I spent a fun afternoon learning to cook some of Penang’s famous street food dishes. Chef Samuel provided easy to follow recipes and coaching during the 4 hour cooking class. You are able to select the dishes you would like to cook and customize them to any dietary restrictions you may have. This was perfect for me since I don’t eat red meat, pork, or poultry. Come hungry! You’ll spend the afternoon eating lots of delicious food. The cooking class begins with a trip to the market to pick up supplies and ingredients for the class. You’ll then enjoy a light lunch at the local hawker. Next you’ll go to Chef Samuel’s cooking studio. You’ll enjoy great views of Penang as you cook and eat your creations. Chef Samuel’s cooking class is a great experience for anyone interested in learning to cook some of the food they’ve had while traveling in Penang.

I, my wife and daughter had a marvelous time with Chef Samuel. Once we signed up, Samuel sent us loads of information about Penang cuisine, and sights to see. Hardly any of his food places were on the list that I had generated from internet searches, so it was great to have this very local information from someone who knows best.

Chef Samuel trained in many cuisines during his time in culinary school, and spent 12 years in restaurants honing his craft. He really made an effort to share his knowledge about the foundations of cooking, how ingredients make a dish taste the way it does, and how to balance essential flavors. He explained the differences between different kinds of curry (Thai, Malay, Indian, Chinese, Japanese).

Our trip began in the early afternoon with a trip to a wet market where we picked up the ingredients for our chosen recipes, and then to a food center next door where got to sample a few select dishes, like popiah.

We made murtabak, kari ikan, and kuih ketayap, and all were more delicious than anything we had in restaurants during our stay! The flipping technique for the roti canai is tricky, but Samuel made it look pretty easy. We’ve been practicing at home, but still haven’t quite gotten it!

All this in an open kitchen in Samuel’s home on the 38th floor, with a view of Air Itam, Georgetown and the ocean rivaling Penang Hill.

Samuel was very welcoming and accommodating, even for the less experienced cooks in our group. He kept us on schedule, and made sure we were able to complete the dishes on time.

To top off the evening, we enjoyed the food we cooked, and had an engaging conversation with Samuel’s wife, learning about local culture and traditions, and getting to meet their infant son.

All in all, we’d do this again if we ever were fortunate enough to return Penang!

This class exceeded expectations and was a really special experience. It was so well organized, professional and well thought through. You can tell this is Chef Samuel's passion and it really shines through in his teaching and attention to detail. We love Malaysian cuisine and its complex flavors and appreciated having Samuel educate us on all of the ingredients, the stories behind the dishes, the techniques and so much more. His place is the ideal setup and is just the right balance of a professional cooking space while feeling intimate in a personal home. Also, I have a gluten and dairy intolerance and Samuel was very accommodating. And of course, all of the food was so delicious, it was the best food we've had in our 1 month stay in Malaysia and we've had a lot of delicious food! I look forward to making those dishes at home one day to share with friends and family.

I would highly recommend this class.
Samuel is very knowledgeable and professional chef who took time to explain in depth about all the ingredients and methods we were using, some of which I had never used before!
His classes are held at his spacious apartment with breathtaking views of Penang.
I was also made to feel right at home by his Charming fiance Jacqueline who provided me with many glasses of the refreshing nutmeg juice drink.

My husband surprised me with a private cooking class for Christmas and Samuel and his wonderful girlfriend make the whole experience absolutely perfect.

We started with a visit to the wet market, then breakfast at a hawker market which was scrumptious. My husband had chosen some of our favourite Malaysian dishes for us to cook, Nyonya Laksa, Ikam Assam Pedals and Lor back. Samuel is a very knowledgeable chef and having one to one teaching meant we really understood the process. His girlfriend is also knowledgeable about Penang and is history which was an added bonus.

It feels weird to say that the food we cooked was delicious but it absolutely was. One of my favourite laksas in Malaysia and the fish was delicious.

Samuel's studio is Ayer Iran at the base of Penang hill and they have a great view of the city as well.

Totally recommend this amazing class!

We had an amazing time cooking with chef Samuel! The day started with a visit to a local market to source the ingredients for our dishes. It was a beautiful experience to "shop like a local" while enjoying the view of the surrounding landscape and temples.
During the class, we learned to cook several local and popular Malaysian dishes while enjoying stunning view over the city of Penang. It was so much fun and on top of it we learned a lot about Malay culture!
Samuel is a highly experienced chef and a patient and encouraging teacher and we enjoyed every minute of the class!
I'd highly recommend taking a class with Chef Samuel if you're in Penang!
Thank you Chef for a beautiful and unique experience!!

My husband and I did the private cooking class with Samuel whilst on our honeymoon and loved it. Samuel was great at communicating with us before the class which made it really easy to book and pick the dishes that we wanted to make. The morning trip to the market was great and it was good to have breakfast included, as it was a fairly early start. Cooking the dishes was fun and informative, with Samuel giving mini lessons on some of the ingredients as we cooked. The class is outside of Georgetown (in Air Itam) which would have been good to know beforehand as we would have driven there ourselves rather than using the free transfer as we'd planned to visit Penang Hill that afternoon which is very close. All the food we made was delicious and I think it was some of the best food we ate on our whole trip - would highly recommend!

Not only will you learn how to cook Malay specialties but also learn about the history and culture at the same time! Plus you get to enjoy Penang city view from the kitchen! 😍
We loved it!!!

Samuel explained the difference between Indian and Asian curries, the taste triangle of sour : salt : sweet plus cooking techniques- with the why’s you do it a certain way.

The food was awesome, even if we do say so ourselves. And the fact that you cook four dishes of your choice from about a dozen options is also great.

So I would highly recommend it, and we will be back to learn our next four recipe choices

It was a really pleasant experience, with Samuel starting our journey at a local food court. There we had a taste of grass jelly and pasemburg and we had a nice talk. Afterwards, we had a quick walk through the market to get fresh coconut shreds and coconut milk, before we head to his house where the teaching started. Heally took the time to explain us and teach us the singularities of the spices, the vegetables, and also some of the malaysian dishes. With his whiteboard and all the ingredients that we could touch and smell, we really had a nice experience of cooking and felt like we could spend days with the chef without getting bored and learning as much as we could.
