Authentic Penang, away from the tourist traps.
This tour was one of the best tours we’ve ever done over the course of our many holidays. It took us away from the main tourist strip and allowed us to have a more authentic cultural experience. We saw the countryside, villages, local industry, old houses (which are still being lived in) and small religious sites. We had a number of stops to taste local produce and cuisine. We had the local wildlife pointed out to us along the way. Priscilla and SJ were informative and entertaining. I did the tour with my husband and two teenage kids, and we were joined by a lovely solo traveller who was continuing on to a longer ride. We all enjoyed the tour, no easy task with teenaged kids. I’m not particularly fit, but I found the ride doable. The more accomplished riders were allowed to go on ahead. There are two cycling tour operators in Penang. Both get excellent reviews, but we chose Matahari due to its attention to safety and equipment maintenance. Our bikes were excellent and fitted to our height and weight. I have a microscopic head, often requiring a kid’s size helmet. SJ ensured I had an appropriately fitted helmet before we left. Nothing was too much trouble. I loved this tour. Fresh air. Nature. No tourist traps. Education. Entertainment. Nice food. And a bit of exercise. I will do this again. But the longer your next time.

Highly recommended bike ride and cultural immersion!
Excellent, very well organised bike tour through lovely scenery and with several fascinating stops to learn about local culture. The bikes were in good condition and were well-maintained and had been adjusted for our heights in advance. Our guides Princilla was hugely knowledgable about local flora and fauna and was really friendly. Our other guide, SJ was equally knowledgable abc friendly. Both clearly loved their country and Penang. Stops included a goat farm, where we fed the goats and a fishing village where had local coffee (kopi) and tried some delicious local treats. We then visited a local house and learned all about nutmeg! Very interesting. SJ moved our rucksacks by car so we didn’t have to carry them but could retrieve anything we needed at the stopping points. Despite the wonderful mountainous scenery the ride was flat and easy. Highly recommended!

A must do trip if you are in Penang
Fantastic off the beaten track experience, which gave a wonderful insight to traditional Malaysian life. Both Princilia and SJ were great guides and a fountain of local knowledge. Cheers Scott & Jan

      Beautiful Penang’s rural bike ride.
This bike tour was one of our Malaysia’s highlights. Very professional and organised by Princilla and SJ, who also shared about the local culture and history. The heat is intense but they keep you hidrate with water throughout. You must cover yourself well to avoid sunburn like myself and sunstroke afterwards. If you do the whole day bike ride you need to be in some shape of fitness as towards the end myself and a few others couldn’t cope cycling up hill in the heat. Overall, a great experience!!

We did the classic ( 1.1) tour. About 32km in total - including some fantastic scenery and an insight into the way of life in rural Penang. Coffee breaks and lunch to gave a raste of local cuisine. The guides Princilla and SJ were great - supportive and knowledgeable. Highly recommended.

      Well worthwhile!
We had a great time. Matahari took care of everything including the driver, bikes, water, helmets, etc. All of the equipment was in great condition. It's a 50 minute ride from Georgetown but the experience was worthwhile. Got to see another side of Malaysia, biking through the countryside. We took the short version of the tour and it was perfect for us. Picked up from our hotel at around 7am and started biking before the day got hot and ended a little before noon. Princilia was with us most of the time and she explained the history of Penang and various local customs and cultures. Her personal background itself is also very fascinating.

      Excellent
Highly recommend this tour. The team are very professional and passionate about their local heritage. We saw and learned a lot about this part of Penang and its traditions. Bikes and helmets were excellent. Route was flat and not challenging with well timed breaks. A great way to spend a morning!

      Amazing sightseeing & cultural experience
I went on the Balik Pulau cycle tour yesterday and I HIGHLY recommend it. It was great to be out in the countryside and Priscilla and SJ were amazing hosts and guides. I felt in good hands the whole time. The excellent bikes made riding a real pleasure and it was a great way to visit some small towns and see some beautiful nature that I couldn’t have visited on my own. The ride is accessible for anyone who is in average shape; there are frequent stops and having lunch in a rice paddy was lovely. To give an indication of the excellent hospitality: I had mentioned I was interested in nutmeg. At the first stop, SJ showed me a nutmeg tree and got some nuts out. At the next stop, he told us more about nutmeg production & colonial history re nutmeg, and we tasted the fruit around the nut. We also got some nuts to take home. And at the lunch stop, SJ gave us some fresh nutmeg juice (!) to drink - everybody loved it. I thought it was incredible that they went out of their way to attend to my interests. I highly recommend the experience.

