The obelisk sits in the parking lot by the harbor where the market takes place on Saturdays. It’s a big spear into the sky but it’s a genuine monument to freedom and worth a short visit.

This is about the only interesting sight in Port Vendres. After you have passed all the fish restaurants and bakeries on the waterfront at the very end you have something of interest to see. It is typical obelisk but the four panels at the base represent significant values and history of the French. What is interesting is the panel that depicts the French helping the Americans to win independence. They are more right than many people think, especially Americans. If it had not been for the French fleet showing up just in time at Yorktown to keep the British from escaping from Washington having them surrounded on the land, the Revolutionary War might have taken a different turn. The other panels depict the end of slavery, the right to liberty and the right to commerce. All great values given by the French to civilization. The view is very nice of the small harbor from here and is worth the short walk along the waterfront.…

We took a 12 day Mediterranean cruise and Port-Vendres was the next to last stop. We didn't see much about the place online so we didn't expect much. It turns out that Port-Vendres is a very cute fishing village with a variety of restaurants and shops. What a little treasure. The obelisk was nice and they had a local market that was fantastic. We stopped at one of the restaurants for a glass of wine we were able to enjoy overlooking the boats. It was delightful.…
