This temple was founded in 1635. A quaint, nicely preserved temple. Continuing further, you’ll pass Perry Road with it’s cobblestone, willow-lined road and a small set of preserved old buildings from Perry’s landing era. Small peaceful temple in a peaceful small town. Ryosenji temple is pretty much at the start of the famed Perry Road. It was at this temple that the Treaty of Shimoda was signed between US and Japan by Commodore Perry.

Small temple in Shimoda, we also visited the museum, that had the history of the area, with Perry, Harris and one story about Okichi-san. Interesting...

If you're interested in Matthew Perry and the opening of Japan in the 19th century this is good place to visit. Their little museum holds some interesting art and artifacts, and if you pray at the temple you'll allegedly have enhanced success in your career. Fantastic little spot with a garden of white and lilla flowers. Flowers bloom in mid to late May. Here commodore Perry signed the Shimoda treaty. Don't miss the vertical garden and the little shrine on the left when you come in