Self guiding cycling trip around the Penang/Perak regions
I rented a bicycle from Matahari Cycles recently to tour around Penang/Perak regions myself for a week - what an experience! SJ and Princila were so helpful throughout, providing me with a route for my trip, contacts to meet along the way and anything that would help make my trip easier (high vis, lights, etc). SJ was always contactable and available to answer any questions I had with I was so grateful for. The bike was in great condition also which was particularly important given the length of my journeys. The price to rent the bike was more than fair given the level of local knowledge and guidance I was given. The route I took was from Penang > Ban Pecah > Taiping > Selama > Penang Kent (contact provided by SJ) looked after me so well in Ban Pecah and Selama - he brought me on an ATV trip, to waterfalls, to eat mountain shrimp, trying a ton of local food, a concert, white water rafting, as well as a sing along! The accommodations were very comfortable and ideal for my stays. Thank you Kent for everything! In Taiping, SJ put me in touch with Zam and Ah Boy at ATV adventures. I stayed in there Bus Accommodation for 2 nights which was such a unique and cool stay! I also did the offroad ATV adventure here which was great fun. Zam and the guys took me for lunch and dinner while I was there too which was great! SJ also provided me with a cycling route to Port Weld, stopping at museums, seafood restaurants, charcoal and boot making factories, underground tunnels, temples! It was endless! The best part of the whole trip was meeting all of the local Malaysian people, learning their culture and trying their delicious local good! SJ and Matahari Cycles made this all possible with there Self Cycle Adventure and I cannot thank them enough for that! Thank you to everyone who made this trip possible!

      Excellent licensed cycle tour company
Firstly this is a licensed company with excellently maintained bikes and they supplied helmets unlike some of the cycle tours we passed. If you are booking a tour firstly check they are licensed. This is the second tour we’ve taken with Matahari cycles and this one,Tour 1.1 Balik Pulau Countryside Experience (The Classic) was brilliant. Princilia and SJ are real Professionals. The cycles we used were good quality Giant mountain bikes and we were supplied with helmets and water. They made sure everyone knew about using their bikes before they started. The cycle ride was about 35km of fairly flat terrain through a variety of villages and habitats including lowlands, mangroves, rice fields and palm oil plantations. Princilia took the time to explain and give real insights into the local way of life, she’s committed to supporting local industry and passionate about rural life. We recommended this tour to our daughters and to friends who both thoroughly enjoyed it. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them and you can book directly with them.

      Amazing!
We had a wonderful tour with Matahari. The guides Princilia and SJ were absolutely amazing. We learned so much on the trip and really managed to capture the real Malaysia. Everything about this tour was professionally done, fully licensed and insured too for peace of mind. We would certainly go again when we re-visit Penang .

My husband and I had a wonderful time with Matahari Cycle Tours. Our guides Princilia and SJ were very generous with sharing their knowledge and generous with their time. Princilia rode with us through different hamlets. In each place we stopped and talked with different residents and local artisans. SJ met us at different spots with snacks and lunch. Matahari Cycle Tours has been working in the Balik Pulau countryside for many years and have deep relationships with local people. As a result, we were able to observe and understand aspects of community life that we would not have been able to otherwise. We visited artisans in the foothills who work with palm fronds and other native plants. Pricilia showed us garden plants used in cooking, for medicinal purposes or for other uses. From there we rode to a kind of "goat dairy." They produce goat milk and also act as an animal sanctuary for goats and other animals. Later we visited a lovely fishing hamlet and had coffee there. From there we continued through a palm oil plantation and stopped to learn about palm oil production, including the labor involved and how the farmers' palm oil cooperative works. We ate a delicious lunch in a small shelter among rice paddies. Finally we rode into foot hills and down to Balik Pulau. The ride was fairly long, but well-paced so we never felt tired. Matahari Cycle Tour's bikes are good quality and comfortable to ride. We were very well cared for my Princilia and SJ. We especially enjoyed talking with both of them. I highly recommend the experience!

