This is also sometimes called as the Island of Gods. this island has a strong history as well as it is quiet a sight when you approach the Floating Shrine on the island. the Floating Shrine is called "The Great Torii". It is also called the Torii Gate. I believe the word Miyajima in Japanese means "Shrine Island" This island... More

By way of background, a big deal is made in Japanese culture about Miyajima and how the island is sacred. I cannot explain what happened here, but being there gave me a real sense of 'zen' and it is really difficult to describe. I am extremely grateful that I was able to experience the location, and I wonder if other... More

We have visited Miyajima island twice. The first time was a day trip when staying in Hiroshima. When we were on the island we loved it so much we vowed to stay on the island if we revisited Japan. The second visit we stayed two nights and loved our stay. The island is quaint, unique and beautiful. What we found... More

Access to the island can be by ferry which costs about 180 yen. There is a fast boat from the dock along the canal at the Atomic Dome that costs 400 yen one way. It takes about 45 minutes to get there and you can feed the flying seagulls as they glide along with the speed of the boat. At... More

The reason that the temple gate (Tori) is located in the sea is because the island used to be considered to sacred for common people to set foot on, so they would have to go by boat, and enter the temple from a wharf. I was lucky enough to witness the Monks chanting during a ceremony. Wild dear wander around... More

We had decided to get down to Hiroshima on our Japan trip and wanted to do a day-trip outside of Hiroshima in order to stay two days. We found Miyajima on our guide book and decided to go in order to use our JR pass and hike Mt. Misen. We were lucky we had great weather that day for hiking... More

The island was packed with tourists, families and couples on a weekend but I had a great time. It was a beautiful island I wished I had more time to explore. Didn't get a chance to go up to the mountain but the rest of the shrines are still plenty beautiful.

We did not get enough time to truly take in everything this island had to show. The views at dusk are spectacular. There are deer roaming the streets but feeding or touching them is not condoned. Your japan rail pass will get you to the train station and on the ferry to the islands for free.

For some reason, I found my trip to Miyajima somewhat underwhelming. If you do visit, I would recommend that you take the Mount Misen ropeway as the views from the top of the mountain are very nice.

You won't regret your trip to Miyajima. The island is beautiful, the view from the top is spectacular, and the temples and shrines are fantastic. And don't forget the tame deer wandering around, stealing maps and tickets from tourists!
