This small but compact castle has the authentic wooden interior & you can climb the floors to appreciate the structure of the castle & views across Hikone. The exterior walls & moats can be explored & steps rise to the castle.

Exactly, this place is not spectacular. but you can enjoy with view of lake, Also there is a traditional Japanese style-garden, Genkyuen that is really peaceful place.

Do you wonder if visiting this castle is worthwhile? The structure of castle is nice but its rooms are empty. To reach the upper floor you have to climb some very steep stairs and this make the visit impossible for those who have mobility problems...More

Uncrowded and best viewed during cherry blossom time. Travelled as a (mature age Australian foodie) couple to Japan in April/May 2017 - extensively by JR rail, air BnB Tokyo, hotels elsewhere.

There are only a few ancient castle left in Japan, and Hikonejo is one of it, it's applying the World heritage now. The amazing castle located in the mountain, with a gorgeous view including the Biwa lake. 僅有不多的日本古城,是任何一個城愛好者遊關西的必去景點,雖不如姬路城般宏偉但以其坐落於山上來說卻帶來另一番體會。

Hikone Castle is an original castle, though rather simple in nature, and is regarded as one of the four national heritage castles in Japan. The area is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season

This is a very attractive Castle standing in extensive grounds with a moat outside. Lots of Sakura blossom when we visited! There was quite a long queue to look inside then some steep steps up and down so consider whether you really want to do...More

We stayed overnight in Hikone so we could explore it properly without being rushed to catch the train back to Kyoto. On hindsight, we could have done it as a day trip, but still it was worth being in Hikone for a couple of nights...More
