We travelled from Sendai which involved 2 bus journeys and about 3 hours to get there from Sendai. The first leg which terminated at Tsuruoka was quite a scenic drive with a local bus continuing on from the same bus station. The first part of...More

My Japanese girlfriend was sceptical about the visit to this region just to climb a mountain (I had initially wanted to do all three in Dewar San) but we both agreed after we had done it that it was well worthwhile. Negotiating the bus route...More

With a bus to the bottom and a bus back from the top, an ideal walk for lazy walkers. Well we can do the up, not so keen on the down! Beautiful atmosphere among the cedar trees, pagoda stunning. Well worth doing if you are...More

We stayed two days in Tsuruoka and enjoyed both the aquarium and Mt Haguro. The Mt Haguro hike is absolutely gorgeous and spiritual! It winds through a forest of cedars, some a 1000 years old! Along the way are several shrines, the five story pagoda...More

We had a rental car and decided to walk up instead of driving to the top. The consequence is that one has to walk down too. Interesting to see the many pilgrims doing the climb accompanied by some leader blowing a seashell horn. The climb...More

The walk is spectacular yet has three steep areas of steps so be prepared with drinks and go at the right pace for you. The walk takes about one hour observing the scenery although going downhill it is less than 30 minutes. A very popular...More

Haguro-san (Mt. Haguro) is the first part of the Dewa Sanzan pilgrimage. Haguro-san represents birth in the Shugendo birth-death-rebirth cycle. The mountaintop is accessible by car, or bus but I would recommend taking the walking path for the authentic experience. The walking path starts near...More

Rainy morning was probably not the best moment to visit here. Dark photos and not that great inner peace due wet clothing. But still, I can sense the greatness of this area. So beautiful - and remember, active and working holy place. So check out...More

Friends took us to Mt. Haguro for a brief walk. We didn't have a lot of time, but we enjoyed the beauty and peacefulness of the location. It was sunny, but the stone stairway is surrounded by tall cedar trees, so it was a pleasant...More

Enjoyable temple area with a hike down to the pagoda and back up. Good with the autumn colours as a backdrop.

Or you can fly from Haneda Airport and cut your trip down significantly. Flight is 1 hour. But unless you rent a car from the airport, the taxi would be expensive.
