Farewell Spit Eco Tours began in 1946 as the mail delivery to the lighthouse keepers on Farewell spit. Farewell Spit is a nature reserve and bird sanctuary. Summer home to wading birds from the Arctic and also a growing Gannet colony near the end. Our hand picked local guides love to share their knowledge with people from all over the world, many of whom return on subsequent visits to our country.

Farewell Spit Eco Tours is the only commercial company authorised to drive the length of the spit so we felt lucky to go where most other people cannot go. Our trip left Collingwood at 1.30 (it is dependent on tides). Our driver was cheerful and informative and gave us lots of opportunities to get out and stretch our legs and... More

The Gannet Colony Tour was everything I wanted! Our guide was friendly, incredibly knowledgeable, and was always telling us something interesting. It's long but well worth the time if you like wildlife. The tour goes where the average person cannot go, so you get to see things most people don't. The tour starts with the drive to the spit and... I love collecting geographical extremities , so had a great day on Farewell Spit. Our tour went at 2 pm , but all depends on the tide times The guides were excellent , the scenery superb - lots of blowing sand - and the coffee and biscuits at the light house much needed and appreciated. Tour goes from Collingwood ,... More

Our day began at 8.30 and each day's tour departs at a different time to suit the tides. Well publicised start times a sianle for months ahead which made booking easy. Expertly run tour with everything you could wish for on such a day. Our own guide Tony, was hilarious but not over the top and really knew his stuff.... More

We took the Farewell Spit Eco tour and enjoyed it. Lots of driving but we learned a lot and the stops were very good. Our trip went from 10:30 - 5:00 but the hours for the tours vary significantly (based on tides). We had gone to Wharariki Beach the day before and found some aspects of the tour to overlap... More

We had a fantastic day, our tour guide was great. With great commentary throughout our trip, he explained all the history for this region which was very interesting, we never got bored on this 6 hour tour. The light house and old cottages were wonderful to explore. Well worth the trip.

An early start was had due to the tides. Activity is based around the tides. Great day out made more so by helpful info provided all along the trip. Long trip out to the lighthouse at the end of the spit and then back via Cape Farewell.
