Not so difficult if you are fit and agile.

I thought I'd write to counter some of the reviews here that make the climb seem nigh impossible... read more

We were amazed by the people young and old who could make it to the top and down through the steep almost vertical 537 steps of uneven sometimes slippery stones. We gave it a try but not wholeheartedly and gave up too soon. As long...More

I thought I'd write to counter some of the reviews here that make the climb seem nigh impossible. When I visited the shrine, there were two tour groups of Japanese pensioners and all managed the climb - of course, some were struggling and some took...More

It's ok and if you haven't seen a shrine before it is interesting. For me I've seen far too many now.

This climb isn't for everyone. For me it was much more difficult coming down then going up, but I walk often in a hilly place. If it was raininng at all, it would be dangerous. There is an interesting rock formation at the top and...More

Before leaving the States, I googled map Shingu, Japan and noticed that this Shrine is close to the Sunshine hotel. I had purchased a JRail Pass and WiFi connection for my seven day adventure to be able to navigate and be guided to my chosen...More

The Kamikura shrine is where the gods of the Kumano Kodo descended from. It is accessible via very steep and uneven stone steps so be forewarned.

The climb up really is as hairy as others describe it. It was raining when we climbed the "stairs", making the uneven, mossy rocks even more slippery and dangerous. The shrine itself is not open, but it makes for some great photo's, especially in sakura...More

The stairs to the temple are a little hard to climb but it was worth it. The shrine is small but nice and you get a great view of Shingu city at the top. If you are taking the bus, the bus-stop is Saibansyo-Mae.

The Kamikura shrine is a hidden gem in Shingu; it's a photogenic spot with an orange bridge and cherry blossom trees in the spring, and just past the first shrine is a 500 step steep trail with stone steps up to another shrine and a...More

This is a site of major significance. It is also great fun to visit - amazingly precipitous 530-odd steps to clime to the shrine and rock and wonderful view over Shingu. Very tricky when wet
