I lived and travelled in Japan for nearly 2 years and the onsen part of the culture never really won me over - sitting in a public bath naked with a load of other men and not doing anything isn't my ideal travel pastime. But...More

We enjoyed the next door "pubic" wash area and hot spring which was diluted with natural spring water. It was still hot (40 C) but the minerals were not as intense. Because it is a public bath for locals, the operators expect visitors to bring...More

A very nice place to stop after a long day of hiking. Very peaceful, very small village. Lots of ryokan options, each one with their own onsen.

Tiny bath was so nice and good to rest after trekking. Mehari-zushi the food nearby was so good!

Just a few steps from bus stop and car park. And only few steps to cover this area. Not crowded. I saw people put some eggs and ate them there, so cute.

The public bath is small and very good quality and value (couldn't get in the World Heritage bathhouse due to limited time!!!!!!!). Nearby cook eggs in the open hot spring but have lunch in the Ryokan next door!

After visiting Koya-san, we stayed at Yunonine onsen. They claim it is the oldest onsen in Japan and have hosted the Japanese Royal family. This place feels very old. It is not fancy like a luxury hotel as its all about the beautiful old onsen...More

The stand-out onsen is the world heritage listed one. Be warned, it would be cramped with two people, and with three of us in there it was cosy to say the least. The other onsen are so-so, nothing to write home about. If you find...More

I visited this onsen after visiting Hongu Taisha and hiking for 3 hours and before heading back to Tanabe Station. The area is small, but relaxing. I am glad that I could make it to this onsen before heading back to Tanabe.