We did the 4 hour ride and it’s def not peanuts if you’re my mum and dad who are in their 70s! But they really enjoyed themselves and so did our 6 year old. We cycled 27km of dirt paths, pebbled paths, stony paths, palm leaf strickened paths. The whole thing lasted 5 hours by the time we were done as we made many stops, guide Princilla told us humorous stories. We saw wild monkeys, domesticated cows, ducks, chickens, a palm tree plantation, learnt to open up a coconut, roll a blade of grass into a cigarette, and how organic cosmetic powder is made. Our guides took care of our bicycles, helmets, child seat for our 3 year old, lunch (laksa lemak is sooo delicious), amazing nutmeg juice and local coffee. Before the trip the guides took our heights and precalibrated our bikes. We only had to bring sunscreen, dress in long sleeves and long pants to keep away the fierce Penang sun. Would recommend paying extra for the round transfer. We regretted not buying any nutmeg juice from Balik Pulau as research claims only BP genuinely juices fresh nutmeg. One big kudos to the guides is through their guided trips, they provide much needed visibility to local cottage industries. We would def do it again next time we’re in Penang.

My wife and I had a *lot* of fun on this tour and found it very interesting and satisfying. Princilia and S.J. were great. The bikes were in good shape. We rode through hamlets and stopped to visit people making traditional items like woven baskets that cover and protect fruit as it matures. Rode through a small town preparing for a wedding. Stopped at a Buddhist temple and at a charming coffee/tea shop where I had two macha teas.
Our trip included entering the home of a woman and man that make their livelihood by fishing. They were removing the catch from the nets as we watched. Also went to a palm plantation and spoke with a rancher/owner. Lots of fun.
We made other stops that I don't remember now. We did ride through a rice paddy before stopping for a lunch that S.J. and Princilia served on a large banana leaf. Very enjoyable.
This tour is highly recommended. S.J. and Princilia are smart and good people and a pleasure to spend a day with,

After spending a month in SE Asia, I have to say this cycle tour was a highlight of the trip. All of the glowing reviews are well deserved. We were picked up at our Georgetown hotel and transported with one other couple to the starting point of the ride in the SW part of Penang island. Princilia and SJ made sure our bikes were fitted properly, and they were in excellent condition and comfortable to ride. The ride through hamlets, agricultural and fishing areas, and palm fields was at an easy pace peppered with Princilia's vast knowledge of the area. We stopped often to speak to locals and try our hand at some of their work. Coffee and lunch breaks were great. The photos taken by the guides and sent to us after the ride were beautiful and much appreciated. I highly recommend taking a bike tour with Matahari. Thanks Princilia and SJ for a perfect day!

Princilia and SJ gave us such a wonderful day through the countryside, we loved everything 🙂 Prior to the ride, you give them your height measurements so they can have their comfortable and great quality mountain bikes adjusted for you before you arrive.

We explored a few different hamlets, having coffee at a local cafe (best coffee we had on the island) opposite a temple where Princilia and SJ taught us about some local traditions and products.

We were lead through palm trees and rice fields with more interesting stops along the way showing us customs we would never have learned about otherwise.

Finishing up, we arrived at Princilia's 'office' for lunch, which turned out to be a small bamboo gazebo (there's probably a better term for it!) In the middle of the fields.

Full of fresh fruit, noodles and nutmeg juice we cycled into town to meet the shuttles that dropped us home.

Everything about this experience was special and unique and you also couldn't ask for better guides. I couldn't recommend this any higher, thanks guys!

We chose Matarhari Cycle tours on the basis of the great reviews they had and we weren’t disappointed. Our half day really was a highlight of our time in Penang and showed us a difference side of the island to Georgetown. Princilia and SJ were great guides, professional, caring and great to spend time with.
Communication with them was excellent, we were picked up from our hotel in Georgetown and the bikes are very good quality and well-maintained. The ride is relaxed and nearly all on flat ground, in very beautiful countryside. We had coffee and lunch on the way, learnt a great deal about the area and Princilia took photos and sent them to us afterwards so we had a record of our day.
Thank you for a great experience. Highly recommended!

Absolutely fabulous! Well organised, professional, clear and prompt
communication both before and after, quality bikes, very hospitable, and passionate about educating and sharing the hidden gems of Malaysia. A wonderful way to get out of George Town and experience the countryside. I couldn’t recommend the tour more highly. A must do for everyone. I am a 49 woman, who doesn’t usual cycle, and found it extremely enjoyable and very doable (almost easy).
