15 mins instead of hours... the only downside is you are still sharing the spaces with normal tickets holder even though you are paying way more and on both way trip we got normal tix holder requesting seats from my elderly parent claiming they are with children..and will give bad looks when decline by my elderly parents who have mobility issue...so perhaps this could be an area for improvement..
Astaka Foodcourt 3/5
Came here after seeing videos of vendor selling shaves ice with fruits on social media..all i can say is from my honest opinion is it is over hype and could be quite costly..
Buggy Ride 3/5
Buggy ride cost RM30 for maximum 5 pax which will bring you sightseeing to a stretch of roads all the way to Kopi Hutan and return back to starting point. A trip that will take around 20mins to and fro if you dont stop at Kopi Hutan. If you decide to stop and have a coffee at Kopi Hutan do be reminded that there will be an additional surcharge of RM15 for the trip back... nothing much to see to be honest..
Kopi Hutan 3/5
Nothing special here except having a moka pot coffee in a middle of the jungle...will take a while to have buggy back to starting point as most buggy riders dont drop here..but there will be a man helping you to secure a tram back to the starting point but will take some time..
All in all i decided not to visit the habitat after Kopi Hutan as i think it did not suit my parents with mobility issues..we went down after spending around 1-2 hr at the top..would suit more to nature lovers in my opinion..
Be careful of the monkey who could get aggresive if you have food or drinks with you..

Come here on saturday around 10 am, we buy return ticket train/furnicullar for 30 MYR each person.
they also have the fast track lane and the price is doble and it will save your time when you get back from the hill (the queue is very long)
I think it’s less crowded than it used to be, because we went there on April (fasting month). I’ve been there 3 times.
We went there to see the habitat area. It offers the most authentic rainfores in Malay.
You can buy ticket online or onsite like us. For 1 person is 60 MYR and we get discount 20%.
Walk along the langur way canopy walk with nature view. And see the curtis crest tree top walk. Finish the journey in kommune.
The fresh air and trees surround the area. Walk along The curtis crest where you can see the city from above. The view is breathtaking.
You can see all the activities, how to get here and other stuff their website or if you want to explore the habitat like us, you can get in touch with theme in their social media or by ph +60196457741

The entry to the funicular railway could be daunting. Large queues of people either waiting to purchase tickets or waiting for their allocated group to board the train. The train itself was crowded but worth any problems encountered. The climb is very steep but if you are lucky enough to get a view outside, rewarding. Once there at the summit the views are magnificent. Even though on the day we were there it was slightly hazy but still a great view. Recommend to visit

Don’t book with bookingdotcom, nearly everything is more expensive with them as purchasing locally, and no it’s not the last available ticket) Was a very long wait time to enter the Funicular (2 hours). Well worth the wait, jaw dropping beauty, immaculate air, nature pure, wild animals, jungle and flora! Wow, wow, wow. I will do it again.

Unfortunately Penang hill was not a positive experience for us. We were warned that there could be queues but we had to wait over an hour an a half to take the funicular up. The view is nice and we did a walk but not much to do up there really. When we went to get our queueing ticket to come back down we were told it would be an hour but we actually had to wait over two hours before we could get back down. If we had know we would have walked! We could see when we were in the line that they weren’t doing a good job of making it efficient as sometimes that cable car was going pack down empty despite hundreds of people waiting, then we were waiting so long for the next funicular to come even though it’s only a 5 minute ride are there are two of them. Overall something that could have been a good experience was ruined by the wait time. Not worth it for us at all.

Dear Sir/Madam,
Greetings from Penang Hill Corporation!
Thank you for visiting Penang Hill. For your kind information, like any popular tourist destinations in Malaysia, queues at Penang Hill will inevitably be long during school holidays, popular weekends and public holidays.
Penang Hill Corporation always advises visitors to come early to avoid long queues and plan their trips in advance to maximise their experience at this must-visit destination in Penang.
Hope to see you again. Thank you.

An absolute joke. Bought tickets via the website day before, on which there was no indication of any wait times. Arrived at the station to absolute bedlam (think screaming kids, massive crowd etc) only to be told that there was a 2.5 hour wait and no further express tickets available for the day, plus a similar wait for the return journey. Call me crazy, but waiting in queues for 5 hours for a short trip up a hill isn’t really my idea of a holiday. Ended up giving our tickets to another family and getting in a grab to Batu Ferringhi. The website needs to have a bold banner at the top of the ticket page, making it very clear that unless you purchase the express ticket, you can say goodbye to the rest of your day. Wish we’d worn better shoes and just hiked up.

We arrived about 10 am. There was no q to purchase tickets but a queue had already formed inside. Think we had to queue for about 20-30 minutes to board the funicular. Although we were 1st in queue for our funicular car, those with express tickets were ushered to board first. It is reasonable as they paid more. The track up was steep but the funicular went up at quite a fast speed. We were greeted with misty view at the top. We waited about 2 hours for the mist , then drizzle, to clear, passing time eating at the food court there. There is also another restaurant at the top station. After walking around the top section, we went to visit the Habitat, which was a very pleasant stroll within a UNESCO Biosphere.

My husband and I paid for a fast lane ticket both ways on the Penang Hill train. I highly recommend paying the extra as the wait time was more than 1hour, we waited less than 5minutes. Well worth the visit.

We arrived relatively on a weekday and there were already snaking queues at the ticket counter. The nice lady at the start of the queue informed that only 1 person is allowed to queue... which is acceptable to avoid crowding.
At the counter another nice lady explained that the normal tickets may need to wait long, as they are entering by batches. So we decided to purchase Fast Lane tickets. And, it took us < 30 mins to get onboard the train.
We enjoyed the ride which was fast. Standing allowed us to have the best views.
Our trip down was fast too.
Penang Hill was different from our last visit and there is a new attraction called the Habitat. We took the walks and had lunch at the hotel with an amazing view.

We forgot to book a ticket in advance so bought one on arrival which was very quick - no queue at all. However, be aware that the queue for tickets is SEPARATE to the queue for the funicular. Even though there was no queue for tickets, there was a queue to get on the train beyond the barriers which you can't see from the ticket queue.
We bought a normal (not fast track) ticket and had absolutely no problems or wait. We got on the train almost immediately after buying our ticket (got on the train at 12.30pm) and didn't have to wait to get on the train back down either (around 2pm). This was on Tuesday in the first week of October.

Hi, I plan to hike up Penang hill from a different entry point (Moongate) and wish to get the train back down. As you are unable to purchase one way tickets online, is there anyway I can get a ticket at the top of Penang Hill for the train down? Or pre purchase a one way ticket? I wish to avoid having to make a detour to the lower station ticket booth before commencing the hike in a different location. Thank you!

Hi, has anyone found the train ride scary?
Written 28 September 2019
It move slowly and you will feel nothing but actually when you look down or recognize its direction. It will be scary 😅
Written 10 October 2019
Yes you can. The trail starts behind the cable car. It takes a few hours. I followed an offline maps.me to make sure I was on the right trail. Make sure to bring enough water when hiking in this heat. Enjoy! The views on the way is greater than at the top (in my opinion).

What is the best route for trekking the hill?
