Myōkōkōgen is famed for it's 9 local ski resort areas. The first of these, Akakura, was founded in the 1930s, making it one of the oldest established ski areas in the world. It is also a traditional mountain retreat of Japan's imperial family. Myōkō Kōgen is also well known for its many local onsen (hot springs) emanating from the Jigoku-dani valley between Mt. Myōkō and Mt. Mae The area is dominated by 'Hokushingogaku' - a spectacular series of five mountains (Madarao, Myōkō, Kurohime, Togakushi and Iizuna) that make up the border of Nagano and Niigata prefectures.

Being our first visit to Japan we were not sure what to expect. My husband and I are not gun skiers we are more advanced beginners and love skiing! We arrived and it was snowing and it snowed the entire time we were there! Not only beautiful but there are loads of places to ski and all different levels. We... More

We had about 3 metres of snow to play with. Runs were quiet and non-existent lines for lifts. Great value and a quiet, traditional town. Would come here again.

I was in Japan early December. Didn't catch the huge snow fall in tokyo... so being equator dweller, we just have to try to find some snow. Strategy > Since we had a week in tokyo. Close monitoring of the weather forecast. There was this particular day where Niigata/Nagano were expecting precipitation. So those were the days selected (14 Dec... More

Thanks for taking the time to review Myoko Kogen freeier and really glad you had a great time. FYI onsen in hotels are open all year round. The local community onsen closes during winter. Please check out the many hotel onsen on your next trip. These usually cost between 500-1,000 yen. Taxis are freely available and you can book these... More

As beginner/intermediate skiers we loved this area for skiing ... there are plenty of slopes that are all "joined" and the snow was good despite very poor falls in nearby areas. The local town is quiet but has a nice feel and the ski slopes were similar ... quiet and friendly with short queues even over the New Year holidays.... More

After visiting countless ski areas in Europe and the USA-Canada, it was now time for Japan.First stop Myoko Akakura Onsen sounded like a good introduction.Without having seen some pictures of the resort it was with surprise we were measured by a somewhat rundown cityscape, but not without its charm. The area was not linked should not be a surprise, just bad... Thanks for taking the time to review Myoko Kogen Phayao13. If you are an experienced skier, yes, you would've found Akakura Onsen not very challenging. However there are numerous other resorts close by that hardcore skiers do enjoy such as Suginohara, Akakan and Madarao. I invite you to try them on your next trip here. We're also happy to help... Apparently they just had the worst snow fall in 30 years.... And I still loved it!!! We were lucky to have 2 powder days in the 6 days we had snowboarding. 5cm of snow was predicted one day, and we ended up 50cm. We went through Powder Recon and can't recommend them enough. They guided and took us to a... More

Another visit this year, and even though it had not been a great year for snowfall, Myoko rarely disappoints. Very few crowds, great snow, reasonable prices- hard to beat

A wonderful village positioned up the mountain in amongst the trees and overlooking the valley. We stayed in the 'Central Hotel' which had it all for a group of skiers - dated but clean and tidy, traditional rooms, breaky included offering western and Japanese, cosy bar with log fire and close 5 minute walk to village central with it's great... Perhaps I didn't research this one enough, but Myoko Kogen is not suited to everyones tastes. I would describe Myoko Kogen as a collection of seven small ski areas that present as a single mountain, but are really seven small ski areas. Each area has its own ticket which makes life frustrating. If you are only there a few days... More

We arrived just BEFORE the real snow started, but could tell that the pistes were well suited to families. There were no queues at the lifts and the on-snow eating options were varied, interesting, affordable and warm.
