Overview
More
The Coal Mines Historic Site was Tasmania’s first operational mine, established as a much-needed local source of coal, but also as a place of punishment for the ‘worst class’ of convicts.Along with the nearby Port Arthur Historic Site, the Coal Mines Historic Site is included in the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage listing.A visit to the Coal Mines is a fascinating and rewarding adjunct to any visit to the Port Arthur Historic Site.

We were told about the Coal Mines while at Port Arthur and it was well worth the short drive. The site is free, and you are free to roam about the ruins and read about what happened there. There are signs for various other short...More

This wonderful site is an amazing place to visit. The ruins are well preserved and the lack of fences and boundaries allows for freedom to walk throughout all the buildings, even in the rooms where the convicts used to sleep and the dark prison cells....More

Well worth the 30 min drive from Port Arthur to see the old coal mines. Part of the convict history trail but a bit off the newton track. Fascinating story and a surprise that it was left to fall into such disrepair. Amazing location next...More

We also came across this hidden gem by accident. Would certainly suggest more detailed signage as we were not sure which road to take. We drove up the gravel road to the old coal mine which was the first operational mine in Tasmania. Apparently it...More

Having been to Port Arthur a few times, I was pleased that we made the trip out to the Coal Mines on our last visit. This site tells the story of the island’s first coal mine, the conditions endured and some of the characters. The...More

This Coal Mines Historic Site are on the World Heritage list. These coal mines were done by convicts. Their moral was quite low when they worked here. Who else would like to work in the dark? Outside in the light it wasn’t any better. They...More

We took a chance after seeing a signpost and were not dissapointed. There is a long and a short walk to the main settlement (to the left of sign). Lovely walk and lovely views. Very interesting spot to explore. Needs to be signposted and made...More

We only did a short walk to the ruins of the main settlement since we were running tight on time, and even just that was well worth the detour over to the site. We didn’t do the Port Arthur Historic Site so can’t compare, but...More
