Large fort

The main colonial era feature of the city. It is worth strolling around, and the riverine landscape is good.

This fort is fabulous; it is intact, beautifully maintained and a pleasure to explore. I have been to dozens of forts, and frankly get a touch bored by the prospect of yet another, but this one jolted my cynicism and brought me back to my senses. I would have liked to spend much longer.

If you are on a cruise ship like we were and taking a cruise you will most likely stop at the fort as it was lined with tour bus all morning long. this venue does nto have a fee and is worthy of a few minutes of your time. Some of the historical information is in English while must is... More

Fort San Jose stands just upriver from the northern passage across the delta into the Amazon. Local guides claim that it is the largest in South America. For various reasons the Portuguese never finished building out the original design. During its long history never fired a shot at a foreign enemy. The buildings, walls and grounds are very well preserved... More

By no means is the structure something to marvel at but I did learn it is the biggest fort in Latin America which to me, leaves a lot to be desired. It's cool to check out the guard posts that overlook the mighty Amazon but besides that, it was eh. There is a great market directly across the street that... More

Well-preserved fort that is easy to access and do a self-guided tour. Buildings show obvious signs of some restoration and maintenance and are pretty basic. The hike up to the walls is worth it for the view. Church is humble but charming. All of the staff are friendly and as helpful as possible when very few speak English. The kids... More

You can do your own walk around or hire a guide. We walked around by ourselves and found it interesting however not a lot of the explanations were in English -- mainly Portuguese. Was really amazed at how well the buildings, church and canons are so well preserved. I took a photo of a painting of what the fort looked... More

The 1700 fort is an impressive structure with a incredible staff who would do anything to make up the distance between your bad Portuguese language and your understanding. With a guide, a few explanation boards and set up, it could be a great visit. But even by yourself (and free) you will find interest.
