You cannot go into this due to hazardous gases but it is manned for information and purchase of small souvenirs. Opening hours have also changed so check before visiting.

We visited the Tar Tunnel as part of the 10 Ironbridge Museums and attractions. We arrived just after opening so not many people around. We could not go down the Tar Tunnel itself as there was a gas problem, but the young lady on the desk explained the issue fully and allowed us into the entrance so we could look... More

Very interesting historical talk by the guide, and a fascinating piece of history, but unfortunately there was a gas warning when we were there so we couldn't go into the tunnels. Interesting none the less and hope to be back to complete the tour.

We did get to look inside from the shop but it's not the same as going inside.looks like it will be fun for the children when it does decide to open.will... More

We had no idea this existed until we visited the gorge. Bit of a tortuous route to get to it including a nice canal walk. Good exhibits and a low roofed tunnel which still oozes bitumen. Hard hats a necessity.

difficult to find from the china museum, directions were not clear. unfortunately we could not go in when we did find it, as there were dangerous gases so nobody was allowed in. as you have to park at the china museum to get there, it would have been nice if they had let people know it wasn't open to go...
