        Amazing food by lovely people
We booked in for the Hawker food morning class and were met by Mok outside the Chowstra market for a walk around the market followed by breakfast with coffee. Then upstairs where Amy began our cooking class and it was fantastic. Amy took the time to explain why the ingredients were so important and how to cook them correctly. The food we cooked was amazing and there was no way we could finish it all. The kitchen was clean and the food amazing. Definitely going home to Australia to cook some delicious Malay food😄

Nice place to learn and cook traditional food
Simon-san and all the instructors who supported us, thank you very much for introducing us to such a wonderful culinary experience during our visit. We thoroughly enjoyed the Chinese and Indian traditional foods and also appreciated sharing the cooking methods. I cannot wait to share this experience with others when I return to my home country. Unfortunately, due to our schedules, we were not able to learn more about the traditional foods, but we are eager to visit again in the future and explore more of the local cuisine.

The cooking class was great. Simon, Mok and Amy were very accommodating and it was a great experience overall. The dishes we cooked were delicious and Amy spent a lot of time explaining the background of the ingredients and the dishes themselves. Overall the guys welcomed us and we had an awesome time. I would happily recommend this cooking class to anyone looking to learn how to cook Malaysian food and do so in a welcoming environment.

We took an Indian cooking course with Simon in June 2023. We had previously researched and consciously decided on this course. The price is fair and you are not in a big class but have a private cooking lesson.
We met in the morning at the market. Here Simon showed us many interesting things and together we bought some ingredients. We liked that very much. After our shopping we went for breakfast together. Here Simon also told us many interesting things. Not only about food, but also about culture.
After breakfast we went to cook. Here we met in a kitchen with Jenny. Together we cooked three main dishes, two different kinds of bread and dessert.
We were able to gain a lot of experience here.
After we finished cooking everything, we ate our masterpiece together.
We are happy to recommend the course.

We have been coming to penang for many years and today we have had one of the best days ever. We booked this cooking class with Simon and Jenny whom are both such lovely people. The whole experience from shopping at the morning market, cooking a fantastic menu and eating together at the table was amazing. Jennys skills in cooking are incredible and highly skilled. Not only was this a cooking course but Simons skills in story telling and his vast knowledge of the island was fascinating. At the start of the lesson we started out as students but by the time we left we felt like friends. We have taken away fantastic knowledge, skills and memories to share with family and friends back home. Thank you Jenny and Simon we will see you again 😀

I booked Nyonya cooking class. Simon was already on WhatsApp very responsive when I made booking for cooking class. He explained to me everything that I wanted to know. The cooking class was not like some massive ones but it felt like I am cooking in my home with my family. It was really great experience. Because of that class I bought pie tee mold and will make pie tee for my family at home. Again extra thanks to Madam Amy and special thanks to Simon.

Fantastic experience!! I was keen to join a Hawker food cooking class whilst on a brief stopover in Penang. Simon and his mother Amy made the whole experience a standout day. From putting together a menu that accommodated my pescatarian diet, visiting Chowrasta market to taste & purchase ingredients, experiencing breakfast with locals and then great tuition on cooking authentic Nyonya cuisine - it has been the highlight of my visit to Penang.
Simon and Amy looked after me so well and were so kind to extend their hospitality to visit the Penang Peranakan mansion & more. They went out of their way to provide a truly unique experience.
      Definitely recommend.

We really enjoyed this cooking class.

We took the afternoon class, which we were able to book at very short notice (the day before). It was a private class with just the two of us.

Amy, Mok and Brandon were so kind and accommodating. Amy taught us a number of Nyonya dishes, such as chicken curry, roti jala, vegetable stir-fry and ondeh-ondeh. She explained it all clearly and the ingredients were fresh and tasty. The food was delicious and we will definitely try to make it at home!

They also had some great tips on what and where to eat in Georgetown and Mok dropped us off on the way back which was lovely.

All in all, this was a fantastic class and we loved it!

This is a local family run business and they couldn’t have been kinder. Very informative about the history, architecture, and local food. We started with a traditional breakfast at a local gem restaurant. We then were able to tour the markets and items for our recipes were purchased by our hosts.Amy guided us through the creation of several local and amazing dishes and unique deserts. The family then took us to local stores for souvenirs and to see tea pulling. It was an amazing experience. Not to be missed. ❤️

If you’re on the fence, just go ahead and book! For me traveling can often be a surface level experience, hitting all the must visit sights and eats, but a class like this with engaging hosts like Simon and Amy really put a memorable, personal touch to this trip.

I loved the market tour, it was special hearing unique local stories and insights about the goods and people of the market. Uses of Penang nutmeg oil, the crushed coconut stand, and custom made-to-order curry paste were some highlights.

The cooking class was filled with loads of amazing food peppered with stories about context behind ingredients and where/how to source, Amy’s family and heritage, and life in Penang. Come with a completely empty stomach - between breakfast at the stalls, sampling ingredients, and the feast you’ll cook with Amy, you’ll be stuffed.

We had such a wonderful time learning to cook Malaysian/Chinese food. We had CHAR Koay Teow, Loh Bak wrapped, Fried Prawn Fritters, Glutinous Rice with coconut milk, and nyonya Herbal flower tea. Simon and Mrs May our instructors were wonderful and very helpful in teaching us proper wok technique. The Chrysanthemum herbal tea was amazing we must have had at least a gallon during the 4.5 hour class.

I can only say that for us the time in this class was one of the key highlights of visiting Georgetown. Yes we enjoyed eating all around at the haka centers but to make it yourself and know how to make the CHAR Koay Teow ourselves was amazing. Additionally the Loh Bak wrapped sausages were awesome!

If your in Georgetown certainly spend an afternoon taking a class. It will enhance your experience of Penang beyond what you will experience otherwise.
